AFL to unveil GWS Giants

THE AFL's 18th team will be unveiled as the Greater Western Sydney Giants tonight.

The colours of the new club's proposed jumper are white, a deep orange and black or charcoal grey.

The AFL has filed two new trademark applications with IP Australia overnight for the names “Greater Western Sydney Giants” and “GWS Giants”.

In addition, the league applied to expand its trademark of the name “Giants” to include additional classes of goods and services that will bring it in to line with all other team name trademarks.

The club filed another three image trademark applications - one is a stylised "G" believed to be the new club's logo.

The other two are jumper designs featuring the "G" insignia on what appears to be an orange and dark grey background.

As reported exclusively in the Herald Sun in August, the league had provisionally applied for trademarks for five different names, Giants and Wolves being the early favourites.

However, the new club made only one official application late yesterday, which was the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

Coach Kevin Sheedy was open about his wish to have a bold, imaginative new club name.

The team name, along with the club’s jumper will be officially announced at a gala function tonight.

It's in Blacktown, Josh.

I believe it's almost on the border of Blacktown and Rooty Hill.

I think the introduction of the Giants is going to bode well for us as a Club. You may think that sounds strange but think about it this way.

The competition for crowds out west is now going to be even more intense. You've got the Giants, the Eels, The Tigers, The Bunnies, The Bulldogs, Sydney FC and the Panthers all competing for the same western Sydney fan base.

With our new development, Leagues Club and Stadium upgrade, we are starting to look like a pretty attractive option for sports fans based on the east coast. What's our competition? it's really only Jubilee oval for the Dragons (and that only get's every second home game) and the Sydney Football Stadium for the Roosters.

I reckon if you are a casual fan of the Bunnies, the Dragons or the Roosters and live between Sydney and Wollongong, Shark Park is looking pretty good. Even those in Sydney's south-west (Bulldogs and Tiger country) might find it easier to take a nice trip to the Shire than battle the traffic, trains and crowds out west.

I know we have plenty of south-west Sydney fans on here, what do you reckon?

it is a very good point you raise iron, but the location of the afl ground itself is out of the way of mayhem.
the closest station would be mt druggit or rooty hill, and there isnt a main road that really leads to it.

but as far as a fan base goes, if they hit the ground running then alot of fans will jump on their band wagon and who knows what could happen.

a wise man you are iron

Sorry mate, I could be wrong but I thought that was only their training facility. I thought that their matches were to be played at ANZ at Homebush?

Playing Stadium

In July 2010 the State Government and the AFL officially signed a funding agreement which will allow the redevelopment of the Sydney Showgrounds. As a community-based club, we applaud the government’s decision to revitalise and reinvigorate an existing facility. Team GWS has always remained committed to developing a home ground for our fans which will create an intimate and enjoyable experience, most importantly at a venue that sits proudly within Greater Western Sydney.

thats from the website, what it means i dont know

Thanks Snowman, Sydney Showgrounds is part of Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush. It's where the Bulldogs used to play for awhile.
It also said on the website that the Blacktown facility was the training ground.

yep, you were correct ironshark.
i was under the impression they would be playing out of blacktown.
but it says they are committed to getting a home ground in the greater west sydney, and there are massive vacancies on the land next to the training ground so my guess would be in 5 years time they will be playing and training there.

No wayy snowy :dougy:

god dammit....
well, atleast you can gloat with me about the premiership!

I'm not exactly sure, the website is very cryptic but the way I read it, the Sydney Showground is their permanent homeground. Homebush is actually considered to be in "Western Sydney"

I can't see the State Government pouring millions in to the Showground if they're only gonna use it for a couple of years?
