The rivalry isn't the same or anywhere near as intense and front of mind since the likes of Gallen, Thurston, Slater, Hodges ect retired.

Maybe it feels this way a bit too due to NSW winning the series these days. I am sure the blues players are loving beating the Qlanders but these young Qlanders don't seem to have the same passion and hatred (of NSW) of the players that came before them.

It's a series that seems to thrive on Qland success but the blues could win 10 straight and it will still get a big audience. they won't ever dispense with it

I actually floated the idea of it being a 3 week series last year or whenever. makes it more of an endurance / fitness test and gets it done and dusted out of they way in under a month so can refocus on the NRL comp

A lot of long term Origin combatants out of both sides, a changing of the guard in terms of players but also a shift away from the Queensland dominance that had all Qlders frothing at both mouths and all the Blues fans desperate to finally put an end to it.
I agree it is kind of a weird spot at the moment.

I remember there was a lot of chat about Queensland fans turning off of SOO before they had their big run. If you look at 90 through 05 it goes
BMBBBMBBMDBMDBBB (Blues/Maroons/Draw) 10 out of 16 won by NSW, only 4/16 won by Qld and more relevant to the 05 sort of time Blues were on a hot streak of three wins and a draw before that.
The Queensland dynasty ensured that SOO was a top product for the next 15 years - now we need some new heros and villains and a new storyline to start to emerge.

Yeah, nowhere near as excited I am for this game. As much as I hated Qld during the streak, it made the prospect of winning so much more important. Especially beating Thurston, Smith, Hodges and Slater... when they all retired the will to win got diminished.

Who f...ing cares if we beat Brenko Lee and AJ Brimson??

You're not wrong but did anybody really care if we beat Billy Slater in 2004? AJ Brimson hasn't had the chance to make Blues fans hate/fear him yet (Brimson is about the same age as Slater was then).

If NSW do their job right we won't have to hate any of these new Queenslanders for a while. This team still has Munster and DCE who can shred anyone if they get a chance. I definitely don't want NSW to lose to them, or to Gagai or Papalli or any of the rest of them.

I guess it goes to show the interest in the series (although being in WA probably played a part) but for some reason I'd assumed the game was going to be on the weekend, only realised yesterday it wasn't. I'll still watch it keenly though, now that I know it is on.

Definitely not the same vibe around SOO this year.

Might have more to do with COVID then the date. I’m legit delighted about post season Origin and I really hope it works, I’m sick of seeing the NRL season interrupted by Origin, this way is better.
