Simon says bring back female board members..... Mr Downy!

Posted by Leon Bott, 4/08/2011 2:32:42 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

I think Leon Bolt needs to be a little more positive about the changes Downy and others want to bring. It's rather sad to see someone who spends too much time criticising others and not much effort doing anything himself! If you are so good why aren't you standing??

Posted by Cass, 4/08/2011 5:41:34 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Firstly, its Bott - not Bolt.
I don't spend a lot of time criticising others, I'm praising the work that the current board has done in getting stuck in to dig the Cronulla Sharks out of the doom and gloom that boards in years gone by left us in.

I do plenty myself, I am currently asking all sharks fans to tread carefully around the nomination of a former sports minister with an interesting past - because I love the club.

You can hop back into bed now.

Changes were required in 2009 when no one wanted to be associated with the club, lest it tarnish their reputation should it close down under all the pressure it was under. Where was Mr Downy then? Now that the changes HAVE been made for the past 2 years and the club again has traction and a future, the political opportunists want to again be associated with the club.

Where are the female candidates??? I might be sceptical, but it looks like the existing female board members were a cosmetic fix when things were rotten. Better not be moving back to an all boys club - that's when the problems start. Have we learned nothing Sharkies?

Ha?

If none want to nominate themselves, we can't really force them.

I think the fact that politicians like Peter Costello drop the place once there is no longer political opportunity for them is EXACTLY why I don't want politicians or political lobbyists within cooee of the Sharks.

Julia would be the go. Even if she had the top job, Damo could still run the show without getting the votes. Maybe she could run on the ticket "there will be no surplus while I am Chairperson", we would be guaranteed a surplus within 6 months.

Spotlight on candidates - St George and Sutherland Shire Leader

Spotlight on candidates
12 Aug, 2011 04:00 AM

Jonathan Docking
1367605.jpg

Former Cronulla first grade star; former board member; working in the gaming industry for many years.

"I can offer the Sharks' club some invaluable expertise, especially to the leagues club on raising their gaming revenue.

"The present board and previous boards have done a great job, under the circumstances, in keeping the club firing.

"The club's gaming revenue slumped from $13m to $9.5m in recent times but there are organisations who have the expertise to help lift it again."

Chris Downy
1367606.jpg

A former NSW sports minister; executive director of Australasian Casino Association.

"I want to help ensure the club is able to support the football team — a team capable of making the top eight on a continual basis.

"The club needs to expand its supporter base, too, to ensure the club has long-term viability ... as well as widespread community support for its important development plans."

Peter Kerr
1367607.jpg

OAM and a shire corporate lawyer; former Australian water polo international; Hall of Fame recipient; Australian Water Polo president.

"I saw the first Sharks' first-grade game at Sutherland Oval (1967). I played league badly at Cronulla High before another sport took me over. But I've always remained a Sharks' fan.

"Having had a great deal of involvement with state and federal government departments, I'm confident I can contribute corporate governance if I'm voted a director of the Sharks.

Peter O'Driscoll
1367608.jpg

A shire IT project manager; Cantorion Male Voice Choir member; worked in the software industry for 30 years.

"I want to reduce the club's dependency on poker machines by maximising revenue from other sources, and I support the new development as a means of providing such revenue.

"I'd work to ensure the football club's limited resources are spent wisely and not squandered; engender a shire-wide community affinity with the club and its teams to ensure the club isn't forced to privatise, and have the constitution changed to provide a fair and equitable voting system for board positions."

Dane Sorensen
1367610.jpg

The former long-serving Cronulla and New Zealand rep prop forward; former Sharks director and builder.

"I believe I have something important to offer, being one of the few board candidates with extensive football playing knowledge.

"There are no grey areas with me about what I'd recommend. I would like to be remembered for not just playing but also being part of the group that saves the Sharks and helps them get back to full financial recovery."

Phillip Tiernan
1367604.jpg

A Caringbah solicitor and business owner; played junior representative football with Cronulla Sharks; played first grade with Illawarra Steelers and Parramatta Eels.

" I believe the success of the club and the football team are intricately related.

"The plans for the commercial development will ultimately deliver a premiership for the Sharks and a successful, financially independent club with fantastic facilities."

Incumbent Sharks directors standing for re-election are:
Jim Barnett, Craig Douglas, Greg Holland, Ricky Sorace, Paul Walker and Keith Ward.

Very disappointing that the Leader chose to put up a half page general news feature on Downy nominating himself but the rest of the candidates are buried in a quarter page combined and abridged "Spotlight" piece.

Fair and equal commentary and exposure?

Some more interesting comments on the "Spotlight on Candidates" article at The Leader.

Jonathan Docking's commitment to the development of junior rugby league in the Shire, to the Sharks and with his knowledge and expertise in the Club industry makes him an obvious and excellent choice.
Others may say they're committed but he has proven it without a shadow of a doubt. He has my vote!

No pollies on the Sharks Board please.

Posted by De La Sharks, 12/08/2011 11:06:17 AM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Sorry, but none of these men are "miracle workers".
Sharks must re-locate or die out!

Posted by Tired, 12/08/2011 2:58:57 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

O'Driscoll is a professional politician. Always very wary of those people on a board that needs to be united going forward.Docking bleeds black white and blue and his gaming experience would be a huge asset to the club.

Personally I think the Irvine ticket is the way to go, they have gotten us away from deaths door and if the development is approved in 60 days we will be safe for a long long time.

Posted by Ryan G, 12/08/2011 4:05:34 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

I would put in chris Downey because he has great contacts and has expeirence, Peter O Driscoll because he has a great plan to save cronulla and great plan and image which cronulla need.

Jonathan Docking because he has a great plan to solve these problems.

I hope they put these people in becuse they have great plans and contacts, expeirence,

Cronulla need to pick the right ones becuse this could either make or break cronulla.

When the Sharks were at rock bottom in 2009, Damian Irvine put his hand up, when few would, to stop a history of mis-management.
I'm almost certain that we would be dead or relocated by now if it wasn't for his, and his boards, effort

s to dig the Sharks out of the hole we were left in - and we are making great progress in this respect with a decision on the development only months away.

Following the stable ticket of Surace, Walker, Douglas, Barnett, Ward, Kerr, Docking and Tiernan in these times is a must.

Posted by Kay, 12/08/2011 10:45:17 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

De La Sharks, absolutely 100% agree with the "no pollies on the Sharks Board" comment..
We need some good footy people with brains like Docking and Tiernan. One knows the Club industry inside out and the other is a sire based commercial lawyer and both are local juniors.

Yes, yes, yes!

Up Up Cronulla!

Roosters rue letting Carney quit grog medicine - Sydney Morning Herald

SHARKS BUTT HEADS
WHAT were the Sharks doing having a bonding session a few weeks before the end of the season? Well that's what took place at the Taren Point pub on Tuesday and I received all kinds of reports of players fighting among themselves and tossing food. None of it was too harmful, but it had the potential to get nasty, especially with players leaving the club. Two were asked to leave the session. There have been denials that two members of the group had words.

IRVINE DUMPS HOLLAND
CRONULLA chairman Damian Irvine has created a huge problem for Sharks fans in the upcoming election by dumping popular community identity and board member Greg Holland from his ticket. The president of the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club and a Sharks board member since 2007, Holland has earned the dislike of Irvine because of the chairman's well-known dismissive attitude towards those not part of his camp. Holland said: ''I don't believe in conflict.

I believe in teamwork. In fact, I support Irvine as president and all other board members as the club goes through this difficult time. The club needs to work with its members and just as importantly, the broader local community, to deliver a first-class development to save the Sharks.'' Despite being dumped by Irvine, Holland said he would not run a rival ticket against Irvine and the existing board. ''The last thing that the Sharks need is a rival ticket.

We need consistency by re-electing the current board. What I'm saying to members is that the Sharks need to continue with the same united board to deliver this fantastic retail and residential development to the community which will ensure the Sharks future. I am running as a director endorsing the current board. The Sharks are about to embark on a very complicated process to be approved by the local community, the Sutherland Council and the NSW Government.''

GAL'S A HUGE LOCKY FAN
IN A week when Darren Lockyer became rugby league's most capped player come more revelations as to how respected he is in the game. In Lockyer's autobiography, which comes out at the end of this month, Cronulla captain Paul Gallen gives an insight to how high the regard is.

''When Ricky Stuart left the Sharks he sat down with me and said he would never use things he learned while he was my coach against me. He said he had too much respect for me and the work we had done together to ever do that and he actually said to me that he was the same way with Locky. He had too much respect for him as a player and as a mate to target him with any crap and he wouldn't have tolerated any of his players doing it, either.

All we spoke about was trying to contain him on the fifth tackle because his kicking game is one of the parts of his game that doesn't get the credit it deserves. It is deflating when you've worked hard to trap a side down their end for five tackles only to see Locky step in and just cream a ball down the park, so you are having to bring it back off your line, anyhow.''

Hahaha...

So in one Weidler article we have:

  • An attack on the current Sharks squad and coaching staff even though by his own admission there was nothing in it.
  • A piece that tries to both demonise Damian Irvine and present Greg Holland as an innocent, popular, team-player being victimised.
  • A story about Gal that gets miraculously turned around to say how great Ricky Stuart and Darren Lockyer are.
Impressive feat!

So just ask yourself folks...

Who do you suppose told Weidler all about the stuff at the Taren Point Hotel?

Why do you think that Weidler would like having Greg Holland on the Board?

Could Weidler get his tongue any further down Ricky Stuart's pants?

"Sharks Butt Heads?"

No Danny, just you being a Butt-head.

Weirdler is the worst "journalist" in Australia at the moment Fitz. Hands down. It's sickening how much he sucks up to the Khoder camp (Mundine, Sonny Bill etc) and Roosters train wrecks. I'm sure he doesn't even realise what a joke he is to the average punter.

I suppose that's how the dribbling gossip columnist does his "job"

Weidler probably believes he is best buddies with these people because they'll actually be bothered to talk to him. Poor thing doesn't realise that he's actually being manipulated to be a mouthpiece of their agendas.

The Herald sports department has seriously taken a nosedive over the last 5 years. They used to have quality, well researched and well written articles. Nowadays they're just poo.

... btw, does anyone reckon the "bonding session" might have just been dinner and drink's for Gal's birthday today?

Happy Birthday Captain Courageous!

Gotta agree Weidler is a total f'wit - just the sight of him on TV makes me want to throw up - the guy is an abject embarrassment to everyone involved in the game - and how Channel 9 continue to trot him out evey so often is a travesty.

Yep Happy Birthday Gal 30 today , whilst I agree about the bonding session , his party was actually about 2 weeks ago

Its the SMH, they dont like us, enough said.

Some say the Telegraph hates us and now you're saying the SMH - does any media outlet like us ??
