AFL to unveil GWS Giants
THE AFL's 18th team will be unveiled as the Greater Western Sydney Giants tonight.
The colours of the new club's proposed jumper are white, a deep orange and black or charcoal grey.
The AFL has filed two new trademark applications with IP Australia overnight for the names “Greater Western Sydney Giants” and “GWS Giants”.
In addition, the league applied to expand its trademark of the name “Giants” to include additional classes of goods and services that will bring it in to line with all other team name trademarks.
The club filed another three image trademark applications - one is a stylised "G" believed to be the new club's logo.
The other two are jumper designs featuring the "G" insignia on what appears to be an orange and dark grey background.
As reported exclusively in the Herald Sun in August, the league had provisionally applied for trademarks for five different names, Giants and Wolves being the early favourites.
However, the new club made only one official application late yesterday, which was the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
Coach Kevin Sheedy was open about his wish to have a bold, imaginative new club name.
The team name, along with the club’s jumper will be officially announced at a gala function tonight.
