With the amount of youth we have lost over the past couple of years and the current Peachey saga I thought I'd throw this out there.
Recent years we have lost a lot of players that people have blown up about Peachey, KOD, Frizzell, Bukuya, Townsend, Viiga, Pickerd this can go on for many a season with different prospects.
Some of these players fade into nothing, others go on to be the one that got away.
Where does the line that seperates the good from the bad come in?
How do you manage these signings to get the talented youth to stay on for less?
Personally I think we could have had some better management of the following players that may have seen us retain them. Peachey, Bukuya, Frizzell and Townsend as for Viiga, KOD and Pickerd there was no way we could really manage these players better as we had much better options.
I'll start with Frizzell. I think there were a lot of games he could have been picked over Taga/Taufua/Tupou. I think he was ripped off in regards to first grade opportunities and didn't see himself getting a go here so he left. I personally would have loved to see him retained and us not sign Heighington.
Peachey has been a tough one to manage due to our star studded backrow and how small he is. I personally think he should have been blooded last year during Origin to get a taste of the backrow in the NRL
This year when we had Lichaa and DeGois out injured I think we should have had Peachey filling in as a utility off the bench.
I think with this added faith shown in Tyrone and his love of the club we could have retained Peachey quite cheap.
Bukuya it's quite simple IMO he should be a certainity to be in the top 17 somewhere. If we didn't have Heighington or Tupou (if we had to have Tupou play Gal at prop) he stays in my eyes.
Townsend if given a decent crack here I have no doubt would have stayed and lets face it the gap between him and Robson is nothing. He should atleast have been given a decent crack with Carney.
While Taga and Taufua have been very handy for our club I think they have played a big role in the losses of Frizzell and Bukuya plus a minor one in Peachey.
One thing I'm very glad of is we re-signed Lichaa. He hasn't been given a chance and seems to be happy to bide his time.
With better management I think we would have the following young players:
Lichaa
Peachey
Frizzell
Townsend
Feki
Sopoaga
Gardner
Moroko
Manumalealii
Coates
The following fairly young players:
Bukuya
Graham
A & D Fifita
Carney
Leutele
Along with the following old heads:
Gallen
Gibbs
M. Gordon
Lewis
DeGois
Plus other players mixed in we would have been able to afford players like Farrell or a good even a Josh Morris plus some of these players would have been upgraded. This would have us well placed for a number of years.
The best clubs are successful at making their young players feel wanted and end up keeping them cheaper than what they could have signed on else where for. This is an area Cronulla is really lacking.
