Under this thinking ....Perhaps we might see a more controlled .. Take charge carney for the sharks... He might take on the role of the 7 in your words so as to allow Kelly to play his more natural game. I would like to see carney play his natural game even if that means having a more mature 7 in robson ... I've got a strange feeling flanno might have robson in there somewhere..

Yep could happen. Was watching his highlights today though and he's a bit of a hog! Not exactly what you want from a controlling half back haha.

I thought the same thing but then I guess if the highlights were mostly him scoring tries then there wouldn't be much footage of him passing to other players,

he bombed a try at the beginning of that footage though when there was a player either side of him and only the fullback to beat, bit greedy ...

the positive I saw was how hungry he is to get to the try line, we need this

Andrew Johns, Trent Barrett and Brad Fittler have all said in recent history that there is little difference between 6/7 these days, hence why they're referred to as the "halves". Good luck to all men vying for a spot next to Todd.

I tend to agree with this. It's much more of a left/right system now-a-days. Look at how successfully Manly ran their attack last year with their 4 man pods(left 4-tight 4- right 4).

I'm not sure if that same game plan would work well with our current roster though.

Interesting point, Carney is primarily a left hand side player and Kelly is primarily a right hand side player. I think it could work. Especially with Graham out there in the backrow also.

I think a year in NSW Cup may benefit Townsend hugely.

Quality post Wrighty. Agree 100%. Except I think we are particularly suited to the 4-4-4 system... especially if we had some decent backs. Carney can play both sides too though if we went with Chad.

By the way... what does 4-4-4 remind you of? RL is becoming more and more structured.

Yeah but what we've been saying when we say one is a half back and one is a 5/8, is that one is an organiser that passes and kicks more, and the other has x-factor and probably takes the line on more.

At least that's what I mean.

With my preferred approach of having a 5/8 on one side and Graham on the other, that is what I mean. Say Carney and 5/8 are either side of the ruck providing a bit more unscripted play, and a half back or tight half or controlling half or whatever stays around the middle and gives a bit of structure. Examples of guys like this are Noddy, Cronk, Pearce etc. Examples of the 5/8's I'm talking about are Benji, Kelly, Carney.

Yes thats true. But a 5/8 doesnt have to be all razzle dazzle either. Foran for example. Lockyer also.

Like Johns, Fittler etc (guys whos opinion on this subject holds credit) say, we basically have 2 half backs now. As team formations have changed. Its not like the 80s plays anymore.

Having said that, you dont want 2 guys who can run the ball, but posses no ability to create something. If thats the case, throw them at lock.

Carney and Graham would be our most balanced pair, having a bit of everything there, Kelly and Carney are a bit alike in that regard. However, they could be devestating, as each side we take the ball, we will be dangerous

I'm a kelly fan, if you ask teams who they would least like to defend against when playing the sharks I'd bet most would say Kelly on one side & Carney on the other, they both have that x factor & can create something out of nothing.

Tis is the million dollar question... I think carney at 7 and Kelly at 6...

Hand carney the keys to the team and just ask him not to drink and drive!

yep my sentiments too with Robson on the bench to cover hooker and half.
Flanagan said Carney would start the season in the 6 jersey.

All this chad talk is driving me up the wall! He is not the player that will consistently win us games. His kicking game is poor and doesnt really offer too much running the ball not in first grade anyway. Give him sometime in nsw cup and see if he improves.

well Kelly a no for fullback :gal:

I voted Chad ... we need an organiser at 7 .. Wade, AK, and Carney not that sort of player ... plus I think Townsend is the better defender too ... not sure on Robson can't really remember what sort of player he is .. but I don't think defensively that Graham or Kelly are up for the move into the forwards - not saying they won't or shouldn't end up there but not yet.

The best news is that we may actually have some depth in positions we struggle in.

Lol his kicking game is poor????? Muppet

Yeah it really is. Other then the titans game he was awful and all he did in the 20m was chip to stapo.

Anyway I say Albert Kelly. Because after Carney he is the best half in the team, and you always put your best players in the team first.

Haha you obviously dont watch the games. How many times did the opposition catch the ball on the full outside their 20m from his boot?? Way too many. We have some awesome leapers on the edges but his kicks never seem to be anywhere in the area! Not ready for first grade im sorry. Would be great to have a local junior come up the ranks and become a great 7. But he is not up to it yet
