Who should partner Carney in the halves?

I rate Kelly above Townsend in all areas bar kicking at this point in time. I think in the future they could well be the perfect halves combo.

if carney doesnt **** up and wants to stick around and is playing well, he should be priority above both

What a ridiculous statement. Albert might miss a couple but if he hits you, you stay hit. He will only get better and I'd suggest his defence is better than Chad's anyway.
Now that's funny mate. If you could point out some examples that require 2 hands to count them, I'll stand corrected.
I base my statement on seeing him dodge defenders rather than put his body on the line (eg of how it should be done, Isaac Gordon). I know halves generally have an above average miss tackle rate etc. For years, they did all sorts of things with Preston C in defense, yet he always had a go & had a steller career. I hope Kelly improves, nothing against the bloke.

At this stage, I just like the style of Chad & think he can have a great career.

I remember numerous times at the end of the season after his broken leg where he whacked a few guys. He probs tackles abit like sandow where he tries to hit hard rather than get the man down (just like wade) Chad is the type of tackler who doesn't hit hard but makes the tackles.

If you want to see a half run from a tackle or any contact at all, look at tim smit's only game this year against souths.

Mmm. Your using Isaac Gordon as an example of how to tackle? I can only remember the one tackle he made against the Roosters. Other than that I don't remember Gordon making a tackle outside of running down players he just missed a tackle on. Kelly made some great front on tackles throughout the year which I'd suggest means he puts his body on the line. He got bumped off a few as well but that doesn't mean he isn't committed. Just sayin.

Obviously I just struggle to imagine him sticking around.

i thought kelly would be a liability in defence, but i was pretty impressed considering his size. he might miss the odd tackle, but he definately doesnt dog it, and they are normally on much bigger guys

People get hung up on stats. Kelly may have plenty of missed tackles but they are almost entirely on kick-chase or marker-chase. In terms of defending in the line, Kelly was better than both Townsend and Graham this year.

As for a kicking game, Townsend was way ahead in that department as a first option kicker, but with Carney in the lineup any of those other three guys would be a good second option kicker.

Disagree with this, Graham is a solid defender, who makes massive contact. Yes he misses a couple put I reckon he is a strength in defense not a weakness.

I think he means positional defence and also 'urgent' defence.

Kelly is probably the best at those things, like perhaps the least likely to concede a line break out of the three halves.

However Graham and Townsend are much more likely to look for defence work. They'll tackle a player and then when they're in market run sideways 10 metres to get another tackle. Not 100% needed but Carney is a bit of a liability in defence so it's nice that the other halves we have can all hold their own to some extent.

I was really happy with AK's defence this year. He seemed to cop a lot more traffic than Wade and seemed to handle it from memory. I do remember Wade slipping off a few that resulted in tries.

As Mark said in an earlier post I'll be pretty happy with whoever gets to partner Carney. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and if Flanno picks the round 1 team after trial form we will most likely have the best man for the job.

go back and watch our games V broncos and count the times wade tackled Thaiday, and tell me which other our halves could do that

Exactly. Defence (and attack) are really broad terms. I'd argue Paul Gallen is the best attacking player in the NRL. Why? Because of the metres he racks up. Attack is about metres. But of course there's more to it than that, and most people wouldn't think of that if they were thinking of what makes a good attacking player.

Similarly with defence you can look at heaps of different things. I'd say Graham is easily our best defensive half over all, however I'd rather Kelly defending in the centres than Wade for example.
