couldnt really care less who partners carney in the halves as long as we win games

Yeah me too.

Although I talk up Townsend and the whole 'natural half back' thing I am mostly in favour of the right person getting the job above all else. As long as the position is filled by the person that earns it I'm happy.

I just think the whole left side / right side thing was what we went with early in 2011 with Graham / Kelly and I don't think that was a successful pairing. Even Graham himself talked about how Townsend helped him by taking pressure off etc. That to me reads like Graham said Townsend is a natural half back and Kelly isn't. I guess it comes down to what does Todd Carney need for him to be the best player he can be. Does he need a half back to lead the team so that he can inject himself when needed? Or does he need to lead the team and need a wing man to help him out from time to time?

The only problem i have with Robson or Townsend being the 7 is they wouldnt be considered in our top 13 players and we would be restricting graham and kelly gametime.
I would hope we have gardner, kelly, carney, graham on for the full 80. De gois as our hooker and Robson on the bench to replace him. Give Townsend a year in nsw cup see if he improves

I know that i want the best possible 13 on the field but just because carney and graham/kelly fit the bill as the best player for the position it doesn't mean it will defs be best for the team. We need what's best for the make up of the team not the best individual players.

thats a good point, and it should be noted i voted for kelly in the pole to partner our marquee signing (small pot shot)

that said, if we wanted to strictly play a "natural" 7 with him, jeff robson gets my vote

haha come on champ. the REAL marquee signing was that we locked down Gal for life. Gallen, the toughest, most intense competitor we've seen in the game for years. The man every other man doesn't want to play against.

Too slow! That is the same article Hrvatska provided a link for just a couple of posts up!

Well he is better than all the other half backs we have. In fact I can't think of another 7 we have at the club.

Not really late if i posted it last year right? haha

I really don't see Graham being able to play 80 minutes of back row. Nor should he when we have such a wealth of talent in the area.

I agree.

Gallen 80
Jez 50

Then you divide 110 minutes up between Tupou and Graham. Graham gives ball playing, Tupou gives ball running / impact.

I wouldn't even give Gal the 80 every week. 70-75 preferably. Start looking after him a bit but make sure Smith is on while Gal's off.

And then give Smith 40-50 like he was playing at St George. And I would rest him some weeks as well.

Bukuya is devastatingly unlucky if he doesn't make the 17 next year.

To be honest, while I'm a huge fan of Graham and I think he will be a very good lock for us, does he have the same runs on the board in the back row as Gal, Smith, Tupou, Bukuya and even Taga do?

Its a conundrum. But a good one.

Bingo.

Get Graham to play 25-30 minutes stints and have someone like Taga/Toops sub him off for some impact.

I agree AB.

And my mindset before getting Carney is different now and I have to think about things differently. For example before Careny we had some good halves options but none set the world on fire, so I wanted to have Townsend/Kelly/Graham all on the field to sort of make up for it. But with a player like Carney maybe we don't need that.

But Graham really deserves to play. It's a weird situation.

Do you reckon Gallen would be happy ever being on the bench? I think I'd rather him play 80 but allow others to share his work load more. If he could lower his work rate and focus on quality over quantity and let the pigs do more work I think we look after him while not requiring him to warm the bench.

I hope waking up a couple of times after only play 70mins might convince him that its a good idea.

I don't like the lack of line runners in most people's teams. Mitch Aubusson's hole-running did as much for Carney's game in 2010 as Carney did for the Roosters. FPN was the same. Good ballplayers need good runners- or at least runners who can run the right lines to create space.

Our best line runner is Friz, then probably Taga and Bukuya. Tupou and Graham are different in that they like to footwork their way through the line and ballplay. Gal could maybe do a job for us but his damn workload means he overcalls the ball and makes a lot of bad decisions because of fatigue.

Bukuya also gives us some lateral/footspeed speed in defence that the others don't. Don't be surprised to see him named in the 17 over a more 'fancied' player come round 1 for those reasons.

EDIT: Its a reason we need to extend Graham before Round 1... so we're not beholden to playing him even if he isn't in the best 17. With Smith and probably Tupou moving on over the next couple of years there will be spots there in the back row- but maybe not this year.

as others have already stated Gal doesnt need to paly 80mins every week & more importantly doesn't have to be a a focal part of our attack in 2012 either.

Its hard enough getting Gallen to come off as it is, do you think they can do it every game, they'll have to fire a sleeping dart at him and drag him off.

i like the combo of kelly & carney but i would have them the
way around. as carney used to play half back when he was at the
raiders. plus i think kelly plays better at 5/8, i would also move graham
to the back row & along with de gois will provide plenty of attacking
options. which hopefully will lead to us scoring lots of points & winning
a lot more games.
