Gotta say as a Qlder that I was stoked when Maloney got picked ahead of Carney. Firstly because Carney is better, and secondly so Carney wouldn't get injured in the finals again ... but alas ... the finals halves curse strikes again.

Why cant we have origin at the end of the season or pre-season , Preferably the end to avoid injuries that affect the club, I understand the train of thought regarding players and the prestige of playing rep, lets face it to have 3 games , players giving it all , no club games to worry about and the ability to concentrate on building on some player combination s at origin level say over 3 weeks and have support games ie under 20s , nsw Cup vs QLD Cup ,looks pretty marketable to me.
Wait for the upcoming World Cup TV ratings, and that will tell you why an off-season Origin won't work.

pre season wouldn't work because you are going off the passed season...players agee, regress, and could have put on a few kg's with xmas dinner.

They will never move it from mid-season, so you need to find solutions around it.
Mine would be to keep it mid-week, and keep in bunched with the byes, but on the weekend following Origin, have a Super League-ish 'Magic Weekend' ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Weekend ).
Eg- We have Origin in Sydney on a Wednesday night, that following weekend we have the 4 games on a Saturday/Sunday at Suncorp. Next Origin we have a game at Suncorp, then have our dirty weekend in Sydney.
It won't help player burnout, but it will help with rubbish bye weekends where thanks to Ch. 9 there is only one (1) FTA game on TV for the WHOLE WEEKEND. I swear those weekends the AFL viewship spikes.
