With the Mankad law instead of making it they get dismissed, why not make it they lose 5 runs or something like that?

Would be enough to incentivise bowlers to run them out for it without feeling guilty and batters to stop doing it.

The video ref is deducting a run when the batter runs short so I can't see any reason why they can't do it for backing up too far as well.

Couldn't work for club cricket though, so that presents the issue of a lack of consistency I guess.

Nah, be more careful and stay in the crease, like a baseballer has to be careful when taking a lead to steal second base. I see no difference between the two scenarios. Both should be out.

My young fellow took 5 wickets in his Under 14Cs game yesterday and that included a hat trick! Never got one in all my years of playing but I’m very happy for my boy! 5/10 off 4.2 overs.
