The Sharks are sending three squads to the play the Canberra Raiders on Saturday.

The Cronulla Sharks Matthew's Cup, SG Ball and a combination Toyota Cup / NSW Cup / NRL to Seiffert Oval for what promises to by three good games for footy as we get closer to the 2009 season kick off on the 14 th of Febuary.

Both clubs will be using these games to help them pick their final squads for 2009, a hard jobs for anyone. Good luck to both clubs.

Raiders won the trial 32 - 12

Raiders won the trial 32 - 12

1st 25 mins. Sharks 8 Raiders 0
2nd 25 mins. Raiders 20 Sharks 12
3rd 25 mins. Raiders 32 Sharks 12

It's worth pointing out that most of the squad was replaced in the third 25 mins by mainly kids.

Our best in my opinion -

1. Number 11, second rower Atelea Vea, works hard all game, took the ball forward more than most and defended with vigor.

2. Number 6, 5/8 Shane Pumipi, busy all game looked very creative but needs to work on defence.

3. Number 8, Prop Forward John Mannah, dominated early and scored the 1st try of the match - then backed it up and saved a try down the other end 5 mins later.

Worth a mention -

Number 15, Ryan Verlinden Prop Forward, Probably the biggest player on the field, looked a shade heavier than Leroyd-lars. Ryan looks the goods but was a bit lazy (to be expected in 1st trial) each time he ran it took a lot to put him down.

Number 13, Lock forward Aiden Howard, like my MoM Vea is a hard worker.

Number 1, Fullback Ben Orcher, was a bit disapointing for me, particualy in defence - but again it's the first game of the year so I'm sure he'll get better.

Be interested to hear from anyone else at the trial???

THE NRL trials kicked off last night with two referees and Canberra overcoming an early deficit to defeat the Cronulla Sharks at Seiffert Oval.

The first test of the two-referee system went well in a match which featured predominantly Toyota Cup players. Both Jarrad Maxwell and Gavin Badger combined well in monitoring the play the ball and 10m rule.

"It's early days, but the pleasing thing from the trial was the two referees weren't noticed,'' Canberra coach David Furner said. "The speed of the game was good and ruck was cleared pretty quickly, which is what we all want.''

The only lowlight for the Raiders was prop forward Cy Lasscock who was stretched off in the first quarter after suffering a dislocated knee. Lasscock left the ground on crutches and will have scans on Tuesday.

The Sharks started well and led 8-0 at the first break thanks to tries to prop John Mannah and hooker Tony Caine.

However, the Raiders hit back with five unanswered tries in the second of three 25-minute periods.

Halfback Josh McCrone crossed twice, along with prop forward Nick Skinner and centres Brad Cross and James Stuart.

The Raiders also finished the stronger in the final quarter and Furner said he was pleased with his side's first-up performance.

"I thought after a scrappy first quarter we started to play some good football and I was especially pleased with how we finished the game,'' Furner said.

The Sharks' best was hooker Tony Caine who played strongly on his return to rugby league following a knee injury.

Fulltime

CANBERRA 32 (J McCrone 2, J Stuart 2, A Edwards, Brad Cross, D Vidot, N Skinner tries) CRONULLA 12 (J Mannah, T Caine, P Latu tries).

Canberra 32 Cronulla 12

RICKY STUART picked up a clipboard for the first time since that blow-up. It was also the first outing for David Furner as an NRL coach, although there was not much NRL talent at his disposal at Seiffert Oval last night.

Canberra coach Furner and Cronulla counterpart Stuart used the first unofficial trial for 2009 to cast their eyes over a bunch of youngsters and journeymen hoping to impress before the season proper kicks off in about seven weeks.

It's fair to say that Greg Bird wasn't the only superstar missing from the Sharks line-up. There was no sign of the recruits.

No Trent Barrett. No Anthony Tupou. No Reni Maitua. The trio was spared a hit-out in Canberra's sweltering heat, a description seldom used in describing rugby league conditions in the nation's capital.

Of the 17 men on the Sharks team list only one name was familiar. Tony Caine. Remember Tony Caine? The former Sharks and Dragons hooker destined for superstardom.

That was until the day Steve Price charged down one of his kicks and left his leg hanging at right angles.

Not long afterwards he retired, a promising career seemingly cut short until he resurfaced last night to score the Sharks' second try.

The first was scored by John Mannah, who appears to be as good a prospect as his brother, Parramatta NYC captain Tim.

The Raiders fielded 25 men for the contest. Sadly, they only finished with 24.

Cy Lasscock lasted just 10 minutes, the first casualty of the new year.

The big prop fell awkwardly, dislocated his knee and was carried from the field where it was popped back into place. He will have scans tomorrow.

To say the proceedings were informal is an understatement. Tries weren't converted. A Canberra forward relieved himself on the side of the paddock just before kick-off. There were three orange breaks. And while no one will remember the final scoreline (Canberra prevailed 32-12), a couple of performances were memorable.

Furner enjoyed the experience.

"It signals the comp is just around the corner," he said. "I was pretty excited. I know some of the players were looking forward to the game and the coaches were, too."

Asked about getting one up on his old teammate Stuart, he said, "It is only a trial.

"It would be nice to be in a situation to take a proper two points."

The Raiders scored four tries in an eight-minute burst, two by prodigal son Josh McCrone. The young half returned to the Raiders after a stint at Penrith and appears worthy of future opportunities.

Raiders prop Daniel Joyce attempted to shoulder charge everything in sight, with mixed success. The kid is a monster.

And comeback kid Caine was probably the best on ground.

There was some good talent on show and Furner and Stuart saw some of the stars of tomorrow.

Raiders too strong for Sharks in first trial of '09
BY KYLE MACKEY-LAWS

AT FIRST glance, it could have been more than 20 years ago and the middle of winter.

With the Seiffert Oval grandstand packed to the rafters, the evening sun shining down on the turf and the distinct lime green jersey of the early 1980s on display, the mind instinctively wandered back to the early days of the Raiders, when the club affectionately called Seiffert home.

Instead, it was the first trial match of 2009 and the Sharks and Raiders were fielding largely unknown sides.

Played in three 25-minute blocks, Cronulla enjoyed the early run of play.

However, it was a Raiders player who was the centre of the action early in the match, with Queanbeyan local Cy Lasscock dislocating a knee cap. The front-rower will have scans on the knee tomorrow.

Cronulla opened the scoring, with prop John Mannah crashing over after 10 minutes to give his side a 4-0 lead, with no conversions being kicked during the trial. When hooker Tony Caine crossed with seconds left in the first third, Cronulla had an 8-0 lead at the first break.

But the Raiders hit back early in the second third, with young forward Nick Skinner opening the scoring for Canberra in the 32nd minute.

And when boom halfback Josh McCrone playing his first match in lime green for two years scored to tie up the scores two minutes later, the Raiders were on a roll.

With further tries to McCrone, Brad Cross, James Stuart, Jarrad Croker, Daniel Vidot and Andrew Edwards, the Raiders ran away with a comfortable 32-12 victory.

The Sharks managed just one try after the first third, with Phil Latu crossing at the end of the second period.

Raiders coach David Furner, in charge of his first match as head coach, said he was impressed with his team's performance.

''We got what we wanted out of it, we had some young kids playing against some more physical opposition, we had some guys from South Logan, and we had some first graders there who needed some game time.

''I thought in the second stanza some of the young kids Travis Waddell, Andrew Edwards it was a good opportunity and that was pleasing for the coaches.''

AT A GLANCE

Canberra Raiders have defeated the Cronulla Sharks 32-12 in the opening NRL trial at Queanbeyan 's Seiffert Oval last night.

The match was played in three 25-minute blocks and featured two referees, Jarrad Maxwell and Gavin Badger combining well with the new play-the-ball and 10m rule.

The Sharks got away first in the opening stanza with prop John Mannah crashing over after 10 minutes to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

Comeback hooker Tony Caine crossed in the 24th minute to give the Sharks an 8-0 lead.

But the Raiders struck back after the first break, with rookie forward Nick Skinner scoring in the 32nd minute.

Raiders halfback Josh McCrone then crossed two minutes later to make it 8-all.

Cronulla's Phil Latu scored just before the next break. But the Raiders raced away in the final third with tries to McCrone, Brad Cross, James Stuart, Jarrad Croker, Daniel Vidot and Andrew Edwards.

It was the first match for new Canberra head coach David Furner.

The Raiders win came at a cost with Queanbeyan front rower Cy Lasscock dislocating a knee cap in the opening section. He was scheduled to have scans today.

Unfortunatly I didnt think he looked as good as they are making out? Either way though hope he goes well in 09.

I wanna see this Verlinden bloke play, is he bigger than Selmes?

I doubt he's as big as Selmes 196cm 118kg, but he's big alright and probably quicker and hits the line harder. I'm sure Stuart will have him working hard on his defence as I think that may be a weakness in his game?

Hey fancyman, I think there's hope for a lot of our juniors, particulary the backrowers. Nathan Stapelton went ok but nothing flash, plus they moved him to the wing and played a guy called Phil Latu in the centres who looked like a younger version of Wendell Sailor to me. I was particularly looking forward to watching young Jason McGrady play but I either missed him or he didnt get a run (players were coming off and on all the time) but I did see him on the sideline and he looked like he really needs to beef up before he could think about 1st grade.

I have heard good things about Verlinden, and it does not surprise me he was a little laxy though, as I have seen him doing extras at the gym, so he may be a little out of conditioning.

I also heard mid last year good things about Vea, Apparently Thompson was telling Ricky about him late last year, Ricky watched him play once and dragged him to train with the top squad.

I have also seen that Aiden bloke train a fair bit, he does heaps of extras, trains the house down and is very helpful and enthusiastic at training, so I am glad he plays ok, because all reports are they like him down their because of this attitude.

Most of all good to hear Caine went well though, I am happy for him more then anything.

Have actually heard since that is was only the first 25 mins we put a decent side on, the remaining 2 x 25 mins we had mostly 20's on, and the Raiders had a fair few NRL players playing in those 25 mins, and we still hold our own. Not bad, either our juniors are not bad, OR Raiders are dreadful.

Britt tastes the big league
30/01/2009 4:00:00 AM

Rising rugby league prop forward Matt Britt was given a taste of NRL style football during the Canberra Raiders 32-12 trial win over the Sharks at Seiffert Oval on Saturday night.

Britt, who was on the field for most of the contest, teamed up with 13 fellow under 20s and seven regular first graders in steamy conditions.

For the 107kg prop, Saturday night’s hit-out was a confidence booster after an off-season spent overcoming niggling injuries.

“I’m a lot fitter than I thought I was,” Britt told the Tribune. “I got plenty of game time… probably played about 40 minutes out of 70.

“It was a pretty tight contest for the first two quarters, but we got over the top of them in the second half.”

Britt found the contest vastly different to that of a regular under 20s match. “It wasn’t quite as fast as the Toyota Cup because they fielded a heap of Jim Beam Cup [Sydney First Grade] players. It was more physical than under 20s though.”

The former Yass Magpie junior heads off on a training this weekend, before vying for selection in the Raiders under 20s to tackle the Tigers in a trial the following weekend.
