Trial a chance to gauge our depth: Furner
BY DAVID JEAN
21/01/2009 1:00:00 AM

New Canberra Raiders coach David Furner will use his first game in charge of the club to test the depth of his playing ranks.

Furner named an inexperienced line-up yesterday to take on Cronulla in a trial game at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

Only seven players in the 24-man squad have NRL experience, while seven players will travel from the Raiders' Queensland Cup side Souths Logan on Friday to participate in the unofficial trial, which will be held over three 25-minute periods.

Raiders recruits Stuart Flanagan and Sam Huihaha will feature in the game, alongside experienced prop Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and promising NRL-capped youngsters Justin Carney and Joel Thompson.

Fringe outside backs Brett Kelly and Brad Cross will also get an opportunity to impress Furner in the first serious hit-out of the season.

Furner has also named 14 players who participated in the Raiders' Toyota Cup premiership last year.

He said he was looking forward to seeing how last year's under-20s crop handled the physical pressure of playing against the Sharks.

''It's obviously against a more physical opposition than the national under-20s,'' Furner said.

''It gives us an idea whether or not they can handle that physicality against a little bit tougher opposition.

''This trial will be used to have a look at some of the emerging players that haven't yet played first grade, as well as some guys that need a bit of time on the field.''

Former Wests Tigers hooker Flanagan will use the game to get some extra miles in his legs after missing the end of last season through injury.

The 22-year-old is hoping to secure the Raiders' No9 jersey this season after spending the past three years as Tigers star Robbie Farah's understudy.

''It's my first game with pretty much any of these boys so it will be good to get out there and see what the young fellas have got,'' Flanagan said.

''I didn't play towards the end of last year so coming up to this weekend I'm looking forward to it and it should be a bit of match fitness for me.

''[Tom Learoyd-Lahrs] is playing this weekend as well so it will be good to learn his style of playing a bit and get to know him a bit better around the park.''

Two NRL referees will control the game, giving Furner another opportunity to see how the new system works following last week's opposed session.

''Last week it was interesting to see that the two referees didn't seem to be a big factor,'' he said.

''They didn't get in the way. We had some good feedback [from the players] after the opposed session and the two referees gave us some good feedback.''

SATURDAY

NRL trial: Canberra Raiders v Cronulla Sharks at Seiffert Oval, 6pm; Harold Matthews trial: Raiders v Sharks at 2pm; SG Ball trial: Raiders v Sharks at 4pm. Gates open at 1.30pm.

Raiders NRL squad to play Sharks: Lewis Balcombe, Matt Britt, Michael Brophy, Justin Carney, Brad Cross, Josh Dugan, Andrew Edwards, Stuart Flanagan, Sam Huihaha, Daniel Joyce, Brett Kelly, Jarrad Kennedy, Cy Lasscock, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Drury Low, Josh McCrone, Michael Picker, Zac Russ, Nick Skinner, Matt Smith, James Stuart, Joel Thompson, Daniel Vidot, Travis Waddell.

Does anyone know if the Sharks have released a squad yet? The Sharks webpage is way behind the times as usual.

I had a look at some of the other clubs web pages and some are pretty good. I particularly liked the Titans format. You should have a look? unless other clubs info makes you sick of course. ha ha ha

I understand, but I get bored in the off season. There's only so many times I can watch us smash the saints over and over again on tape.

We're pretty safe from that here. Rather than opposition fans trying to f-ck a collective group of Sharks fans over, we just divide ourselves in the off season and attack each other, preventing the need for any outside interference. Sort of like if Palestine just beat up on each other Israel would have to occupy themselves with other things.

THE Canberra Raiders return to Seiffert Oval tomorrow afternoon to play their first trial of the 2009 season against the Cronulla Sharks.

New coach David Furner has named a largely inexperienced squad for the clash, with Queanbeyan juniors Cy Lasscock and Andrew Edwards expected to take the field.

Towering forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs will line up tomorrow alongside last season's first grade debutants Justin Carney and Joel Thompson while Josh McCrone will wear the lime green for the first time since rejoining Canberra from Penrith.

New signings Stuart Flanagan and Sam Huihahau will also take the field for the Raiders.

After a frustrating tenure at the Wests Tigers as the number two hooker behind Robbie Farah, Flanagan has moved to Canberra to re-establish himself in first grade and said tomorrow's trial would be a good chance to make an impression at the Raiders.

``It's my first game with pretty much any of these boys so it will be good to get out there and see what the young guys have got,'' Flanagan said.

Tomorrow's game will be officiated by two referees as part of the NRL's new system, which will be implemented in every NRL match this season.

Furner said he hoped tomorrow's trial would give his team a platform for getting used to the refereeing changes as well as give his young squad a chance to shine. ``This trial will be used to have a look at some of the emerging players that haven't yet played first grade, as well as some guys that need a bit of time on the field,'' he said.

``The other important factor will be that we've secured two referees so it gives us an understanding of how two referees control a game.'' Prior to the main game, the Raiders' under 16s Harold Matthew and under 18s SG Ball teams will also face the Sharks.

Sharks youngsters to get a run

The Cronulla Sharks have named an inexperienced squad to play the Canberra Raiders tomorrow night at Seiffert Oval.

Only hooker Terrence Seu Seu has NRL experience, with the rest of the squad made up of premier league and under-20s players.

The match, to be played in 25 minute thirds, will be the first trial of the year, with both clubs expected to field young players in what is expected to be warm conditions.

In contrast to the Raiders' naming seven players with NRL experience, Seu Seu will be the only Shark who played top-flight football last season.

He played 15 matches for the Sharks in 2008 and represented Samoa at the rugby league World Cup last year.

But Raiders utility Brett Kelly isn't worried about who he lines up against tomorrow night.

''I couldn't care less who we play, as long as we play well that's the main thing,'' Kelly said.

''It really doesn't matter who is playing we could be playing the Australian side and it wouldn't matter it's still just a trial.''

Kelly will be out to impress against the Sharks, with the former Cronulla player in a tight battle with Adrian Purtell, Phil Graham, Justin Carney and Joel Monaghan for a position in the outside backs.

But Kelly said the trial would give him an opportunity to show the Raiders coaching panel what he has to offer.

''There are a few spots in the side where a lot of blokes are going for the same position.

''I just have to play well we're playing three thirds and I'll play one third in the centres and one third in the back row I used to play there, it's only since I came to Canberra that I've been on the wing.''

TOMORROW

Raiders v Sharks at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan at 6pm.

Yass' Matt Britt has been selected to play for the Raiders against the Sharks this Saturday.

Yass rugby league product Matt Britt has been named in the Canberra Raiders’ squad for this weekend’s trial match with the Sharks.

Britt was one of 14 Toyota Cup players named in the side and will be keen to impress new head coach David Furner when given his opportunity at Seiffert Oval on Saturday night.

The 107kg prop is still smarting after missing the Raiders’ thrilling Toyota Cup grand final win over the Broncos with a lower back injury.

However, after a six-week off-season and two month pre-season training program, Britt is adamant he’s fit and ready to fire. “The back has been great during training, I’ve hardly had any trouble at all,” he told the Tribune. “This weekend’s a pretty good chance for me, so hopefully I can get a bit of game time and make the most of it.”

Furner will use his first game in charge of the Green Machine to test the depth of the club’s playing ranks and cast an eye over many of the Raiders’ under 20s squad.

“It's obviously against a more physical opposition than the national under 20s,”Furner said. “It gives us an idea whether or not they can handle that physicality against a little bit tougher opposition.

“This trial will be used to have a look at some of the emerging players that haven't yet played first grade, as well as some guys that need a bit of time on the field.”

Seiffert Oval will host an action packed Saturday afternoon of football this weekend. Gates open at 1.30pm, with the Raiders’ Harold Matthews (under 16s) squad eye-balling the Sharks at 2pm, before Canberra’s SG Ball (under 18s) outfit take to the field at 4pm and first grade at 6pm.

READY TO ROCK

TWO of the Riverina’s brightest rugby league products will take an important step on the pathway to playing in the NRL this season.

Temora’s Josh McCrone and Wagga’s Nick Skinner have both been named in Canberra Raiders’ NRL squad for the opening trial of the season tomorrow night.

In a major boost to the pair’s chances of making their NRL debuts this year, McCrone and Skinner will both play for Canberra against Cronulla at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan.

Speaking from Canberra yesterday, McCrone yesterday said he was looking forward to the opportunity to impress the Raiders coaching staff against Cronulla.

“It will be a great chance for me,” McCrone told The Daily Advertiser.

“They have named a lot of the new and young blokes for this match so it will be a very good chance for all of us playing to show what we have got.

“I will be out there looking to do my best and gain some match fitness as well.”

McCrone, a talented halfback, rejoined Canberra at the end of last season after an unsuccessful stint with NRL rival Penrith.

Skinner, a big prop, was an integral member of Canberra’s premiership-winning Toyota Cup under 20 team and has been retained by the Raiders.

McCrone yesterday revealed his dream of making his NRL debut this season and said he was in with a solid chance of playing in the top grade for Canberra.

“I will just take it trial by trial and week by week,” McCrone said.

“But ever since I started playing

footy when I was four years old I have always aspired to play at the highest possible level.

“We don’t have that many halves options at the moment so I should be in with

a pretty good chance.

“Hopefully I can (play NRL) this year.”

McCrone said he was enjoying being back in Canberra and was determined to “make amends” after playing last season with Penrith’s feeder-club Windsor in the NSW Cup.

“I played NSW Cup all last year and I didn’t have a great year,” McCrone said.

“I am turning over a new leaf this year.

“I want to gain a bit more muscle and work on my defence.

“I have slipped straight back into everything here (Canberra).”
