I know it's early days but dates are already emerging for next year's pre-season trails.

Cronulla is pencilled in to play Canberra on January 24 at Seiffert Oval. Anyone know of any other trial dates?

Come on capital shark why would they try and use Canberra stadium for a trail with fringe players only? A big waste of money. You must love Kate Carnell haha. Seffiet is definitely the more viable option for the Raiders although it is in NSW, but hey its where they first played and would be better suited to the smaller crowd figures. I would have rathered West Belconnens field in Kippax, but hey Im jus glad that the Sharks are playing here.

Also they would not be able to use Canberra stadium because that is in the middle of the rugby union season

I understand all that, I was just thinking of what would make it easier for me. I never even thought of Westies. That'd be even better. Could inside and watch it. In fact thats where the Raiders should play. Either that or put a lid on Bruce and heat the f-cking thing. I think my testicles are still decending from that cold, cold Monday night game this year.

And f-ck the Brumbies. Gregan/Larkham stand, give me a break. I wouldn't grace the jumping castle with their names, let alone a whole grand stand.

I think you will find that Canberra trial is only for Matthews Cup & SG Ball, I am not sure about the other junior grades ( PL or NYC) but definately not the NRL sides.

From what I have read elsewhere I believe these are the trials set thus far for NRL side.

February 14th Vs Nth Qld in Mackay

February 21st Vs Titans in Darwin

February 28th Vs Newcastle in Newcastle.

Someone tell me if I have got this wrong, as at this stage it looks like Newcastle is my only option to watch them trial realistically, given I won't be travelling to Darwin or Mackay.

Raiders' two-ref hit-out
BY DAVID JEAN

<EDITED>Full article can be found here.

The Raiders will play a trial game against Cronulla at Seiffert next Saturday, with the NRL set to assign two referees following a request from club officials.

Both teams will mostly field fringe players rather than NRL regulars.

With less than five weeks to go until the Raiders' first full-blooded trial game against Brisbane, Tongue said competition remained hot for positions for round one.

The Raiders have been doing two opposed sessions a week, something Tongue said was crucial to getting the likes of recruits David Shillington, Stuart Flanagan and Bronson Harrison used to the Raiders' playing style.

''It's important for them to get a feel for the style of play that [coach David Furner] is bringing and what we built last year. We need to take up from last year and add what the new coaching staff have given us.''

Furner will name a squad for the Cronulla trial on Tuesday.

RAIDERS TRIALS

January24 v Cronulla at Seiffert Oval; February21 v Brisbane Broncos at Redcliffe; February28 v Bulldogs at Meakin Park.

Get over it mate

and that only like 30 min drive boo hoo

I dunno how to get there. Not so good with directions.

The tomtom I ordered arrived in the mail last week. Whereis.com doesn't recognize "me letter box" as a valid destination, so I'll just have to read your match report. Be sure to include a piece on the game of Eye Spy that goes down on the drive. If it begins with 'K', hit the brakes, its probably a roo, otherwise it'll begin with 'F', I'd guess "f-ck all" ...still.

Learoyd-Lahrs desperate to impress

BY DAVID JEAN
RUGBY LEAGUE
20/01/2009 1:00:00 AM

Canberra Raiders prop Tom Learoyd-Lahrs can't remember ever playing a rugby league game in January.

Usually the luckless 23-year-old is in the gym on a rowing machine or a grinder at this time of year, trying to recover from his latest injury.

So it's a refreshing feeling for Learoyd-Lahrs to know he's fit and raring to go for Saturday's trial against Cronulla at Seiffert Oval.

Learoyd-Lahrs is the only fully-fledged member of the Raiders' top squad that coach David Furner will name today to play Cronulla, joining the likes of fringe players Brett Kelly, Brad Cross and Josh Dugan in the inexperienced line-up.

It will be his only pre-season game because of a three-match suspension carrying over from last year, that has rubbed him out of the Raiders' two official trials and their round-one clash with the Wests Tigers.

With that suspension in mind Learoyd-Lahrs has issued an ominous warning to the Cronulla pack, saying he won't be easing himself back into the swing of things on Saturday, instead preferring to approach the game with an all-or-nothing attitude.

''I've got to go flat stick,'' Learoyd-Lahrs said. ''There's a lot of front-rowers here that are really good players, so I don't think I can afford to go half-hearted.

''Hopefully I'll punch out a lot of minutes this weekend. There's a lot of forwards all vying for only a few spots. This is my only game so I've got to go in with that in mind.

''I've got to try to make a statement early and hopefully I leave a good impression.''

The NRL judiciary handed Learoyd-Lahrs a seven-game suspension for a spear tackle last year, costing him a chance to play a part in the Raiders' finals campaign.

The suspension capped off another forgettable year for the big-hitting prop, who has struggled with injuries over the past three years.

While still disappointed at the length of his suspension, Learoyd-Lahrs said he was feeling fitter and fresher than he had for several seasons.

''It was long and maybe it was a bit excessive,'' he said of the suspension.

''But at the end of the day I suppose I did the wrong thing. It was a bad tackle so you've just got to cop it on the chin.

''I'll miss a couple of trial games and one game at the start of the year, it's not going to bite into my season too much. I'm a bit fresher this time of year than I was last year.

''So far so good, if I can get through the week and get a game of football in it will be the best pre-season I've had for a long time.''

The Raiders' under-16s and under-18s will also play trials against Cronulla at Seiffert on Saturday.

SATURDAY

Trial match: Canberra Raiders v Cronulla at Seiffert Oval, 6pm.

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will use their opening trial of 2009 to test the depth of their playing roster, when they take on the Cronulla Sharks at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan on Saturday evening.

Raiders Coach David Furner has named a relatively inexperienced squad for the Green Machine's opening hit out, opting to save his more experienced campaigners for the Raiders official NRL trials in late February.

There are however some familiar faces that have been named in the squad for Saturday, with Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Justin Carney and Joel Thompson all taking part, while new recruits Stuart Flanagan, Sam Huihahau and Josh McCrone will also get their chance to impress.

With two games left on his seven week suspension the match will give Learoyd-Lahrs a much needed run before round one, as the remaining two trials will round out his suspension.

After naming his squad today Furner said it was not only important to give all of his young troops a chance to make an impact, it was also a chance to trial the new two referee system.

"This trial will be used to have a look at some of the emerging players that haven't yet played first grade, as well as some guys that need a bit of time on the field," Furner said. "The other important factor will be that we've secured two referees so it gives us an understanding of how two referees control a game."

New recruit Stuart Flanagan said he's looking forward to his first chance at wearing the green jersey, and was out to make an impression on his new team mates and coaching staff.

"Its my first game with pretty much any of these boys so it will be good to get out there and see what the young guys have got," Flanagan said.

The match will be three periods of 25 minutes.

Gates open at Seiffert Oval at 1.30pm on the day, with the Raiders Harold Matthew's (under16's) kick starting the day with a trial against the Sharks at 2.00pm.

Entrance to Seiffert Oval will be via the High St entrance, and spectators are reminded that this will be an alcohol free venue. No alcohol will be sold or permitted at the ground.

There will be a canteen operating with hot food and non-alcoholic beverages.

1.30pm Gates Open
2.00pm Harold Matthew's trial Raiders v Sharks
4.00pm SG Ball trial Raiders v Sharks
6.00pm NRL/Toyota Cup trial Raiders v Sharks
