Sharks hopeful about Caine

CRONULLA NSW Cup coach Alex Melville says he has every confidence Tony Caine can put his injury nightmares behind him after making a return to the NRL.

Caine, who started his career at the Sharks, has signed on as a member of the club's NSW Cup squad, less than a year after being forced to walk away from St George Illawarra due to a long-standing knee injury.

The 22-year-old hooker, who was one of the Sharks' most promising juniors, shattered his knee ligaments on his NRL debut in 2006 after he was charged down by New Zealand Warriors prop Steve Price when attempting a kick.

Although he went on to play nine NRL games for the Dragons, Caine was released last March after experiencing further problems with his knee.

But after a spell playing grade football in Sydney with Coogee Dolphins, Caine is trying his luck again with the Sharks and Melville says he has every chance of making it back to the top flight.

"He was in the Dragons' top 25 last year but his knee wasn't right and he wasn't enjoying it,'' said Melville. "He came to us in October, said he wanted to give it one last crack so we brought him into the squad and he has been a tremendous asset with what we want to achieve with our NSW Cup squad and hopefully he can go beyond that.

"Tony Caine is a first-grade quality player and I have no reservations about his ability to step it up, it is just a case of making sure everything is right. We have got a couple of kids looking for a second chance and Cronulla is the right place for them to do that.''

Melville, who will field six players with NRL experience, including Caine, in his side's trial match with Newtown Jets at Henson Park on Saturday said he also has high hopes for young front-rower Johnny Mannah.

"Johnny has come in from Parramatta and we feel he can push on to the first grade because he is a player with great talent.''
