Dragons sign promising Sharks

ST George-Illawarra has snared two promising players from is most bitter NRL rivals, signing Sharks duo Beau Scott and Tony Caine.

Centre Scott, who played for Illawarra and the Dragons in the lower grades before joining the Sharks in 2005, signed a three-year deal, while utility Caine, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in his NRL debut, has linked with the Dragons for two seasons.

Dragons coach Nathan Brown likened Scott, 22, to club stalwart Shaun Timmins.

"He is of a similar mould to Shaun Timmins, a centre with the necessary attributes to progress to the back row," Brown said.

Caine, 19, the younger brother of former NRL player Joel and current Dragon Jess Caine, injured his knee five minutes into his first-grade debut against New Zealand Warriors in round 12 this season.

"Tony unfortunately suffered a severe injury this season that has kept him out of football, but we don't believe this will prevent him from playing rugby league and reaching his potential," Brown said.

Our recruitment staff and I have watched him over a number of years, and we believe he is an exciting prospect."

caine given immediate release from the dragons

BACK-UP St George Illawarra rake Tony Caine has been granted an immediate release from his contract to allow him to rest the knee he horrifically injured in 2006.
The 21-year-old wrecked his knee in his NRL debut, playing for Cronulla.
He switched to the Dragons and ended up playing nine NRL games and 14 Premier League matches last year.
Caine, a member of the red and whites' top-25 squad, took part in the pre-season and in the joint venture club's first trial of 2008, against the Bulldogs last month.
But the young gun felt his knee just wasn't right.
"This was definitely the hardest decision I have ever had to make," Caine said.
"I am confident that I will play again. I don't believe it is the end of my rugby league career, but I won't step onto the field until I feel myself that I am 100 per cent ready to compete to the best of my ability.
"I feel as though I was putting in an extra 50 per cent, but was still 25 per cent behind everyone else."
Dragons coach Nathan Brown admitted it was a great shame for both Caine and the red and whites.
"TC has made a great impression at our club and we are all very disappointed to see him stand down," he said.
"His attitude and commitment in his time here was outstanding."

It is really sad to read this.It is really tragic that it looks like Steve Price has ended a career with his attacks on the unprotected legs of kickers. And he finished Noddy's season last year as well with the same tactic.I hope he is proud of himself, it is not the act of o tough man.

ohhhh this from the warriors/storm game tonight?

something needs to be done about this, this annoys the crap out of me, sure he is one of the best forwards around today, but its not like it is "accidental"

the NRL need to step in and do something in my opinion

If his leg is so bad now, why did he play some first grade games last year ? I think you'll find it was an easy way out, because he didn't want to be there. He will sign with a new club half way through this year.

to be fair you could say the the same about high tackles

i think price is a great player, that charge down technique however is dangerous and should be stamped out
