Lost at sea.
The AFL has a media unit larger than any newsroom in the country as they see the management of their brand, public image and reputation far more important than the game itself.

On the other hand, the NRL and the ARL seem to think that they're in the sports industry and not the media and entertainment industry.

Fundamental tactical flaw.

Yeah that's what I was trying to get at... Cheers fitz

You are correct, and in fact there is also a problem with the "fans" or people who purport to be 'fans' of the game of rugby league.

You only have to look at this page https://www.facebook.com/TheFull80 a page of heroes that are happy that they received notoriety for making the Carney image go viral, or the page of the maggot that allegedly originally tweeted the image https://twitter.com/MarkRaider1

If the players in the game have a problem with behaviour then there are a lot of alleged 'fans' out there that equally have a problem and will always be a problem for the game of rugby league.

Gorden Tallis summed it up the best when he said that Todd Carney needs to surround himself with people that are actually his friends, not the hangers-on and acquaintances or morons that obviously didn't have Todd's best interests at heart. Carney needs to attempt to pick up the pieces and learn from this mistake, for if he doesn't he never will. This incident is his fault for putting himself in the compromising position to be scapegoated. I truly believe he didn't know the photograph was taken, because as he said "he felt ill" when he found out, like that sick sinking feeling you get when you're in a plane and the plane drops a considerable distance all of a sudden. I do believe he was shocked that someone not only had taken the picture but then distributed it. I blame Carney for putting himself in the position he did, it is a moronic act with the prank he performed and tossing his career away with the Sharks, because a player of his ability is nearly impossible to replace, just as Greg Bird was and still is. It's just a shame that he doesn't realise that the people he hangs around with or hung around with are maggots & imbeciles, for if they weren't this would not have even been heard about. Todd needs to learn in life what is and isn't appropriate behaviour, I don't believe he has mental issues he just needs to grow up and act his age & reassess who his friends are and hangs around with. I still believe his sacking is excessive. (He may have pissed into the air, but he didn't authorise anyone using the image or putting it in the public for viewing because he didn't even know the maggot Mick Robinson had taken the photograph.)

I believe the ASADA investigation has obviously been a factor in regard to the way it has affected the club, and the club has been quite directionless without Flanagan as coach. (17 months later and still no finalisation)

The club was in decay for a considerable amount of time on many different levels, and that includes the club being run by people that should never have been running the club, and being without a CEO for a very long time and poor governance and structures.

There have been too many disappointing things happen to this club over the years to list.

Getting rid of John Lang
Letting David Peachey go
Letting Tawera Nikau go
Tevita Latu
Brett Seymour
Albert Kelly
Greg Bird
Getting rid of Kimmorley
Letting Tyrone Peachey go
Todd Carney

They are only a few of the disappointments, the list goes on.

Gut wrenching.

Letting Chad Townsend go, he is going ok with the warriors ATM.

Chad/Brown might have worked actually.

Oh well. Let's just go off and buy an uncommitted flippant player with a criminal record instead.

Crap like The Footy Show doesn't help the codes image either. In fact it probably does a fair bit of damage.

Yes, but the AFL has one as well doesn't it HB?

It does and Sam Newman is a ****wit of epic proportions. I don't think it's as immature as ours though, maybe someone else has more informed input on that though?

Is Sam even still on it? I don't watch either actually so I can't really comment on the content. Free to air needs more shows like Sterlo - a bit of light humour but all about the football. Sadly I don't have Foxtel so I don't get to see Sterlo at all but people tell me it's all about the footy.

Totally.

And then we have Channel 9 harassing the Sharks for bringing the game into disrepute.

Their antics on prime time TV probably has a much worse effect on the image of the game to the soccer mums of Australia.

Same mate, on all of that.

Yep I've always thought that, it is extremely embarrassing television.

From what I've seen, that show is utter crap too.

As for the Sydney Show, how many times can making someone almost vomit be funny? Thanks Gynge!

Promote the hell out of Beau Ryan hosting nude for 3 hrs, week later sack Carney for bringing the games image into disrepute... Sounds like #flannologic

You also only have to look at the channel 9 coverage of the game. You have immature blokes like Fittler and Johns carrying on like primary school kids in the playground during games and especially when on the sunday version of the footy show. It's so embarrassing to watch and does nothing for the image of the game.

I know it's a long way off, but I really hope a different network gets the rights for 2018 onwards and treats the viewer with a bit more respect.

Agree totally HB. Joey I don't mind too much as he does have a football brain, but Freddie is just...well...there's no other word to describe him...dumb. On the Sunday Footy Show as well (only watch it when we've won the previous night or day) Freddie has this annoying habit of just staring at the camera as if his face is going to be enough to send us into convulsions of laughter. Not many people in the history of television and movies have been able to do that and get away with it. What makes Ch 9 think Freddie can do it?

Mate this is a really good point. Carneys actions were bad but how wasn't Beau hosting the footy show nude not bringing the game into disrepute? There is a massive double standard.

It's all about lowest common denominator stuff... with a particular emphasis on the word "common."

Just a load of puerile toilet humour and "boys club" rubbish. I agree with a post SF made in another thread that (should she ever wish to pursue it) Erin Molan would have a strong case for employer-sanctioned workplace sexual harassment.

The problem with Rugby League so often stems back to the way physically grown men seem to think it is acceptable to act like silly teenage boys. Grow the ^&*% up!

That's not just on the Footy Show or the NRL players but also at the very grassroots of the sport at the junior park footy. Seriously, who turns up to watch their fat, rat-tailed kid play in the U/8s banging on a fag and downing a longneck and barking out abuse. Or punching on with some opposition's parent in the carpark.

The mass boganisation of Australian culture is largely to blame too. It beggars belief how many people take pride in being ignorant and stupid.

The shame is that we're progressively heading towards the normalisation of these sorts of behaviours, in acceptance of stupidity and the promotion of thoughtlessness.

You can't tell me Erin didn't love it. Hell I wouldn't even have minded being up on that panel! ;) But surely its all a bit of fun and games however it is double standards when you compare it directly to carney's case, but he retired the week before, so essentially he wasn't playing rugby league at that point.

Totally agree Fitz. A good example of your grass roots point is when I was playing under 13s my coach got in a punch up with the opposition coach.
