Site been down again tonight?

Yeah unfortunately not related to anything I was doing. The hosting company changed hands last year, and migrated to new servers, hasn't been real reliable since. Another reason why I would like to start fresh and have something that I can more easily move to new servers. Will get back to this topic, work intervened this week!

Our 2 Apple TVs have both shutdown their YouTube services. They're **** anyway, they don't even let you add apps and they have the worst remote in history.

What are some cheap but solid alternatives? I know a few have been mentioned before in this thread.

We're not going to upgrade to a smart tv yet because this one still works fine, and I'm not going to invest in an expensive tv while I still have toddlers because they're just brutal.

I'm in the same boat with a 15 year old Plasma TV. Still works fine so I see no need to upgrade.

I bought 2 x Vodafone TV boxes a couple of years ago for $70.

Only thing is it doesn't support Kayo because Vodafone is seen as a competitor I suppose.

I got around this by following instructions in this link https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/03/kayo-sports-kodi-add-on.html

So basically, rather than downloading Kayo via Google Play Store you're installing it as an add on.

I have a few mates that swear by Nvidia Shield but I didn't fancy dropping over $250 x 2.

I’ve got a Fetch box. It goes good.

Does the job if you don't mind controlling from your phone, can be a bit clunky fast forwarding/rewinding.

I like a remote.

Buy the new Chromecast then.

Chromecast with Google TV. Let's you add Kayo as an app, and has a simple remote.

The NVIDIA is a good investment. Costs more up front, but honestly, you'll end up going through 2-3 very unsatisfying alternatives and waste that cash along the way

Look I don’t know if it’s the best deal around but it was good for what we need. $65 for the net (including 5G) $20 for the box. That’s with Dodo.

Yeah was similar when I was looking which is why I bought a refurbished unit for$250. Had it for 3 years now which equates to $720 if I did it monthly.

Anyone had to replace the battery in their NBN box? It's not hard or expensive, but the house is less than 5yrs old, NBN box even less, and just seems a bit **** to have to replace it especially when it only kicks in during a blackout

Update on this.

Battery alarm on the NBN started going off nearly 2 years ago, I quickly replaced it, cost about $50-$60.

Easter long weekend, not even 20 months since replacement, started going off again every 15 mins.

Did a bit of research this time. When it goes off every 15 mins, and it's a pretty loud shrill beep, it means the battery is at 50% capacity. So by that maths, you have to hear it go off 4 times an hour to make you aware it's going to go flat in another ~ 20 months time. ****ing lunacy.

There's a snooze button, that gives you a reprieve for 24 hrs, but it's a rough estimate, you can have the snooze switch off at 2am.

I've been snoozing it since Easter, because like I said, it's still half capacity. But truly got the ****s this week with it.

Took out the battery altogether, and no more alarms and if anything, the internet works a tiny bit better.

It's only used for backup in a blackout, so I've just sat the battery next to the box, and if I ever need it, I'll throw it back in.

So if anyone has the same issue, don't replace, just take out.
