We deserved Ricky's blast: Sharks' Bird
May 27, 2008 - 7:37PM

Cronulla five-eighth Greg Bird claimed coach Ricky Stuart had every right to be disgusted with his side's effort in going down to the Bulldogs on Monday night.

The Sharks produced their most inept display of the season in going down 30-22 at ANZ Stadium, Stuart scathing in his summation as his side slipped down to eighth spot on the ladder.

Stuart banned his players from talking to the media after the game, Bird still a little sheepish as he begrudgingly answered a few questions at a sponsor's function on Tuesday.

Nursing a corked calf which he first picked up in Origin I before aggravating it against the Bulldogs, Bird said he couldn't explain the Sharks limp performance.

"(Stuart) was pretty angry, I think it was pretty justified too," Bird said.

"We really didn't turn up to play last night, it was disappointing after a couple of good strong wins the last few weeks to come out with that performance."

Much of the news out of the heated clash has centered on the over-aggressive tactics of Bulldogs superstar Sonny Bill Williams.

A fired up Williams became involved in separate push and shove incidents with Bird and Sharks prop Ben Ross, though Bird played down talk of any ill-feeling towards the Kiwi juggernaut.

"It was just frustration on both parts I'd say, I'm pretty good mates with Sonny so I'm just keeping him on his toes," Bird said.

"It's a contact sport, it gets pretty fiery and pretty emotional on the field, I think they're the things that come part and parcel with contact sport.

"He's a tough bloke to came up against when he's having a quiet game, and when he gets fired up like he did last night, he's pretty much unstoppable and I think a lot of their good go-forward comes off him."

Bird said he didn't expect his injured calf to keep him out of Sunday's home game against Gold Coast, while the Sharks are also confident of having Brett Kearney (ankle) and Paul Gallen (corked hip) on deck.

Scans cleared Kearney of any serious damage after he was forced from the field in the early stages of Monday night's game.

as much as i hate to say it, and i know im gunna cop it, but, Gall and birdy had very ordinary games. each of them let in a try by not sliding and they just seemed a bit flat.

both birdy and gall were putting down their performances post match and not using fatigue from origin as an excuse. both werent as involved as usual

Write Samuel L. Jackson's verse from Pulp Fiction on Simmo's wrist strapping.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children; and I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers and you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Apparently Bird suffered a corked calf in the Origin game which he aggravated last night, and Gallen suffered a corked hip, however both are likely to play on Sunday.

Stuart slams soft Sharks

SYDNEY - Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart slammed his side as a "disgrace" and "soft" after a 30-22 shock NRL defeat to the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium last night but also accepted part of the blame for failing to address their "relaxed confidence."

Stuart "tore paint off the walls" after the loss according to Sharks officials and banned his players from talking to the media following their five tries to four defeat which cost them a chance to jump from eighth into the top four.

The Sharks led 4-0 after five minutes but conceded the next four tries to trail 24-4 just after halftime as the Bulldogs ran away with the contest.

A late fightback, three tries to one in 17 minutes, helped reduce the deficit to eight points but poor handling and missed tackles cost the Sharks dearly.

Stuart opened his post-match press conference by saying his side had "taken the night off" before launching into a tirade against his men.

"That first half was disgusting, just disgraceful," said Stuart.

"We were dreadful in defence and that's one of our strong parts normally.

"That was just a disgrace in regards to effort ... we fronted up tonight without any attitude.

"We have not had a good kick up the bum like that in a long time.

"There could have been a fightback but then we went soft.

"If we play like that next week we will get beaten by 40 points by the Titans (next Sunday)."

Stuart said he had noticed the players' relaxed attitude during the week but after discussing it with captain Paul Gallen he decided not to broach the subject with the team.

Gallen said the players perhaps got too confident, particularly after scoring so easily in the opening minutes.

"We started really well and might have got a bit confident at the start and we might have thought it would be easy," said Gallen.

"No excuses, a poor performance all round."

liked the new bloke on the wing.

obviously too many changes in the backs meant that when kearney went, all we had out wide was massive confusion.

simmo had a more involved role(i dont know if he played any better though!).
poms was terrible.
brown added to, and was caught up in, the massive confusion that was our backline.
dougy-too many penalties.

noddy, snowden and peek were our best.

I thought the new bloke on the wing was Brown,Simmons was on the other wing with Anderson moving to the centres to partner Pomeroy didn't the rookie take Anderson's place in the forwards please correct me if I am wrong
