IT'S 31C on a midsummer morning and holidaymakers are snaking their way to Cronulla's stretch of beaches. Boardies, bikinis, hats and lashings of sunscreen are everywhere - except out on a green square just a drop kick or two from Wanda.
The summer party is well and truly over for Cronulla's footy team as coach Ricky Stuart runs a squad of more than 30 behemoths, bulked up from the off-season, through a series of early-morning drills.
It's the Sharks' first training session of 2010 - a year of redemption for a club that was beset by off-field dramas and an unfathonable run of injuries last season.
The Sharks were pounding the turf on the field alongside Toyota Stadium by 8.15am yesterday. As the sun came out and the mercury soared, the sweat started to flow.
Summer pain for winter gain.
Cronulla have made 22 changes to their first-grade squad - more than any other club in the NRL.
But skipper Trent Barrett believes his new-look Sharks are already training with more cohesion than they experienced throughout their entire turbulent 2009.
"I think [the dramas of 2009] have brought the playing group together," a fit-looking Barrett said.
The Sharks' new recruits, former Manly forward Adam Cuthbertson, ex-Tigers John Morris and Dean Collis and Greg Inglis' 18-year-old cousin Albert Kelly, already look comfortable in the sky blue, white and black.
The major losses from the 2009 player group are forward Ben Ross, halfback Blake Green and utility back Brett Kearney.
"We've bought some players primarily for their attack this year in Dean Collis, Johnny Morris, Albert Kelly and Cuthbo," said Barrett. "They give us a bit more variation around the ruck so hopefully they're going to bring some more points to add to all the good things we did in defence."
While Cuthbertson will play in the second row, Morris and Kelly have both spent time trialling at halfback and coach Stuart - himself a former champion halfback - has not decided who will fill the Sharks' No. 7 jersey come March.
The position will be finalised during the Sharks' pre-season encounters, starting against Manly on February 12.
It's still early days, but a hypothetical Sharks 17 is: Nathan Stapleton, Blake Ferguson, Ben Pomeroy, Dean Collis, Luke Covell, Albert Kelly, Trent Barrett, Luke Douglas, John Morris, Kade Snowden, Anthony Tupou, Adam Cuthbertson, Paul Gallen. Interchange: Broderick Wright, Paul Aiton, Grant Millington, Reece Williams.
