Sharks Pre-season Update
8 December 2009
Scorching heat, half a dozen new faces and a season to look back on with discontent, is never easy for an NRL side to begin their pre-season training with. Nor is the fact that so many people are already writing off the Sharks chances in 2010. Voices from the outside dishing it out, trying to pierce the skin of what may seem a very volatile Sutherland Shire outfit from the outside.
Deep down however, not one player cares about what ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’ have to say. Not when it's gets personal. They’re skin is much thicker than that, and it’d have to be, after what they went through both on and off the field last season.
“I think we really grew a leg after last season,” coach Ricky Stuart said.
“The way we handled the disturbances and adversity was quite amazing, but we’ve got to action that now, action what we have learnt and when I say learnt, I mean what we created, and I think we created a very tough exterior… a tough bond between each other.”
A month of pre-season training has already passed and Stuart couldn’t be happier with where his side sits. A mix of football, swimming, cycling, strength and gym sessions have seen the boys mingle and knuckle down hard. It’s been a true test of character where the old cliché of ‘blood, sweat and tears’ has come into play and the boys are ready to rebuild their reputation far beyond that of their more “fancied rivals”.
“The boys are training extremely hard at the moment,” Stuart quipped.
“We’re four weeks into our program now and by the time we get to the Christmas break we’ll have covered exactly what we would have needed to.”
Forget the fact the squad consists of 14 new faces. There is a synergy there, and come round one against the Melbourne Storm, you’d have thought the Sharks had been swimming together for years.
“We’ve got a lot of new players who have been introduced into the squad, and into our culture, and they have already gotten to know each other pretty well.”
“There’s a great mix of players there, from the experienced to the youth, and players who can cover a number of different positions.”
“The whole squad has impressed me with their attitude towards the hard work that we keep dishing out to them.”
