So lets say the development proposal is unsuccessful. This will no doubt be a telling blow to the leagues club which is still heavily in debt. Ultimately the debt needs to be paid so whats to say the development of sorts goes ahead at a later stage anyway after the sharks have died. Seems like this would be a lose lose, note St G supporters not considered.

Having just returned from the Planning Assessment Committee's Public Meeting, I would firstly like to thank the panel members for letting all members of the community have their say. At the end of the day, the vast majority of speakers were in support of the proposal.
Typically the overall philosophy of those opposed to the development was that of "I","Me"or "Mine". As in; "traffic in MY street", "people parking in MY street" and "MY water views" etc.

Those in support focused more on "we" and "our" - jobs, housing, services and entertainment for OUR community - the people of the whole Shire!

On a serious note, I am angry that Cr Capsis stood up and claimed that he has been harassed and victimised by people who are in favour of the proposal, yet he sat there throughout the afternoon session and muttered under his breath as people spoke, he wandered around the room to chat with his handful of supporters and showed a great deal of disrespect to a number of people on his way out by way of some very offensive comments.
Very poor form.

It was tremendous to see such a varied demographic of shire locals speaking in support of the development today / tonight.
There were a countless number of valid planning reasons put forth as to why this development should proceed, which I felt easily countered the 'impact on shire lifestyle' arguements the small number of objectors raised.

I'm sure the PAC will make the right decision.

Well I gues after meetings yesterday the proposal will get the go ahead , those in favor well outnumbered those against throughout the day. One point not lost to the panel was that those speaking for the development all had distinct ties to the Sharks football team , where as those against came from the wider community. Lets hope in 10 years those that vehemently supported the development now are still just in favor of it then.

Interesting that those opposed to the proposal have been chanting the mantra that the only people in favour of the proposal are from outside the region...
And yet a local meeting, populated by local residents, saw 80% of speakers speak in favour of the proposal!

Well done to all involved.

We Deserve Better Than This Council!
Thursday, 26 July 2012

After attending the public meeting of the Planning Assessment Commission for the proposed Sharks development, I have to say that the level of disdain and disappointment I have for Sutherland Shire Council has reached an all time high.

After reading the council's damning report and sitting through the speeches of many opponents to the development, it was clear that they all felt the protection of the mangroves in the area was of vital importance, "a natural resource that must be saved!" And fair enough too, I say.

However, there was just one problem; on my way to the meeting, I drove east along Captain Cook Drive and opposite Cronulla Golf Club, the Council are in the process of ripping out hundreds of metres of mangroves, the bare stumps left exposed for all to see. Is it just me or is there some hypocrisy here?

When a speaker brought up this distressing fact, he was shortly followed by a fired up Deputy Mayor, George Capsis who, amongst other outrageous claims in his rant, made the following amazing statement, "Well! I'm not happy about the removal of those mangroves and I'll have something to say about that!"

Ummm, it seems to me that it might be a bit late to say something about it now, George! What are you going to do...replant them all?

Maybe you should have been doing your job and paying more attention when the Council approved this destruction in the first place.

Apparently the mangroves are only important when they relate to projects the Council opposes. At least the Sharks have made a written commitment to protect the mangroves in their care!

The sooner we can vote this mob out the better.

That's it now, we wait. The three person panel who we presented to yesterday now sit down and go over the whole application and recomendations and then make a decision. The chairman at the end of last night said it could be a while but would be weeks and not months when they announce their decision.
thanks mate

Sharks decision expected within days

AFTER 18 months of debate, a decision on whether the $300 million Cronulla Sharks development goes ahead will be made within days.

I'm just trying to prepare for the worst here, but is there a plan b the club is in mind if the development is not approved?

There are obviously separate legal entities, being the football club and the leagues club, of which the leagues club holds the debt as I understand it, does the football club remain in operation and has the nrl given an indication of what may happen should the leagues club be shut down?

Is there a possibility the development gets approved but scaled down on what is currently planned, and if it is approved, is there anyway those opposed to it can protest again, or is this decision the final outcome?

Thanks to whoever can answer these questions.

If the development isn't passed, it'll have no impact on the NRL team in the short term. Long term, though, I wouldn't be optimistic of our future - we wouldn't really have a home ground, or administrative facilities.

No - it's either all or nothing.

and if it is approved, is there anyway those opposed to it can protest again, or is this decision the final outcome?

If it isn't given approval, there is the option of taking it to the Land and Environment Court, and given the overwhelming support from the DOP and generally positive response from local residents, I think that we'd have a pretty strong case. However, that option would be entirely dependent on the bank extending the terms of the debt - we're already beyond the deadline that they set a fair while back.

The Chair of the PAC did say at the beginning of the day that the PAC had the authority and delegation to either approve, reject or approve with variations to the DOP conditions.

Pity they don't have the authority to sack the council.
