BRACE yourself North Queensland, the Cowboys’ premiership quest has waded into dangerous waters as they meet the NRL’s protected species — the Cronulla Sharks.

The week two semi-final is the Cowboys’ bogey game and they must break a curse stretching back to 2007 to stay in the hunt for their maiden trophy.

To make matters worse they have a face-to-face encounter with referee pets the Sharks who receive more penalties than any other team.

The Sharks have been awarded eight penalties a game, two more than the Cowboys receive each match.

They were at it again in their impressive win over South Sydney, winning the count 9-7.

Serial pest Michael Ennis is also free to play following two high shots in Sunday’s final, as his grade one high-tackle charge didn’t accumulate enough points to warrant suspension.

The Sharks have beaten the Cowboys twice this season, winning the penalty count each time, and won the previous finals clash between them in 2013 thanks to a seven tackle set.

North Queensland have the home ground advantage this week but the Cowboys have not passed the semi-final stage of the playoffs since 2007 when they beat the Warriors to advance to the preliminary finals.

From ‘’The Hand of Foran’’ to the ‘‘Lui pass’’, the Cowboys have always encountered controversy in week two of the finals.

Johnathan Thurston said last year’s 31-30 loss to the Roosters still haunted him.

That game was highly controversial with the Cowboys scoring on fulltime but the play was called back for a forward pass to Lui.

“Yeah, they always burn when you bow out like that,” Thurston told The Courier-Mail.

“However, you can’t give any team a 30-point head start, especially in a finals match.

“We learned our lesson there.”

The Cowboys should improve this week as key playmaker Michael Morgan was clearly hampered by his ankle injury in their week one loss to the finals.

Morgan struggled to find timing during the game and lacked the speed that had created so many opportunities for the Cowboys this year.

Cowboys’ backrower Gavin Cooper was adamant the team’s confidence remained high despite the loss to Brisbane.

“He’s been a big part of our team all year Morgo and we all trained really sharp last week,” Cooper said.

“We have to make the most of our opportunities though. A repeat set is enough sometimes.

“We will regroup. We will be at home and while we would have liked a week off, that’s not to be so we will take the long way and embrace what is ahead of us.”

The Cowboys have been dogged by referring controversy in the finals.
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan laid the ground work early for a defence of Ennis, who was perhaps fortunate to only receive a grade one charge, as any good coach would.

Ennis was placed on report for a swinging arm on Chris McQueen in the 68th minute in the win over South Sydney.

“For me, he’s coming over the player’s shoulder to effect a tackle,” Flanagan said after the match.

“We play a tough game. We don’t want to dilute the product we have.

“We now need to concentrate on recovering from this game and preparing for a super team up there.”

Why they are even talking about previous finals is beyond me, that's for the fans to buy into not for professional nrl players to still be pondering and giving conspiracy theories oxygen.
longer we can hang tuff with them the more self doubt will start to set in for them.

The whole penalty count thing does my head in. I can't believe people think penalty counts should be "even" if you **** up its a penalty..if you don't its not. its that simple. If your team has good discipline you wont get as many against you, if you don't you will. It should be that simple.
