My 7 year old did his first 5km race today and did really well.

Ended up doing just under 31 minutes which was 6:10 mins per km...was a big hill on the course as well.

Really proud of him, plenty of my mates wouldn't be able to match that time.

That’s a strong effort for a 7 year old

Because my wife and I are runners my 8 year old is also keen. We've been taking him to parkruns (5km) which are great and free. He's loving it so far.

Anyway, he's been going OK...this morning though I saw a story on a 9 year old that just did a parkrun in 17:40! That's ridiculous.

Did his first 10km run yesterday and somehow managed to run the entire way. Pretty impressed with the little fella.

Not running per se, but we went hiking last weekend with my 4 year old.
Hilly terrain in the forest with quite a few tough spots to negotiate. The little trooper refused to be carried and even told his mum to harden up (well, he didn't quite put it this way, thankfully, but that's what he meant) when she couldn't keep up. Cleared the approx 7 km course without complaining. Just said it'd been a lot of fun and wanted to do it again.
I couldn't have been more proud of him, on Father's day too.

The missus is worried about what the future holds. 🤣

Edited to remove the unnecessary expletive.

That's awesome mate. Get them being active early and it becomes part of their life forever.

Yeah. I don't care what sport/activity he chooses (currently going through soccer & karate initiations, aka the Cantona Course), but I won't let him become a couch potato.

100% agree. My 8 year old is very active, gets through a 10km run comfortably now, can ride his bike for 30km no problem.

My 3 year old is coming along nicely, has done a couple of 2km fun runs now, he wants to do more.

It definitely helps when they see Mum and Dad being active.

Does your 8 year old video game?

I’ve only got one kid at the moment (13 months) but have another on the way.

I worry a bit about the gaming craze that the young ones have

Plays a bit of Minecraft but only about 2 hours per week on a weekend, nothing on weekdays.

He has asked if he can have an xbox mainly because his mates have it. We've said no, not for a few years yet. We're one of the few families in my son's peer group that don't have a gaming console.

I'm with you on gaming. A mate of mine has an 11 year old son and he's addicted to Fortnite. He's mostly a really nice kid but if he's not allowed to play it when he wants he turns into a bit of a monster. Has physically pushed his parents which is massively out of character for him. That's an extreme obviously, I know not everyone is like that.

Yeah that’s good mate. 2 hours on a weekend seems like a pretty healthy amount.

It’s good to set the boundaries, some parents have their kids bossing them around
