The penalty we got was with what with 5 minutes to go? What makes you think manly the best defensive side in the comp is going to let you into the same scoring position again? Kicking a field goal from 30 metres out is easier then going 80 metres up the field again to score a converted try

Yup , it's all irrelevant if you don't score a try and we struggle at the best of times yet alone not being within striking distance. I see both points of view but I don't think taking the tap is as bad a decision as the times we used to take the 2 points last season which reflected our overly negative mindset.

Being within one point after a converted try you have the option of a field goal combined with the added pressure that Manly cannot commit a foul leading to a penalty and potential gift of 2 points.
Being within 5 points after taking 2 points, the Manly defense would tighten up and strangle our attack which already lacks the ability to pull out tires when they are needed. They would have be rushing up on us trying to force errors and cut down on metres.

mate when was the last time a team actually did that

Pretty sure one of the teams chasing did it yesterday, maybe Titans chasing the Eels? I was a wee bit drunk and listening to it on the radio so could be wrong

If you've got the opposition on the ropes you go for the try I reckon. If it's you first set at them for a while take the two and run it back from the kick off

You're exactly right.

Titans did it yesterday when they were trailing 14-22. Took the easy penalty which put them within six points with 18 on the clock. Very astute coaching and it's not really a surprise that they went on to win the game.

We've done it in the past as well, under Ricky Stuart if I remember correctly. Couldn't say who we were playing, but I remember the kick and the momentum shift it affected as a result.

Anyway, the point remains - it was ****ing imbecilic not to take the two when it was handed to us on a platter.

Most likely.

But at least we would have put ourselves in a position to win.

As a fan in the stands, would you feel more comfortable watching your team with a 7 point lead, or a 5 point lead? It would also have a psychological impact on the players. Given the Sharks confidence, put Manly on edge. Pretty significant. Might have amounted to nothing... but taking the tap was ALWAYS going to amount to nothing.

18 minutes to to.. you can do so much more in 18 minutes.. thats probably a smart move under those circumstances.

Ours is different, take the tap, go for the try or at least a repeat set (which we butchered), nail the conversion and get back down field to set up for a field goal.. with 5 minutes to go and against a side with one of the best defence in the league that's what any coach and captain would do.

Did you think we would have scored those two tries to stapo and mills? i certainly didn't. We were attacking well at the time and probably were unlucky not to score. Taking the two would have taken all the momentum away from us.

Im glad we are at least looking to score tries.

This makes no sense. If you are so convinced we were never going to score a try from the tap what makes you think we were any chance whatsoever to get all the way back up their end and score a try later in the game? We either have a try in us or we don't???? Lose by 7 or lose by 5 either way.

Agree - in the past we have been notorious at killing our own momentum and giving the opposition team a breather when we opt for the 2

Yup, the team needs some ongoing tweaking but not the time for wholesale changes. If we get to our last game and no chance of making the finals then just play our NSW Cup team. At least they are used to playing together and winning LOL
