ok, here goes. anyone who's familiar with cause and effect would know it is devilishly hard to prove but following are my thoughts on today's game.
no team can expect to win with 35% possession over the first 40 minutes. while our completion rate wasn't brill', that wasn't the main problem. the main problem was nags would score, we would kick off. nags would score, we would kick off, etc etc etc.
three tries on our rhs screamed good coaching ivan, not so much sticky. good sides playing well rarely come back from that kind of treatment and deficit. i don't know what poms was doing and i'm not certain he knew either; he looks dangerous in attack but his decisions and commitment (or lack there of) in defence need addressing. our goal line defence once had real mettle but that has not been at all evident this year and this must be a major concern for sticky and consequently an area of attention on the training paddock.
i will gladly admit to being critical of gal in the past but fmd i don't know where we would be without him. he is an absolute giant and to think he has signed on for the term of his playing life with the way things are shows just how much he loves the club. must be reinstated as our captain asap - i know others have suggested this before now, i am just throwing my support behind that motion.
barrett. he is just not doing enough for us. it's not that he is not trying, he just can't bring it when needed. it feels like the noughties all over again - we are flat in attack, struggling to post points and looking unlikely to challenge unless something changes. we need sticky to show some kahunas alah johnny lang's 'watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat - hey presto!' kelly to 5/8? i'm not aware of alternatives, mcgrady?? barrett to lock or bench. either would require sticky to, basically, admit baz wasn't the buy he'd hoped but he should be man enough to do so.
tim smith. terrible kicking game today possibly due to the broncs upping the pressure on him - welcome back to fg and welcome home stuff. looks to be trying hard and has had an effect in attack. defence is a concern but that can be addressed - look at soward for eg.
stapo. why he ever vacated the # 1 jersey is beyond me. we were all exultant when he came through last year having been without a decent fullback since peach. a tough game for him today but did more than enough to convince me he is back where he belongs.
wingers. these blokes will be so much better when we win some games; they both have what it takes. it's tough to come looking for the ball on days like today.
tautai. liked what i saw. more fg for him.
toops. contract must have read something like, 'i acknowledge that my proven ball skills will not be called upon for the next four years. instead, i will devote myself to tackling. and tackling.' seriously, he must be kicking himself. unless we start winning he will be out the door at hte end of next year like a shot from a gun. if we do start playing better, more go forward etc, he might get to rediscover the joy of making a great offload.
other forwards. same old story really. gal going hard all day. millo and snow, i think, are under rated - both doing quite admirably. am happy with morris at hooker (and at hooker only). not sure about dougie of the bench.
bench. pretty good. that was a b!itch of an injury to jc. would like to see more of wright - what does he weigh? reminded me of dave boughten. aiton making an impression every time he comes on - can he play 80? vave, well done him. stick around fella, we need more of your ilk.
well, that's the end of my novel but not the end of the story. the rest of the season beckons and it remains to be seen how it ends. i don't expect us all to be living happily ever after come october (?) but hopefully things will be a little rosier than is now the case.
