Sharks Move Home Game to Adelaide
BY BRAD FORREST

CRONULLA Sharks said today's decision to relocate one home game a year to Adelaide was a "commercial'' decision and "not the start of the Sharks relocating to South Australia or any other state.''
The Sharks will move their round six home game against North Queensland Cowboys to Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium in April next year, and also play a home game there in seasons 2010 and 2011, under a deal struck with the South Australian Government.

While the decision has drawn some criticism from Sharks sponsors and fans, Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said moving one of their 12 home games was "purely a commercial decision with the best interests of the club at heart, and a situation where we can expand

the Sharks brand.''

Zappia said while he was not at liberty to disclose the agreed terms he said the income for the Sharks would "dwarf'' that made by staging the same game at Toyota Stadium.

"The Australian Rugby League will also be helping us to promote the game in Adelaide next year,'' he said.

Zappia, Sharks and Australian coach Ricky Stuart, South Australian Minister for Sport and Recreation Michael Wright and SA Rugby League officials came together to announce the decision in the Rugby Bar at Hindmarsh Stadium earlier today.

In addressing the South Australian media, Zappia said the club was pleased to be able to bring elite level rugby league back to South Australia, and to be playing a role in fostering the game in that state.

South Australia last saw live first games more than a decade ago, before the demise of the Adelaide Rams, along with Super League.

"We're certainly excited about making Adelaide a second home,'' Zappia said. "It is a real opportunity for fans in South Australia to show their support for rugby league by voting with their feet.''

Minister Wright said: "The State Government is delighted to have secured this arrangement with the Sharks, which is a great opportunity for South Australian sporting fans to see the NRL first hand.

"Not only will this be a massive boost for South Australian rugby league fans, it will also show off Adelaide's world-class Hindmarsh Stadium to a broader sporting audience.''

South Australian Rugby League chairman Mark Siaosi said by committing to three years, the Sharks have "proven their desire to help foster the development of the game in South Australia.''

As a part of the arrangement the Sharks have also committed to working with SA Rugby Leagues Development Unit to conduct coaching clinics and visit local schools.

What do think of the Sharks decision to relocate one game a year to Adelaide?

Cronulla to play in Adelaide
3/10/2008 4:36:00 PM

Cronulla will play a home game in Adelaide for the next three NRL seasons.

The Sharks will play at Hindmarsh Stadium, the home of A-League soccer club Adelaide United which has a capacity of 16,500 people.

Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said the first match in Adelaide would be on the weekend of April 17-20 next year against North Queensland.

"We're certainly excited about making Adelaide a second home," Zappia said today.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said he hoped the fixtures would be the start of a long-term relationship between the NRL and the South Australian capital.

Hindmarsh Stadium has a capacity of 16,500. The Rams used to average around 12K. If its promoted right, and I mean rammed down the throat of every Adelaidian for a good 3 weeks prior to the match, I don't see it being a flop.

Christ they watch AFL and soccer - by those standards they ought to pull a crowd for a bout of C grade Tiddly Winks.

I reckon the only reason we are doing this is for the extra money given to have a game interstate, and a interstate fan drive. Smart work from Zapps imo.

No way we are going anywhere. Only club in the league that owns their home ground for farks sake!

The reason why you wouldn't do that is because these areas already have a fan base aligned with the team in that area.

This is all to gain a larger Support Member Base over time and for the sharks to sure them selves up just in case the league decided to cut teams in the future it makes as look good we are trying to spread the word and make some incentive $$$ as well.

The SA government is behind it as they have facility's that aren't being used and only get so many home games with the AFL and I would think that they could easily support another sport as long as the games are on a different weekends and with a bit of advertising they could get a good crowd but I think that will be left up to the SA Sports Minister to organise.

Lets just see what happens money is money its only one game a year over three its good for the game and some $$$ for us.

Dont worry to much guys its just getting our Brand out in the market I think you will find other teams will do the same.

Get your nose fixed if thats what your smelling. If the Sharks were doing anything like that the game would be played on the Central Coast where the NRL is offering $8 million to the team who relocates there. As far as I know the NRL is not offering any incentive for a team to head to Adelaide.

Why would you be expected to rock up to Perth every week just because 1 game out of 24 is being played in Adelaide?

And what about the supporters in the Shire who struggle to rock up to Toyota Stadium unless the team is in white hot form?

Its 3 games spanned over 3 seasons for f-cks sake.
