CRONULLA Sharks said today's decision to relocate one home game a year to Adelaide was a "commercial'' decision and "not the start of the Sharks relocating to South Australia or any other state.''
The Sharks will move their round six home game against North Queensland Cowboys to Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium in April next year, and also play a home game there in seasons 2010 and 2011, under a deal struck with the South Australian Government.
While the decision has drawn some criticism from Sharks sponsors and fans, Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said moving one of their 12 home games was "purely a commercial decision with the best interests of the club at heart, and a situation where we can expand
the Sharks brand.''
Zappia said while he was not at liberty to disclose the agreed terms he said the income for the Sharks would "dwarf'' that made by staging the same game at Toyota Stadium.
"The Australian Rugby League will also be helping us to promote the game in Adelaide next year,'' he said.
Zappia, Sharks and Australian coach Ricky Stuart, South Australian Minister for Sport and Recreation Michael Wright and SA Rugby League officials came together to announce the decision in the Rugby Bar at Hindmarsh Stadium earlier today.
In addressing the South Australian media, Zappia said the club was pleased to be able to bring elite level rugby league back to South Australia, and to be playing a role in fostering the game in that state.
South Australia last saw live first games more than a decade ago, before the demise of the Adelaide Rams, along with Super League.
"We're certainly excited about making Adelaide a second home,'' Zappia said. "It is a real opportunity for fans in South Australia to show their support for rugby league by voting with their feet.''
Minister Wright said: "The State Government is delighted to have secured this arrangement with the Sharks, which is a great opportunity for South Australian sporting fans to see the NRL first hand.
"Not only will this be a massive boost for South Australian rugby league fans, it will also show off Adelaide's world-class Hindmarsh Stadium to a broader sporting audience.''
South Australian Rugby League chairman Mark Siaosi said by committing to three years, the Sharks have "proven their desire to help foster the development of the game in South Australia.''
As a part of the arrangement the Sharks have also committed to working with SA Rugby Leagues Development Unit to conduct coaching clinics and visit local schools.
