Disagree completely; Rugby League is the best sport in this country hands down. However unfortunately our friends in the West do not receive the same exposure to the game that we do, all they hear is the constant off field garbage that taints this game. Do you think they hear about stunning golden point wins, or the heart show by our boys’ week in week out when they take the field injured ect. No, all they hear about is some wanker walking pout on his contract for more cash thanks to the tutelage of the world’s biggest wanker Mundine. Or the allegations of sexual assault and domestic violence ect. Their media showcases league as a game for thugs and meatheads.

However being in Western Australia at the time of the Western Reds I can tell for the brief lifespan of that club League was big. There are a bucket load of ex NSW and Qld residents who would make the way out to support the game, add to that the amount of Brits and South Africans that call Perth home and you have a large potential supporter base. In my time there, the birth of the reds saw the WARL grow to a 16 team comp, home and away season. Crowds were growing and the general buzz around league was gathering momentum each season. Then... Super League killed it. Bye Bye reds Bye Bye League.

Playing games interstate throughout the year is a good sign from the NRL, there is obviously the intention to consider expansion into these territories again. The only foreseeable problem is that with the current financial problems plaguing Sydney based clubs, it is more likely that Sydney based clubs will be approached and pressured into relocating to one of these expansion territories rather than expanding the number of teams in the current comp. Still you would have to think that this would be a minimum of 5 years away at this stage.

Living in Adelaide and a mad Sharks fan,i`am very happy to see a game played here, even better,it will be the sharks.I think it is good for the game to get a bit of interest in this AFL state. We have a great venue over here, and is about time it gets used for the best game of all.

At a guess,i would think between 10,000 to 16,000,Depends when the game is,the last game played here 2 years ago between the storm and penrith was played on a long weekend, which was not the best planning to get a good crowd.

Your right, NRL is East Coast. Thankfully though it has a chance of expanding beyond its traditional stomping ground because suffers of footy tropophobia (good word. google that sh!t) are becoming less and less.

My pleasure.

NRL game planned for Adelaide

A round six game in the National Rugby League may be played in Adelaide.

The NRL has announced its draw for the 2009 season.

North Queensland Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr says the club may get a rare opportunity to head to South Australia.

"There has been some talk about us playing Cronulla in round six in Adelaide. Whether that happens or not I'm not too sure," he said.

How sad.

Obviously you have not read books like Champaigne Rugby where there are fuill tour lists of the French 51 55 and 60 tours... you have a look at the teams they played in there... Adelaide, South Ayustralia, Perth, Fremantle, WA, NT, Victoria Melbourne, Monaro.... Back in those days League was wide spread over the whole country!

It was unfortunately Highjacked by the EAST and now is what it is... its a shame really.... small boy mentality... and people like yourself don't help.

well it was 'hijacked' by the east because thats where it became the most popular. and with popularity comes money, and with money you can afford to have the best players playing in the best teams, and as such have the best competition. until about 15-odd years ago the competition was called the NSWRL, it may have been the premier competition, but the QRL WARL and everything else was still running, but just couldnt grow as large and popular as the NSWRL. from there the NSWRL adopted teams from around the country and nz and became the ARL. After the superleague saga drew to an end, changes needed to be made and the NRL was formed.

There were ARL and Superleague teams from Adelaide and Perth in the 90s, but they died along with their popularity. However, by 2012 they say that the WA Reds will be brought back into the national competition.

Im all for rugby league being a fully nationalized game, but its somewhat not practical

At a press conference conducted this morning at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, the Sharks have announced that they will play one Telstra Premiership home game in each of the next three seasons in South Australia.

Sharks and Australian coach Ricky Stuart, club CEO Tony Zappia, South Australian Minister for Sport and Recreation Michael Wright and SA Rugby League officials came together today in the 'Rugby Bar' at Hindmarsh Stadium to make the announcement.

In addressing the South Australian media Mr Zappia said the club was pleased to be able to bring elite level rugby league back to South Australia and to be playing a role in fostering the game in that state.

"We're certainly excited about making Adelaide a second home," Mr Zappia said. "It is a real opportunity for fans in South Australia to show their support for rugby league by voting with their feet.

"I'm sure Hindmarsh Stadium will showcase both our club and the sport in a positive way to many South Australians, while at the same time the games are sure to attract plenty of interest and numerous interstate visitors."

The first match in the three-year arrangement will see the Sharks take on the North Queensland Cowboys in round six of the 2009 NRL Premiership, a game to be played on the weekend of April 17-20.

In joining Stuart and Zappia at the media conference, Minister Wright also spoke positively about South Australia hosting the Sharks for the next three seasons.

"The State Government is delighted to have secured this arrangement with the Sharks, which is a great opportunity for South Australian sporting fans to see the NRL first hand," Minister Wright said.

"Not only will this be a massive boost for South Australian rugby league fans, it will also show off Adelaide's world-class Hindmarsh Stadium to a broader sporting audience."

South Australian Rugby League chairman Mark Siaosi said the Sharks playing Telstra Premiership matches at Hindmarsh Stadium will lift the profile of the game in South Australia.

"It will greatly assist local clubs in their endeavours to provide players of all ages with the opportunity to play the sport of rugby league," Mr Siaosi said. "With Channel 9 this year having a direct telecast of State of Origin and the NRL Grand Final, school boys playing in South Australian competitions have seen the game at the elite level - and now they will get the opportunity to see it live at Hindmarsh.

"By committing to three years, the Sharks have proven their desire to help foster the development of the game in South Australia.

As a part of the arrangement the Sharks have also committed to working with SA Rugby League's Development Unit to conduct coaching clinics and visit local schools.

"NRL coming to Adelaide will be a great shot in the arm for the game in South Australia and the local competition will no doubt begin 2009 with great enthusiasm," Mr Siaosi added.

Cronulla Sharks' Luke Covell crosses for one of his three tries against the Penrith Panthers in June.

NRL powerhouse the Cronulla Sharks will play three premiership games in Adelaide over the next three years - and plan to make our state their second home.

Sharks and national rugby league coach Ricky Stuart made the announcement at Hindmarsh Stadium today, saying he wanted Adelaide to become the Sharks' second home.

Cronulla will play the North Queensland Cowboys in April 2009 and expect the 17,000 seat stadium to be close to full.

"I think it (Hindmarsh) is a real rugby league ground, the kind of place players will like to play on and fans will like to watch the games in," Stuart said.

The Sharks will consider playing more games in Adelaide at the end of the three-year experiment.

Minister for Recreation and Sport Michael Wright said the matches were an exciting opportunity for South Australian sports fans.

"Not only will this be a massive boost for South Australian rugby league fans, it will also show off Adelaide's world-class Hindmarsh Stadium," he said.

The Sharks lost 28-0 to grand final favourite the Melbourne Storm in last week's preliminary final.

The last first-class rugby league team to call Adelaide home was the Adelaide Rams, which folded in 1998.
