Stuart sticks by Kelly after Rabbitohs' air raids help them to record a victory at last

Sharks 8 Rabbitohs 30

In a match that Souths hooker Issac Luke almost missed, it will be Albert Kelly who will be hoping that fans had problems catching the game, Unfortunately for poor Kelly, he was unable to catch much himself.

The bombs that tormented the 19-year-old as the Sharks' losing streak hit 13 matches were big, but not big enough to open up a hole he could creep into.

In just his third first-grade game and his first at fullback, he was targeted with dipping and swerving high balls by the Souths halves John Sutton and Chris Sandow, which brought down proof of life on Mars.

''I don't feel for him because he's learning,'' Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart said of Kelly.

''There's a lot of better catchers in the game that wouldn't have caught those bombs. That's his first game of first-grade football for 80 minutes. What I'm wishing is I had another 16 of him. That kid's brilliant, he's going to be a real player, that kid, but I'm certainly not going to burn him out at this level. He's just learning. We had a chat this week; he expects a lot of himself, but I think it was a relief when I told him that he wasn't going to be the player I think he will be until 2012.

''He's got two years of under-20s, that boy, but he's better than a lot of other players I've got so I've got to play him in first grade.

''He's a real tough competitor, he's a real tough kid. He's something we haven't got.''

That they haven't got a win either is the result. The Sharks remain the only side yet to win this season and with matches against Parramatta and Manly to come, the light at the end of the tunnel is barely flickering. The Sharks are one short of the worst losing streak in NRL history, earned by Western Suburbs in 1998-99, and the carnage could well continue.

''The result's always going to be the same if we keep making those errors with the football,'' Stuart said. ''We can't keep giving teams a leg-up, which we are doing at the moment and continuing to do. We've done it since our first trial.

''You get a little bit sick of looking around the changing rooms and seeing poor body language and heads down after a game. We've got to try and break that cycle … soon.''

After the Sharks had opened the scoring through winger Luke Covell (not just Luke was late to this game, obviously; a number of Rabbitohs clocked on late for the first try), Souths hit back with three tries in 10 minutes to put some distance between the two teams.

The first came via the cool hand of Luke. The hooker did well to grip a greasy ball and handed centre Beau Champion the first try for his side.

The Rabbitohs were adapting to the wet conditions. Their forward pack, big in size and reputation but not in their opening two performances, were mudlarks, rumbling forward as Luke and other livewires took advantage.

Champion scored again in the 18th minute and four minutes later Colin Best scored against the club for which he made his debut. Then just two minutes into the second half, the forward with possibly the biggest reputation of all, Sam Burgess, scored his first NRL try for his new club, stretching to score after good work from latecomer Luke.

The night was not perfect for the Rabbitohs, who lost interchange Dave Tyrrell to a possible fractured cheekbone. But after a peculiar start, it certainly finished well for them.

SOUTH SYDNEY 30 (B Champion 2 C Best S Burgess I Luke tries I Luke 4 C Sandow goals) bt CRONULLA 8 (L Covell B Ferguson tries) at Toyota Stadium. Referee: Shayne Hayne, Brett Suttor. Crowd: 10,741.

as i said before, if he catches even 2 he would easily have been our best

I agree but next week not at fullback please. I would maybe move barret to lock. Smith to half kelly or lewis to 5/8 maybe ferguson to f/b, taitai? or gordan to wing and if collis is injured then taitai to centre. Just an idea. Barrett if a ****ing passenger at the moment. He is trying to lead but he is leading us nowhere. I am assuming he is calling the shots on the field and its not happening.

just reading some of the article that are appearing it sounds like kelly may not play next week as ricky says he doesnt want to 'burn him out' and doesnt expect him to hit his straps until 2012 (which is not disimiliar to barba, luke and sandow, all similiar players)

im sorry but WHAT THE ******?

nah hes right, stapleton can be a right bitch at times, its one of the things that stopped him playing 1st grade sooner. he always seems to pick up serious injuries that take just a couple minutes to heal.
evidence of this appeared in tonights game.
evidence was also present that he is one of our most (only?) dangerous players, and I think he was even better at centre than fullback. definately needs to stay in the team

speaking of centres, how dangerous did tupou and fergie look charging around together, i never would have said this before tonight but tupou to centre next to fergie actually sounds pretty good!
only problem is that leaves us very light in the backrow

Just updating the quotes thread and noticed the first post:

He had a shocker against Canberra in the heavy rain at Endeavour, was replaced at half time and dropped to reserve grade.

it wasnt just tonight though, its often, dont get me wrong, I think hes one of our brightest stars, and one of our most dangerous atm, but whether the game is over or not there is no excuse for softness. and im not talking about the milked highshot penalty either.

I am not about to bag any of our players, if you have no leadership from the top or any motivation from the person who should be doing that, then how the hell can players perform on the field?

It has been 9 months since we won a game, and who is to blame, the coach!
Ricky has simply got to change his own attitude and become more positive instead of moping around, there is always an excuss why we were bad.

Take the blame Ricky stand up and say it is your fault, as the buck does really stop with you.

PS: I think Kelly is going to be a super star.

I was absolutely stunned with last night's performance.

In a game I thought we could win, we turn in a pathetic performance like that.

If Ricky plays Kelly at fullback again we may as well be handed the spoon now.

He is a 5/8/halfback and with Barrett and Smith there, chuck him on the bench as a utility.

I know it was wet last night but in all seriousness that was one of the worst performances I have ever heard from a Sharks team.

It looked very promising early with that early try but coupled with a couple of dumb penalties we throw the lead away.

I've said it once and I've said it a million times, if we learn how to control the football we will win games.

That is something Ricky should be focusing on at training leading into this weekend's game against Parra.

Keep Kelly at back or in the team. There was this guy from New Zealand once, Who had a shocker year of ball handling, the coach, the team stuck with him, now look at THE BEAST!

Dropping Kelly will kill his confidence, He has skill, He's young, Only way to get NRL experience is to PLAY in the NRL. Lets not throw hate or the axe at this young guy. He needs support & faith to build him back to what he will become. Give it time, hang in there. I know everyone is hurting from them loss, But putting the blame on someone wont help the situation. Got to stand together & hang in there, I know it's tough!

If we put another performance like that together, I will find it very hard to go to another game till things change.

We need to stick by Kelly, its not his fault he is playing out of position. Its not halfthe players fault they are all playing out of position, its the coach. I am over him he needs to go.

We have the talent to get us out of this rut we are in, I have no doubt about it. I dont think we have the coach to get us out of this rut. He doesnt have an attacking bone in his body, the only way we are going to win is score and he couldnt score in a brothel.

Y'know, I've bagged out Stapo ever since he hit first grade. I've thought him to be overrated, scared, soft, etc. But I think centre may be his position. He looked much more comfortable, and his defence was relatively solid. Not to mention we now have a centre who can CATCH and PASS. Should be paired with Fergo, in my opinion.

Despite the high balls, Kelly showed a lot of promise. Honestly, out of almost every kick return he looked to break the line! For someone his size, age, amount of NRL games under his belt and against a solid show of defence from the Bunnies, I find that outstanding. I feel sorry for the kid - after that second high ball, Sticky should've moved him positionally straight away. Not bench him, but move him around the park - a place in the halves.

Anyway, what's done is done.

I'm sorry but I don't see how Stapleton is soft. He runs the ball back hard and is safe under the high ball. He should never have been moved from fullback.

Regarding Kelly, I'll just put it down to a bad night in crappy conditions. He dropped one ball and then lost all confidence. I think he's is better than what he showed last night. Chin up son!

I'm not sure about moving him. I was happy for him to stay there and give him the opportunity to play himself into form. If you move him, it's going to crush him anyway because you are not placing any confidence in him to do the job that he was originally asked.

I'm sure he usually knows how to catch, I just think he had a bad night. Other than the catching, he was reasonably solid.

No matter what you think of Kelly at fullback, Stapleton to the centres was a good move. He was very solid defensively (he wasn't at fault on either try on that side), looked good with the ball and put his winger in for a try the only time he had the chance to.

If we are going to move Kelly away from fullback I would prefer that Stapleton stays in the centres and that one of Gordon, Wright, Ferguson or Gardner plays fullback.

So just leave him subject to the barrage of high balls to drop all night? It would shatter his confidence much more than moving him into another position. Fullback's a difficult role to undertake - once you drop one ball, a team will bombard you all game. It's happened to me, and it's one of the worst things in the world. The pressure is unbelievable. Once I was moved back into the centres, I was cheering. We know, and Kelly knows, he's not a fullback. Would've he prefered to take the opportunity to slide into a more comfortable position? Probably, or sink into a hole in the ground.

I understand what you're getting at though, and may seem a bit of a 50/50 call.

Fullback is a very important position. Do you know that Gordon, Wright, or Fergo will go good there?

Gardner is good there but is he physically strong enough for NRL?
