Family fun when Sharks take on Tigers
August 14, 2009

A special ticketing offer, the chance to kick a ball around Toyota Stadium and a ‘party in the park’ are some of highlights of an afternoon where the Sharks take on a Tigers outfit desperate for a win to remain in the semi final race.

Family Fun Day offers a $40 family ticket price, extra entertainment for the kids, including the opportunity to run around on the Toyota Stadium turf after the game, while the Summertime Bar will open its door to the fans post-match with player presentations and a live band.

But while the festivities away from the field present plenty of appeal, on the paddock the action will be equally appealing, with a battered, yet far from beaten Sharks side, looking to put a dent in the Tigers finals aspirations.

While the Tigers arrive on Sunday full of confidence following five straight wins, they realise they will have to be on their game against a Sharks team which gives their all each and every week.

Also enhancing the Sharks chances of causing an upset will be the likely return of international back rower Anthony Tupou, fresh from a three-week stint on the sideline due to a hamstring injury.

Tupou will partner Gallen in the back of the scrum in what is a formidable combination, throw in the in-form Grant Millington as well as hardworking props Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden, and the Sharks have the forward firepower to challenge the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

In other changes to the Sharks side, interchange hooker Terence Seu Seu has been ruled out with a hamstring strain, with under-20’s standout Lancen Joudo to take his place.

Consistently amongst the best for the Sharks in the Toyota Cup this season, Joudo deserves his opportunity in top company and is unlikely to disappoint, his darting runs from dummy half and his non-stop defence a highlight of his game.

The Sharks will also be without fullback Bronx Goodwin, who x-rays revealed has a broken shoulder, with Nathan Stapleton to come into the starting side after being named on the bench.

Also on Sunday, Sharks fans will be able to see two of their new recruits for 2010 in action, with John Morris selected on the Tigers bench and Dean Collis widely tipped to replace the injured Chris Lawrence in the centre. Both players come across to the Sharks next season.

The match on Sunday is set down for a 2.00pm kickoff and will be controlled by referees Steve Lyons and Alan Shortall, with Phil Cooley in the video refs box.

Despite playing away from home the Tigers will go into the contest as hot favourites, paying $1.36 on Sharks Bet, while the Sharks are listed as $3.00 chances.

In the earlier match on Sunday the Toyota Cup Sharks take on the fifth place Tigers, that game beginning at 11.45am.

Sharks v Tigers

Sharks: Winger Bronx Goodwin is gone for the season, with young Nathan Stapleton to slot in this week. Hooker Terence Seu Seu is also out. Yet again, there are whispers around the Shire that Anthony Tupou could return from a hamstring injury. I've been burnt by Tupou too many times to believe them. If you haven't already axed him, feel free.

Tigers: Centre Chris Lawrence is struggling and could be a late withdrawal. If you have a handy replacement centre, consider using him. As for Tim Moltzen, he's back in the No.1 this week after fullback Shannon Gallant was ruled out with a broken leg. This is bad news in Dream Team terms. If you have another option in the halves, play him. Moltzen may struggle to crack 20.

I had heard he was playing NYC.

game not a physical and fast paced, id call it a rest, esp after being in first grade for so long

He should be playing this week. And last week. I cant understand the reasoning behind it.

do not want to burn him out, a 19 year old playing alot of games in the NRL can take its toll, remember one GI was slowly brought into first grade, only a couple of games here and there, slowly built it up to point where he played every game..that most likely would have been the same for our young guns if the sh!t didnt explode when it hit the fan this year

ricky said the young guys were only going to play a few games here and there, plan did not go quite as it should have

Cant believe they arent playing Fergo.

Every team is always saying "we cant afford to blood the juniors as we need the wins" well we are in the position where we can give these juniors lots of experience and we arent doing so.

This is a barry crocker nothing surer, its not like he is a prop and might be injuried etc, fergo has been fine.

Also think he should of given Juodo a heap more time. Why not!, if it is due to the salary cap, than its ricky's fault anyway as he would of been able to get exemptions if he had applied for them.

Juodo has shown a heap of ability and it appears Ricky has decided he is the one for the future if thats the case give him matches while you can afford to, he definately looks strong enough to handle it, he is not going to be much worse than Hughes is he!!!

Finally I wonder if we will see Bukuya in first grade in the next couple of weeks. THINKING, that they saw him as the centre for this year, he has a couple of games under his' belt since injury and from reports has played well, this is one guy which needs some game time as he can REALLY be a gun of the future. Would be great to give him 3 games in first grade before next year, as if he doesnt get a run this year knowing Ricky he will think its to risky trying out new players next year as we need the wins! This is the one player we have that I reckon can excel at centre by next year. Wright still looks like he needs time.

all well and good to blood juniors but you dont want to burn them out so fast by playing loads of games in there first season so they turn to shyte the following season..

example of how to blood juniors, storm and GI, first season only played so many games, the following season they doubled it until he was ready for the week to week grind of the NRL..pity it didnt help him from being a doppy farkwit

htf is it sticky's fault with the salary cap?..its not his fault we have had so many players injured or suspended that we had to promote new players, those lower grade players would have shyteload of incentives in there contracts and if they play FG those incentives kick in meaning more money is taken out of the cap

Finally I wonder if we will see Bukuya in first grade in the next couple of weeks. the odds of seeing bukuya in first grade are about as good as sharks making the top 8 this season..the guy spent majority of a year out with a serious injury, he will be in reggies or NYC getting some game time in his legs before next season

Frustrated Tupou is looking forward to making amends
Josh Rakic
August 16, 2009

JUST a week after Ricky Stuart took aim at former players who had let down Cronulla this season, star recruit Anthony Tupou has admitted to feeling guilty about the Sharks' season from hell.

Set to make his much-anticipated return against Wests Tigers this afternoon after a three-week lay-off with a hamstring tear, the former Blues and Kangaroos representative said he felt as though he'd failed his teammates and hadn't realised his potential.

''It's been so frustrating this year. Whether I've been on the field or not, it's even been hard to watch,'' said Tupou, who joined the Sharks this year on a four-year deal believed to be worth $1.5 million.

''I've almost felt guilty at times, especially when I've been injured. I've felt guilty that I'm not out there helping the boys. Even though I know I can't do much about it, it just gets frustrating.''

The likeable 25-year-old said he expected more from himself after switching from the Roosters, with statistics showing he's made just 11 tackle breaks this season compared with a whopping 65 last year.

And he won't forgive himself until he makes it right.

''It's definitely up there as the toughest year of my career. Not just for the club but personally,'' said Tupou, who was overlooked for Blues and Kangaroos selection this year despite representing both teams for the past two seasons.

''This year just hasn't worked out the way I'd planned. But I'm probably mostly to blame for that. You've got to be consistent and have form on the board to make those teams. I can't blame anyone else for that.

''And I haven't been happy with my form this year, so I want to have a big one over the next few weeks to prove my worth. Make it up to the boys a bit.

''I don't blame injuries and I don't want to toss up any excuses. I've been trying the same but things just haven't worked out. I don't think I've been playing badly, just not as good as I expect from myself. I've found it hard to stand out.

''I just feel I could have maybe done more. I want to get back to playing that type of footy to help the Sharks out of this hole.''

Weyman junior makes the grade

NO, this isn't St George Illawarra prop Michael Weyman.

Meet his younger brother Tim, the 23-year-old who has been plucked from the NSW Cup to face the Wests Tigers at Toyota Stadium today.

He walks and talks just like his older brother, so it's easy to appreciate why Tim has already been tagged "Pony''.

"Michael's nickname is Horse so, yeah, the boys give me that a bit,'' Weyman smiles. But the nickname hardly suits the man. At 106kg, he's built like a bull.

Weyman, a full-time greenkeeper at Kogarah Golf Club, has earned a stunning call-up by Sharks coach Ricky Stuart.

"I'm ready to go. I'm a little nervous, but that's to be expected,'' Weyman said on Friday.

In a year tarnished by turmoil, Weyman's rise to first grade is a story of dedication and old-fashioned hard work.

About stepping out of the shadow - and a sizeable one at that.

Amazingly, Weyman was a five-eighth until he was 14. Small and agile, he used to run rings around Michael, who is three years older, in the backyard of their Moruya home.

"But then I started growing,'' Weyman said.

He followed Michael into the forwards, with his powerful frame and ball skills - refined from his days in the halves - sparking interest from the Canberra Raiders.

Playing alongside the likes of Todd Carney and Marc Herbert in the Raiders' lower grades, Weyman was just starting to find his feet before a knee reconstruction shattered his NRL dreams.

Or so he thought.

Trying to pick up the pieces playing bush football with the Gungahlin Bulls in the ACT, Weyman's coach Justin Holbrook recommended him to Cronulla's NSW Cup coach Alex Melville.

"He presented in pretty bad shape,'' Melville said of Weyman's arrival in December. "Coming off the back of a knee reconstruction, he had let himself go a fair bit.''

At his biggest, Weyman tipped the scales at 114kg. "And a lot of that wasn't muscle mass,'' Melville said.

"There were a few of my coaching staff who were hesitant to take him on, who thought he may have been too big a project. However, myself and the conditioner Mark Salmon insisted he wasn't going to play his best footy until July.''

Melville was right.

"I worked hard to get back into shape, with a lot of work from Mark Salmon,'' Weyman said.

"It was hard, but I got back to my playing weight ... and now I'm ready to go. I remember after a couple of games back from the injury, I was nearly going to retire altogether. It's a good thing I didn't.''

Handed game-day tickets for family and friends ahead of today's debut, Weyman has ensured Michael will be sitting in the stands.

"When I found out on Wednesday that I was a chance of playing I told him (Michael) straight away,'' Weyman said.

"He was as surprised as me, but pretty happy, too. He'll be here, which is special, and Mum and Dad will be, too.''

Wests Tigers turn to young gun to fill vital halfback role against Sharks

By Todd Balym
August 16, 2009

One is a lifeguard promoted to help prevent the Wests Tigers from drowning in the crowded pool of teams fighting for the finals.
The other is a lawn mower who has been cutting them up on the footy field ever since he was thrown in at Cronulla's deep end back in May.

Robert Lui and Scott Porter may be two of the NRL's most inexperienced halfbacks, but they'll be going head to head at Toyota Stadium.

For Lui, he will make his NRL debut as the Tigers ride a five-game winning streak but sit precariously at seventh place on the NRL table with just four weeks remaining.

Porter is a virtual veteran in comparison, having been thrust into the top grade way back in round 12.

And there is no doubt most pressure is on Lui, a 19-year-old kid from Townsville who is hoping to give his grandmother the perfect birthday gift and keep the Tigers' winning run going.

"I'm hoping she can come down and I'll put some magic on for her," said Lui.

"I'm happy (to make my NRL debut). I've just got to play my footy game and hopefully we win.

"I like to play pretty much an attacking game, really quick and just try to play like Benji (Marshall). I watch his videos all the time, Scotty Prince as well. Andrew Johns was my idol growing up so I would like to play like him, too."

Lui has certainly shown plenty of promise in the under-20s - he leads the NYC for line break assists (27), sits third for try assists (28) and has scored seven tries himself in 18 games.

But stepping up to NRL standard is a tough ask.

"I will probably get nervous, but other than that when I touch the ball it's switched on straight to footy," Lui said.
