Sharks hungry and at home in the wet
PHIL GOULD
June 6, 2010

Wet and slippery conditions dictated the style of play required for the evening.

The Sharks accepted the restrictions and built their game around traditional wet weather strategies. They were great. The Roosters tried to defy the conditions and play dry-weather football. Needless to say, they contributed to their own demise.

The Sharks were tough with their bodies and even tougher in the mind. They played as a team with single purpose and obvious desire.

In attacking zones they cleverly changed the point of attack with short passes on the inside and angle running. Halves Tim Smith and Trent Barrett swept from one side of the play-the-ball to the other before bringing the hard-running big men onto the ball. These constant changes of direction wrong-footed the Roosters defenders.

The Sharks' kicking game was well intended and for the most part brilliantly executed. They supported these kicks with a hungry, chasing team that put a lot of pressure on the men at the back for the Roosters.

They totally outplayed their opponents in the first 25 minutes to run to an unlikely 16-0 lead. From this point, the enthusiastic Sharks were never going to lose. The Roosters on the other hand, had this inexplicable desire to attempt the flamboyant.

Their forwards had good periods where they muscled their way over the advantage line with strong charges. However, the halves couldn't help themselves and soon had the ball spinning sideways.

They did find space out wide on occasions, but on wet nights such as this, this generally represented fool's gold, leading to more mistakes and further frustration.

It was silly tactics by the home team. The Sharks had the edge in attitude and really did beat the Roosters to the punch for most of the match. They were committed to a game plan. The Roosters played without direction.

TRY OF THE SEASON

A few weeks ago I pointed out the difference a few speed men have made to the personality of this Sharks team. They now know they can run in some points.

Well, young fullback Nathan Gardner set the stadium alight last night with the best long-range try you'll ever see. In the wet conditions he caught a high bomb only 10 metres out from his own line. He beat the oncoming defence with a neat right-foot step before skirting towards the left-hand touch-line to make ground upfield. He then ventured infield off the left foot and beat several defenders with a scything, swerving run, never at any time losing momentum. He finished up scoring in the right-hand corner, untouched, with a huge smile on his face. Brilliant stuff.

ORIGIN SELECTORS WERE WATCHING

If Trent Barrett was in the selectors' minds prior to kick-off, then he confirmed his position in the team with a very professional display. He's an Origin player. Paul Gallen was typically robust. Powerful with the ball and busy in defence, he has a work-rate that always impresses. For the Sharks he plays four or five different roles in attack and bobs up regularly on both sides of the field, so what role do you give him in a representative team? Still, there's no doubting his strong constitution, and on this performance he certainly didn't play his way out of contention.

Roosters half Mitchell Pearce was the other possibility. Like his teammates he was a little off his game.

Did he try too hard? Was it a case of second game back from a long break? He was brilliant on Monday night, but I got the impression his head was either still back in last week's match or maybe he was thinking too far ahead to possible Origin II selection.

This is what you get when you gamble on youth. You get talent, enthusiasm and energy, but a lot of this can also be misdirected. If Pearce wasn't in the NSW team before kick-off I doubt he forced his way into the side. If he was in the NSW team prior to this match; I don't think he played his way out.

There's no doubt he's an Origin player in the making. Selectors have to decide if they want to hurry his development. At least if he is chosen for the Blues, he will have the experienced Barrett alongside him.

the only concern i had with the game was, line breaks made by the roosters and the 4 trys they bombed.

For once I'm looking forward for the weekend to end. Had a bet with my english teacher, who's a roosters fan, that the loser had to wear the winning teams jersey for the day. Cannot wait to toss the jersey at him and never let him forget about it

I have MAJOR concerns about Smitty and TT in the defensive line together. Poms would be a better option on that side... my god, I never thought I'd say that!!!

Smitty is a great attacking option in the halves but his body positioning and reaction speed in defence is awful... it looks a whole lot worse when TT is charging the line early and leaving him hanging out like dog's balls.

Roosters 18 Sharks 42

Nathan Gardner played one of the finest games of his career as the Sharks upset the Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium last night.

The fullback scored arguably the try of the season and kicked seven goals from nine attempts for an 18-point haul as the Sharks demolished their more highly-rated rivals. They were more committed and, after averaging just 12 points a game this season, this was a breakout victory for the strugglers.

The Roosters, in seventh place, started the game as favourites after their convincing away win against the Titans on Monday. Nate Myles was playing his 100th first grade game and Sam Perrett was a late withdrawal after his wife gave birth to a baby earlier in the day.

The Sharks had won only three matches this season and occupied 15th place, ahead only of the Melbourne Storm.

But the Sharks started the strongest on a cold, wet night and they led 14-0 after 16 minutes. Grant Millington scored the early try after a break by Trent Barrett and a chip by John Morris. A few minutes later, Paul Gallen scored after Todd Carney made a mess of a high kick by Tim Smith.

The Roosters scored after 31 minutes, wing Phil Graham finishing off in the corner after Mitchell Pearce dummied and threw a perfect cut-out pass.

But it was a temporary reprieve, the Sharks scoring their third try when Sio Vave barged over from dummy half and Gardner converted for a 22-6 halftime lead. The Sharks had played their best 40 minutes of the season.

The Roosters had a halftime rocket from coach Brian Smith and it had immediate effect when Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored after a chip from Pearce bounced off Gardner's chest and he scooped up the loose ball.

A few minutes later, Gardner, in only his fourth first grade game, gathered a bomb from Braith Anasta five metres from his own line, beat man after man down the left touch, veered infield and outsprinted the cover to score in the right corner after a run of almost 100 metres.

Sharks supporters could hardly believe their eyes when, on the hour, John Morris crashed over for a soft try from dummy half and Gardner's conversion made it 32-12.

It was turning into a rout and a try by right wing Taulima Tautai, and Gardner's boot made it 38-12.

Roosters 18 (P. Graham, S Kenny-Dowall, T. Carney tries; Carney 3 goals) Sharks 42 (G. Millington, P. Gallen, S Vave, N. Gardner, J. Morris, T. Tautai, T. Barrett tries; Gardner 7 goals). Halftime: 22-6.

Barrett and Gallen fire - Sydney Morning Herald

Barrett and Gallen fire
ADRIAN PROSZENKO

Cronulla 42 bt Sydney Roosters 18

PAUL GALLEN and Trent Barrett have staked their claims for Origin recalls as Cronulla produced one of the biggest upsets of the season against the Roosters last night.

With NSW selectors agonising over the make-up of their squad for Origin II at Suncorp Stadium, the star duo both crossed for tries in a comprehensive seven-tries-to-two victory.

Should Barrett earn a recall, he may well partner Mitchell Pearce at the Blues' scrumbase depending on the whims of the NSW selection panel. However, Pearce's badly beaten forward pack did the halfback's claims few favours, giving him little time and space to work in.

Barrett is still undecided whether he wants to play on for a 15th season in the top grade. Sharks coach-in-waiting Shane Flanagan is doing everything in his power to convince him to play on, although contingency plans are being hatched. The Sun-Herald can reveal that the Sharks have made discreet inquiries about Parramatta playmaker Kris Keating. The former Australian Schoolboys half, off contract at the end of the season, is seen as a potential replacement should Barrett pull the pin. But based on last night's performance, Barrett should shelve thoughts of retirement.

Barrett and Gallen were everywhere. Gallen scored a try to go with his 27 tackles and 17 hit ups for 178 metres. Barrett, meanwhile, was at his scheming best, setting up tries with sleight of hand or boot. There was even a 40-20 kick. From the moment he helped set up the first try, to unheralded forward Grant Millington, an upset appeared likely. It was one of three first-half tries to the underdogs. Siosaia Vave collected the softest of the lot when he burrowed over from dummy half to help set up a 22-6 half-time lead.

The Roosters threatened to stage a comeback when Kiwi three-quarter Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored early in the second half. But any hopes of a revival were snuffed out by one of the most spectacular plays of the season. Sharks fullback Nathan Gardner fielded a Braith Anasta bomb deep in the north-east corner of the SFS. By the time he finished his run, in the opposite corner of the stadium, he had beaten about half the Roosters' defensive line on a diagonal run of more than 100 metres.

Last year, the same combatants were involved in a titanic tussle to avoid the wooden spoon. It took points differential to separate the competition's most ordinary sides. The Storm will account for the utensil this time around but, based on last night's performance, the Sharks should set loftier goals than coming second last.

NSW selectors have already been on a roller-coaster ride of emotions this weekend. They watched helplessly as Jarryd Hayne, Brett White and Luke Lewis damaged their Origin hopes with brain explosions. And then their hearts would have skipped a beat every time Gallen tangled with opposing lock Frank Paul Nuuausala. Two of league's toughest hombres were at each other all night. On one occasion, the Kiwi enforcer dared Gallen to put one on his chin. Gallen almost took the bait, cocked his fist … and a whole state held its breath.

CRONULLA 42 (T Barrett P Gallen N Gardner G Millington J Morris T Tautai S Va Ve tries N Gardner 7 goals) bt SYDNEY ROOSTERS 18 (T Carney P Graham S Kenny-Dowall tries T Carney 3 goals) at Sydney Football Stadium. Referee: Ben Cummins, Tony De Las Heras. Crowd: 7,934.
