True,
But im certain they need to give him a break after that.
I wanna see Albert Kelly in the half back position in all honesty, He played full back for us this year when he clearly wasnt one give him a shot in his actualy position ricky.

Why would you putt a 5/8 as half back?

Townsand is playing good footy and so is Porter. But i think smith will stay, when does Pomeroy come back because Tautai needs to go.

Broncos also fired up by Stuart's call - The Roar (blog)

Broncos also fired up by Stuart’s call
By Laine Clark
May 29th 2010 @ 1:19am

It was hard to tell who would be more fired up by Ricky Stuart’s shock resignation – Cronulla or Brisbane.

The Sharks will inevitably be motivated to begin a fitting send-off for Stuart against the Broncos in Saturday night’s NRL clash at Toyota Park.

But Stuart’s surprise announcement that he would walk away from Cronulla with a year left on his contract also had aftershocks at Brisbane.

Stuart was quickly linked to the Broncos job by Brisbane’s News Limited newspaper – much to Henjak’s disgust.

“I thought it was pretty pathetic actually,” said Henjak who has another two seasons left on his contract.

“I heard in the Sydney newspapers it was three other clubs and we weren’t even mentioned.

“That comment is worth the price of that paper I reckon.”

Henjak is feeling more comfortable in the coaching hot seat after the Broncos (10th; 4-6 record) arrested a worrying slide and clinched back to back wins heading into the clash with the second-last Sharks (3-7).

While Henjak would be forgiven for wanting to prove a point, the Broncos mentor was not sure what version of the Sharks would run out this weekend.

But he hinted the Sharks’ shock 22-18 win over Parramatta last weekend may have been a sneak preview.

“You don’t know how that (Stuart’s announcement) is going to affect them,” Henjak said.

“They certainly played with a renewed confidence and a freshness last week – maybe they knew before the actual thing was announced.

“Anyway, we are preparing as if they are going to be at their best – when they are they can play some very good football.

“And at their homeground, 5.30pm on a Saturday is their favourite timeslot so we are going to have to play well.”

In all, it was a day of mixed news for Henjak.

Moments after announcing Steve Michaels had been released to join the Gold Coast, enforcer Nick Kenny (calf) failed a fitness test and was cut from Henjak’s 20-man squad for the Sharks clash along with Gerard Beale and Corey Norman.

However, Henjak’s spirits were lifted by confirmation his Origin trio of Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday and Israel Folau would play.

“I am glad all three got through unscathed,” Henjak said.

“I have seen Locky’s workload be a lot more than what it was on Wednesday night.

“So I was pleased about that. It was good that they got a good win and they will be full of confidence and emotionally on a high.”

Meanwhile, Henjak said “nothing had changed” in contract negotiations with Folau, despite a report on Friday claiming the gamebreaker was tipped to stay with league due to Queensland’s Origin success.

“Hopefully he is getting a big close, but we are not going to rush him,” Henjak said.

“As long as he continues playing good footy and it is not playing on his mind we will give him all the time he needs.”

Sharks in trouble after latest loss to Broncos - Herald Sun

Sticky situation as Broncos beat Sharks
By DAVID RICCIO
May 29, 2010 7:49PM

BRISBANE skipper Darren Lockyer has showered praise on Sharks skipper Trent Barrett, saying he should be picked as part of the Blues' rescue mission in Origin II at Suncorp Stadium.

"I think he's definitely in the mix. He has played Origin before and done well," Lockyer said.

"Tonight he was probably Cronulla's most dangerous player, so I am sure they are keeping a close eye on him."

And a defiant Barrett spoke of the pact the Sharks players have made to stand strong during arguably the most tumultuous period in the club's history.

It was Lockyer who twisted the knife after Sharks coach Ricky Stuart and chief executive Richard Fisk announced their resignations last week.

"We've spoken about it," Barrett said of the private pact.

"As a playing group, we've had a fair bit to deal with in the time I've been here.

"Those sort of things are out of our control and all we can do is what we're paid to do and train hard, work hard for each other and have a good crack on the weekends - and we're doing that.

"It's up to the senior blokes to look after the younger blokes with what's going on, but it's not going to affect our footy. We're smart enough to know what to get involved in and what not to."

Last night's 16-point loss didn't reflect the tightness of the contest as Brisbane recorded their first victory at Toyota Stadium since 2005 largely on the back of Lockyer's courage.

If Lockyer wasn't scoring tries or setting them up, he was embarrassing his team-mates by saving them. His trysaving tackle on Barrett in the first half, when the game was scoreless, proved decisive.

"I thought [Lockyer] was our best, he led by example," Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak said.

"Backing up from [Origin on] Wednesday, saving that try and then scoring one himself, he made a huge contribution."

Stuart, who also sent a message of unity by sitting next to his successor Shane Flanagan on the sideline for the entire match, said Cronulla's bid to spread the ball in wet conditions backfired.

Halfback Tim Smith had a night to forget with some poor decisions in attack costing the Sharks a shot at back-to-back victories.

"In that first half we threw a couple of passes that didn't stick. They were probably dry-weather footy passes," Stuart said.

"I'm obviously happy with our first-half performance, it was probably one of the best first halves we've had considering the weather."

The Sharks had the best of the attacking opportunities in the first half, but the Broncos went to the break leading 6-0 through a try to Israel Folau, which was created by a deft Lockyer kick.

Then the Broncos skipper pounced in the 50th minute to make it 12-0 after rookie fullback Josh Hoffman sliced through some soft Sharks defence.

Lockyer inspires Broncos to win - BigPond News

Lockyer inspires Broncos to win
May 29, 2010 - 11:03 PM
Source: BigPond Sport

A Darren Lockyer masterclass has helped Brisbane overcome a dogged Cronulla 20-4 in an entertaining NRL clash at a rainswept Toyota Stadium on Saturday.

The 33-year-old carried on from where he left off against NSW in Wednesday's State of Origin opener, controlling the game brilliantly from five-eighth as the Broncos chalked up a third successive victory.

Both sides found points hard to come by in a keenly-contested opening period, despite the driving rain and slippery conditions, with the Sharks enjoying most of the possession without managing to transfer it into points.

This was largely down to some poor kicking from Tim Smith, who twice shanked the ball into touch on the fifth tackle with his side well placed to score.

The Sharks' best attacking moves were instigated by Trent Barrett, who has been widely tipped for a recall to the NSW side.

The veteran playmaker rolled back the years midway through the first half when he brilliantly re-gathered from his own kick and chase, just in front of the posts, before being hauled down by the ever-alert Lockyer.

However, with passing options to his right, Smith opted to kick and threw his head into his hands as his badly-weighted effort bounced into the advertising boards.

Corey Parker finally broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark for the Broncos with a close-range penalty after Anthony Tupou was adjudged to have stripped the ball from Parker's grasp.

Israel Folau, one of three Broncos backing up from Origin, grabbed the first try of the match with the last play of the first half, when Lockyer's crossfield bomb found its intended target and the former Melbourne star barged over the line.

Parker's conversion hit the post to give the Broncos a 6-0 lead at the break, but it was the Sharks who started the second half the stronger.

A brilliant run from winger Isaac Gordon looked destined for a try only for Matt Gillett to halt his progress with a last-gasp tackle on the sideline.

And the Sharks were made to pay for the missed opportunity when Lockyer, as he has so often in his long career, raced on to support a rampaging fullback Josh Hoffman to score his third try of the year, with Parker adding the extras.

The Sharks finally crossed for a try in the 56th minute when the hard-working Taulima Tautai burrowed over, but Smith, who endured a night to forget, missed the conversion to leave the scores at 12-4.

With Lockyer pulling the strings it was never going to be Cronulla's night, with the Australian captain starting the move that led to Parker slotting over his second penalty of the game to effectively seal the result.

And with the hardy souls who braved the awful conditions, trooping out of the stadium, Antonio Winterstein added a late try to add some extra gloss to the scoreline for Ivan Henjak's side.

Sharks v Broncos
29 MAY 2010

A Darren Lockyer inspired Brisbane has stormed into the top eight with a convincing 20-4 victory over Cronulla at a rain-soaked Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.

Having led 6-0 at the break, the Broncos doubled their lead nine minutes in when Lockyer scored against the run of play before the Sharks answered through Taulima Tautai on the hour to set up a tense final quarter in driving rain.

The Sharks had their chances but were unable to make further inroads as the Broncos - led by their inspirational skipper and his fellow Queensland star Sam Thaiday and Israel Folau - held on to claim their third straight victory.

NSW hopeful Trent Barrett was dangerous for the Sharks throughout in a performance that should have pleased state selectors, while lock Paul Gallen was also strong in a losing cause.

Neither side looked like scoring a point in the opening 15 minutes but the Sharks won the early arm wrestle in driving rain.

Cronulla back-rower Anthony Tupou created the first genuine chance of the match when he sliced through in the 18th minute and found a flying Isaac Gordon on his inside who was cut down deep in Broncos territory.

The Sharks looked certain to score but Tim Smith's decision to kick rather than send the ball through the hands let the visitors off the hook.

Despite having barely fired a shot in anger it was the Broncos who posted the first points on 29 minutes when Corey Parker landed a penalty goal after a contentious ruling for stripping the ball.

Barrett looked certain to score in the 33rd minute when he kicked and regathered, only to be denied by a desperate tackle from Lockyer.

Smith again took the wrong option, delivering another woeful cross-kick to the disgust of the home crowd of 7,826.

The Broncos appeared to have scored two minutes later through Folau but the Queensland centre
was unable to force his way over the line from close range.

But there was no denying Folau in the final minute of the half as the towering centre soared above the pack to regather a Lockyer bomb and showed tremendous strength to ground the ball despite heavy attention from Tautai.

It was all Cronulla to start the second half but again the hosts failed to turn pressure into points, and the Broncos made them pay when Lockyer scored under the posts against the run of play after full-back Josh Hoffman made the initial break.

The Sharks hit back six minutes later when Tautai crashed over on the back of a clever offload from livewire fullback Nathan Gardner to close to 12-4.

The hosts continued to create chances in the final quarter but a string of handling errors and poor options ultimately cost them.

Parker increased the lead with a penalty goal on 77 minutes as the home crowd scurried for the exits, before Antonio Winterstein added insult to injury with a try in the final minute.

Brisbane continue resurgence with grinding victory over Cronulla
By Ian McCullough
May 29, 2010

Captain Darren Lockyer was the inspiration as Brisbane Broncos continued their march up the table with a 20-4 victory over a disappointing Cronulla at Toyota Stadium.

Lockyer, who played a huge role in Queensland's State Of Origin win over New South Wales on Wednesday night, scored a try and a hand in another as the Broncos won their third match in a row to move into the top eight.

The Sharks' best attacking moves were instigated by Trent Barrett, who has been widely tipped for a recall to the New South Wales side.

With Lockyer pulling the strings it was never going to be Cronulla's night, with the Australia captain starting the move that led to Parker slotting over his second penalty of the game to effectively seal the result.

And with the hardy souls who braved the awful conditions, trooping out of the stadium, Antonio Winterstein added a late try to add some extra gloss to the scoreline for Ivan Henjak's side.

Broncos coach Ivan Henjak was full of praise for his skipper.

"I thought he (Lockyer) was our best tonight, he led by example and backing up the way he did from Wednesday, saving that try and getting one himself, he made a huge contribution to the win,'' Henjak said.

"Those plays turn footy matches and there were a few of those for us tonight, Darren's was the crucial one ... and they are the big plays we were not producing earlier in the season.''

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart was philosophical about his side's display and admitted Brisbane were full value for their win.

"They deserved to win the game, they replicated their first half, and I told our boys if they could do the same then they would be in there at the end,'' Stuart said.

"We perhaps threw too many dry weather passes and gave them a chance and we can't do that against good sides like Brisbane.''

Stuart also lamented two missed opportunities, with Isaac Gordon as well as Barrett denied by a last-ditch tackle early in the second half by Matt Gillett.

"Lockyer did a real good job there getting back on Trent and Gillett got a jumper pull-down on Gordon,'' he said.

"Both would have gone for tries ... and that was the difference in the end.''

Stuart joined Lockyer in backing Barrett's Origin chances and said NSW should have a natural playmaker at five-eighth.

"We need a guy like Trent ... I wouldn't put my name to it if I didn't think he was up to it, I wouldn't want to embarrass myself,'' he said.

"A genuine half is what we lacked, Jamie Lyon has got great ability as a centre ... I think Trent showed last year he is still capable of playing that kind of footy.

"We have to look at players that Queensland don't want us to pick and Trent is one of them as he tough and very experienced.''

Just returned from the game.

The first half was a brilliant game of footy by both teams, we were unlucky not to get some points on the board. We looked like a continuation from last week.

The second half was a tight game.
Our kicking game was all over the place, which did come back to bight us.

Great work by the guys, just the small things that let us down.

The final score did not reflect on the game as a whole.

My rating 7.5/10

Very disappointing game to watch in the fact that we were quite good but some individuals let us down. Really we had the better of the opportunities and should have won that game but unlike the usual trouble of a poor team performance but some good individuals it was the other way around this week.

Again I feel bad for picking on him but Tautai is a terrible terrible player and should not be in this NRL team or any other one. He must be dropped immediately!

Only one player worse than Tautai and that was Tim Smith. He may have cost us the game. I dunno if you can drop him or not but Porter has never played that bad and Tim Smith's best game hasn't been as good as Porter's best. Still dropping him will piss him off and a top performing Tim Smith is what we need so hard call. **** game though, he honestly screwed us badly in this game!

Cuthbo was doing well this week but then missed a really bad tackle that quite frankly ruined our chances in the game. If Tim Smith didnt cost us the game (although I believe he did) then Cuthbo prob did. Wouldnt drop him tho.

Finally the other really concerning part of the performance was our support play. We made so many breaks or near breaks and there was never anyone even close, well except one Gardner break and Gordon was there. But generally it was always Broncos players.

In terms of positives, Barrett was once again outstanding and Toops had the best game he has had all year by a country mile. He was outstanding, The Broncos focussed all their attention on Gallen and Tupou made them pay for it. If it wasn't for a couple of our players losing us the game then it was a mistake that would have cost the Broncos the game.

More minutes for Aiton.

Less stupid kicks from Smith.

More width and depth.

Less biased refereeing.

More fans bothering to turn up.

Less reliance on Gallen.

More getting the ball to Gards and Gordon.

Less rain.

More
beer.

Less off-field politics.

.... and that is more or less it.

porter has not played anywhere near tim smith... our 3 wins, tim has played better than porter could ever dream of.
i did see one piece of the game, where hoffman made the break, cuthbo put a nice shot on, then had a dead set air swing the one after, its lapses like that that kill us

That was Cuthbo's only mistake of the game but it was such a costly one and exactly the kind of laziness that is the issue with him. Ricky hooked him immediately.

I think Tim Smith is our halfback going forward and that his potential is alot more than Porter's so it is a tough call to drop him for one poor performance so I don't think it should happen. But I have to disagree with you. I don't think Tim Smith has had a great game for us and I do think Porter has. I also don't think Porter has had a bad game for us and now Tim Smith has had a horrendous one. Having said that do you want a great half back prone to a terrible game or a mediocre one who will not perform above or below average. I would say Tim Smith is the player we need but he needs to get better consistently.

Broncos Wear Down Sharks In The Wet
Trad McLean

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos have toughed out a strong win at Cronulla tonight, allowing only one try as they dispatched the Sharks 20-4.

“I never thought we were safe,” said coach Ivan Henjak.

“We had to tough it out there with our line getting broken late in the game but we were strong enough to hold on. I was really pleased with that.”

The Sharks started the second half with plenty of pressure on the Broncos, but a scything run from Josh Hoffman created a try.

Hoffman took an inside ball from Peter Wallace and broke the line, showing enough pace to ward off the cover and give his captain Darren Lockyer clear passage to the line.

Corey Parker converted and the Broncos led 12-0 in the 50th minute.

But the Sharks hit back with their first try of the match, some scrambled passes on the Broncos line eventually leaving Talima Tauta free to fall over the line.

The conversion was unsuccessful and it was 12-4 with 23 minutes left.

The Broncos missed out with a no try decision after it was ruled Israel Folau and a Shark had failed to control a ball that Jharal Yow Yeh dived on.

The Broncos had a couple more shots at the Sharks in the next few minutes but the Sharks defence was equal t the task.

Then it was the Sharks turn, hammering the Broncos line for two sets, but coming up with a mistake.

The Broncos would hang in though, a penalty to Parker with three minutes left then a runaway try sealing it.

In the final minute Matt Gillett picked up a loose ball and ran 60 metres before being tackled.

On the bell Ben Hunt grubbered in goal where Antonio Winterstein claimed the four-pointer.

It was interesting start to the game for the referees with almost 20 minutes passing without a penalty, and that was mandatory when Jharal Yow Yeh caught Sharks fullback Nathan Gardner a touch high.

It would take until the 29th minute for the first points of a dour game to come, Corey Parker potting a penalty after Anthony Tupou was pinged for stripping the ball.

Darren Lockyer may have played Origin three days ago but he saved a try when he dragged down Trent Barrett from behind after the Sharks pivot had chipped and chased and had the line open.

The video referee was called into action six seconds before the break as Israel Folau climbed high to get a bomb and struggled his way over as the Sharks tried to hold him up.

But the big centre was too strong, rolling over to plant the ball despite the attentions of three Sharks, Parker’s conversion cannoning off the post to leave the Broncos in front 6-0.

BRISBANE BRONCOS 20 (I Folau, D Lockyer, A Winterstein tries; C Parker 4 goals) defeated CRONULLA SHARKS 4 (T Tauta try) at Toyota Park.

Brisbane clinch rare away victory over listless Sharks
Written by: Justin Davies

Brisbane get a rare post origin victory, with a 20-4 win over Cronulla. In a dour game which never reached many heights, Brisbane were the first on the scoreboard in the 29th minute after a two on one strip produced a penalty, duly slotted by Corey Parker. Israel Falou scored on the stroke of halftime to make the advantage six.

The Sharks needed to get on the board first but their constant errors and erratic ends to sets allowed Brisbane fullback Josh Hoffman to spin through the line and set up captain Darren Lockyer for their second.

Cronulla finally got on the board in the 57th minute after some nice hands led Tautai to fall over the line but Nathan Gardener shanked the conversion to keep their defiect to eight and that would be as close as the game would get.

Both teams would engage in an arm wrestle with neither team taking advantage of the degeneration of the game. A WWE style clothesline from Trent Barrett allows Corey Parker to step up and kick a second penalty to put the game beyond the Sharks reach. A length of the field job again by the Broncos backline and finished by Antonion Winterstein made the final scoreline 20-4.

NRL Sharks Go Down To Broncos

The class of veteran Brisbane five-eighth Darren Lockyer proved too much for a brave Cronulla side on a soggy Toyota Stadium on Saturday.

In a match played in atrocious conditions, the Sharks battled hard before being outgunned 20-4 by the Broncos.

And it was 33-year-old Lockyer, showing no ill effects from the State of Origin opener three nights earlier, who led the Broncos to victory.

The match was a test of character for the Sharks – their first outing since the resignation of coach Ricky Stuart – and they proved they are determined to remain focused with a gutsy display.

While Lockyer was outstanding, his opposite Trent Barrett was easily the Sharks’ best player and may well have played himself into the New South Wales team for Origin Two in two weeks.

Barrett produced one of the highlights of the game in the first half, chipping over the top, regathering and heading for the tryline.

Barrett looked certain to score a marvellous try – only to be hauled in by a last-ditch tackle – from that man Lockyer.

The Broncos struggled to make inroads against the eager Sharks defence early in the game and finally got on the board after 30 minutes through a Corey Parker penalty goal.

The Sharks looked certain to go to the break trailing by just 2-0 – but Israel Folau powered over from the last play of the half to extend the lead to 6-0.

Lockyer scored early in the second half, charging onto a pass from fullback Josh Hoffman, before the
Sharks struck back to make a game of it.

After sustained pressure, powerhouse centre Taulima Tautai plunged over, but halfback Tim Smith, who struggled all night, missed the conversion shot.

Winger Antonio Winterstein then sealed the win for the Broncos with a late try.

More minutes for Aiton.

Less stupid kicks from Smith.

More width and depth.

Less biased refereeing.

More fans bothering to turn up.

Less reliance on Gallen.

More getting the ball to Gards and Gordon.

Less rain.

More
beer.

Less off-field politics.

.... and that is more or less it.

Couldn't agree more. Another quality post from fitz. I'm really happy for Gards. I was really giving him high hopes on this forum before his debut and was asking for him to be put in the 1st grade team week after week. Is much improved over Stapelton. How good is it too see our fullback sniffing around behind the likes of Toops, Gal, TB, Smithy etc. Haven't seen that since Kearney.

Timmy was awful but you can't drop him for just one bad game
I think we need to stitch up the jerseys so part of the back rips off if its pulled on too hard, would have allowed us two tries
