On Trindall on the bench... If he's only a half or lock, do we need him there?
This isn't a get rid of Trindall thing, its just that if Blayke goes down you've got Cam. If you need a lock there's Willams, Toby, Dale... And a few more ... who are more appropriate options.

Trindall isn't a utility, and we've got plenty of forwards. I honestly don't think I could justify him on the bench over Metcalf or even that 7's bloke Miller.
Trindall can play lock if McInnes gives Blayke a spell. If McInnes has a great deal of involvement as a first receiver, which I am thinking he might, then Trindall likely is a better sub for him than Dale, Williams, Toby et al

So I think Trindall works well from that angle and then provides cover for 2/4 spine players (one of whom is an escalated chance of needing cover). McInnes covers 9 if Blayke got injured and again Trindall can help out there without too much disruption. Could also do 9 himself if he had to. And if WK had to go off I guess you can either use a Talakai, Wilton, Williams or probably even Trindall at centre while one of the centre/wing goes to fullback.

Metcalf also covers very well, can do 3 maybe 4 of the spine roles but probably less valuable as a 13 (Trindall is enough bigger for it to be relevant). Then Miller if he can cover anywhere in spine, probably better at hooker than Metcalf by the sound of things, is similarly very versatile. Maybe in direct competition for the back up role with Metcalf if we run 6 Moylan 7 Hynes 14 Trindall to start with. Could even see them alternating time at 18.

I think the versatility to cover halves and 9 but also be more competent at 13 where he is a better chance to get a run if there are no injuries makes Trindall the best fit.

BUT arguably of the three Trindall would longer term benefit most from being able to play 80 for the Jets as a half if he isn't able to get more than 10 minutes of NRL a week but is supposed to partner Hynes 2023.
Meanwhile I think Metcalf might be our best non-disruptive fullback cover so I'd probably be trying to get him playing 80 at fullback every week for Jets.
Other than a few 80 minutes stints in Jets to start the year to make sure he can cut it I don't think Miller would get as much from game play experience as the other two, being quite a bit older and experienced at high level (if different) football.
Metcalf I don't really care what he gets out of it anymore but valuable to us as fullback cover. If Miller looks good at fullback he can be Jets fullback and I don't care how Metcalf is used.

Where did you hear this? It is not true at all.
I thought I saw somewhere he can jump in at 6, or maybe saw him in a 6 in highlights?

I only heard it in Forums like this as in people saying he is specialist hooker only.. I know he was Player of year, in Q cup and best player in beaten side in GF. and would have thought that would mean he had some versatility. I havent seen anything suggesting he is training in other positions at the Sharks . Happy to see some other information regarding that such as why you think otherwise

I'm expecting McInnes to play 80. And I'm the same, I'd rather Trindall playing half for Newtown rather than be a limited minutes lock sub. He's past that now, and so are we with our depth.

Hope Tricky reads this, trains the house down and demands a spot in the halves... That'd sort things out nicely 🙂

Agreed mate.

It would be easier to decide if we didn't have Moylan or Trindall. If we didn't have Trindall, we'd be more then likely forced to go with the Moylan 6 Hynes 7 combo but if we didn't have MM I'd feel more comfortable with Hynes 6, Trindall 7. Hard to know which way Fitz will go.

If MM gets the gig at 6 with Hynes at 7, I really hope it works but I am skeptical. To me Trindall at 7 and Hynes at 6 is the better combination

Yeah Hynes just looks , and gives the feel of a genuine 6 - to burden him with the running of the team at 7 concerns me .

A genuine 7 like tricky looks the way to go for mine but hints here and there from the coach about Moylan suggest that’s the way he will go ..

McInnes likely will play 80 most weeks, may not all be at 13 though. Was saying Trindall could fill into 13 if McInnes played 9 for a bit.
Or maybe could just be straight Trindall for Blayke.

The 7 isn't the only one allowed to do anything. Do you think Cam Smith just kept his gob shut and let Brodie Croft run the show?
Besides, Sharks fans are quite confident that directing the team around is unimportant and literally any idiot could do it anyway.

Based on the games I saw I would guess Cam Murray played around 60 mins on average most weeks last year.

If we want McInnes to bring similar energy and leg speed I wouldn't be expecting him to play 80 each week.

I thought he used to mostly play 80, but you could be right that will come down a bit for this season especially if we do use him to so some first receiver.

Here's some stats for comparable sorts of players (all stats average) (GPP general play passes)
Radley 24 GPP 34 tackles 64 mins
Jurbo 15 GPP 35 tackles 76 mins
Yeo 14 GPP 30 tackles 66 mins
Jackson 12 GPP 44 tackles 74 mins
Peachey 11 GPP 19 tackles 53 mins
Brown 10 GPP 27 tackles 58 mins
Murray 9 GPP 34 tackles 62 mins
Tevaga 7 GPP 29 tackles 45 mins
Cheese 6 GPP 24 tackles 56 mins

This is just Fox stats for locks, not accounting at all for anything like playing in different positions or anything.
They are just stats.
THEY MEAN NOTHING.

I knew Radley was great at it but that is way more than I expected, pretty impressive work rate.

I do like the idea of playing off the 9 through the middle third - but this is much easier to accomplish with Cameron Smith in the team with the multiple threat he provided as a great player .

I do hope Brailey can advance his game to a genuine play making role taking pressure off the halves and creating indecision in the defense with his ability to run / pass and even kick .

It comes back to how we feel about Moylan / Hynes as the combination and whether Tricky is given the responsibility to split that pair , especially factoring in the inevitable Moylan injuries.

Time will tell ..

I’ve been wondering how Berrell might go at 13. McInnes would be the perfect teacher. Watched a few of Berrells highlights and he’s in at first receiver either running or passing. Wouldn’t be worried carrying him on the bench as a back up hooker/running forward

Yeah. That's where he played much of his footy up until 2020. He had a similar role to how Trindall played vs Souths/Dragons last year or how Ben Hunt played in Origin 1, 2020. Technically playing "lock" but playing as an extra ball-player. It works because he can tackle better than most halves.

I just think you can play competitive football without a Chad type at 7, kind of funny people might think we need that in the team now after it was disparaged relentlessly when it was coming from Chad.

You just need a handful of players in the middle who understand what is going on, and how their role fits into it.

Someone does need to make calls on what kinds of sets we are going to do to try and execute the game plan.
I am thinking maybe McInnes might play a big role in that, but it could easily be the likes of Moylan or Graham even.
Then players just need to know what their role is within the game plan, and what their role is within the set that has been called.

If game plan includes trying to get to a certain attacking point late in set but directing runners towards a certain opposition half early set then Hynes, Moylan, McInnes and Brailey should all be capable of roughly working towards that. Works a bit easier for Hynes if his role is playing 'right half' rather than 'first receiver'. But the players in general having a good grasp of what was going on makes it easier for them too, which some players are better at than others.

If I'm playing prop and I know we want to work towards a certain part of the field I shouldn't need my half to try and force that.
Works better for some than others of course. Gal could always be relied on for the hitup where he was expected to go, Fifita was much more damaging but a lot of his crabbing runs probably threw off what the rest of the team wanted to do next play. When he was damaging it was worth it though, these days he has all the disruption with much less of the positive side of it.

Now general play kicking on the other hand... I do have a big concern over how that looks with Moylan Hynes combo but hey, make enough meters and you won't need many deep kicks...

I get that. Trindall on for Blayke, into lock or hooker, puts us back where we started though.

In this scenario Trindall is in a forwards/hookers spot on the bench. Do we then also carry a utility to cover backline injury or HIAs, or go without? This is the problem for mine. I think the way forward is one true utility and three forwards on your bench... Though with our Swiss army team we could go four forwards, which would be equally awesome as we'd get to see more of the likes of Hunt and Pele and pound teams into submission like in the good old days.

What are your thoughts on Trindall as a lock/hooker longer term ( at least until Mozza get hurt or punted) Burgo?

Talakai/Wilton can fill in centre, Tracey can play wing or fullback if needed.
Any utility you have that can cover all of spine probably isn’t gunna be as good as a forward so do you want the most versatile utility possible, or one that also jump in forwards if no injuries occur to spine/backs.

At the end of the day the amount of talent in different players is a factor too obviously.

It's just made me wonder for a while, if we don't pick Trindall as our starting half with Hynes, pick Hynes as our halfback with Moylan 5/8 who would be our major long range kicker & our convertor with our tries? If Hynes grew up in that major role then fair enough but if he never grew up as his teams major long kicker then who would?

I get what you're saying, but out on the field you need your halves playing that "general" role. They need to be directing the team and analysing the oppositions reaction in defence while organising the next play.

The team needs structure on the field, and unfortunately if you don't have a half directing the team, then you will have 13 players on the field doing their own thing.

Tracey can also play in the halves in a pinch, as can Wade. Dale can cover lock. Nicho could move to fullback... We've got the players in the run on squad to cover those positions. Are we better with Trindall into hooker and Cam at lock? Or say Cam at hooker and Dale at lock to bring on a bopper into the front row? I'm leaving towards the latter

Yeah, I think even with 'eyes up footy'you need someone keeping track of things and taking some charge
