Leuluai is gone

Salford City Reds have completed the signing of New Zealand prop Phillip Leuluai from Cronulla Sharks.

The 30-year-old will move to The Willows with immediate effect and is expected to join up with the rest of the squad early next week.

He should therefore be available for the Reds' crunch relegation clash with Hull Kingston Rovers next Friday.

Terms were agreed between the clubs before last Friday's Super League transfer deadline but the club was waiting for completion of the signing before making the announcement.

Leuluai made his debut for the Sharks in 2005, a season in which he was named rookie of the year.

But will young Eddie financially benefit from six weeks worth of freed up funds?

Leuluai boys gear up for showdown

FIRMLY FOCUSED: Phil Leuluai

STRONG family ties go on hold in Jacksonville on Saturday when Salford pack ace Phil Leuluai squares up to his nephew, Leeds star Kylie.

The two big, tough front-row enforcers will be going head to head at Hodges Stadium, on the University of Florida's campus.

Phil's immense popularity with the Salford fans is matched by Kylie's appreciation among the Headingley faithful.

They are a pair of gentle giants off the field and went head to head in the 2000 World Cup when Phil was playing for Samoa and Kylie went into battle for the New Zealand Maoris.

Phil has the greatest respect for his nephew, who helped Leeds to a Grand Final crowning at Old Trafford last season.

Capture

He told M.E.N. Sport: "Kylie is very solid, he is a powerful player, he's very strong, he can hit and it was good to meet up with him again the other day."

Phil is looking forward with relish to the Super League season. He has been joined at the Willows this term by another good mate - Willie Talau - and thinks his capture from a club of St Helens' stature is quite a coup for the Reds.

Phil added: "Willie is hungrier than ever for success. He has settled in quickly and is determined to go well. He is possibly still one of the best and most consistent centres in Super League.

"His experience could be invaluable as the season unfolds. Willie has told me he is really excited about the new challenge facing him. He is a quality centre and I think his style of play will greatly strengthen our second phase.

"He has good feet and very good hands. He is also a winner who is used to playing in the really big games."

Phil feels Salford have recruited well. He said: "We have a very good mixture running through the entire squad.

"We certainly have strong competition for places right across the park, this is good, it's also vital.

"Our pack will certainly be big. Luke Swain has joined us from Australia, he's a forward with a good work rate. Ray Cashmere, who has also come in from the NRL, is another forward who falls under the same bracket. I honestly feel we can push hard for a top-eight finish.

"Don't forget also the rich crop of young talent coming through at Salford. These kids are exciting. They too want to show what they can do at the highest level and they are certainly among the best in the game.

I would say the future of the club is in very safe hands when you stop and study the level of talent."

Slipped

Phil's two sons - Trey, 13, and 11-year-old Tyler - play local amateur rugby league. As a touchline spectator, Phil feels talent is certainly on Salford's doorstep.

He added: "I have heard the stories how Adrian Morley and Denis Betts slipped through the net as youngsters but believe me, the talent is out there at junior level because I see it for myself."

Turning his attentions back to Super League, Phil stressed: "Personally speaking, I would like to be involved in play-off footy again. The last time I was there was during my time at Cronulla.

"You can't beat these kind of games - they are awesome and as a player you want to be part of them.

"This is the aim for Salford this time and I just want to do all I can to help the club be as successful as they possibly can." Phil's team-mate Luke Adamson firmly believes Reds could upset the odds this season. He said: `'I think a few people will be surprised by just how strong the squad is.

"Normally it's tough for a club coming up into Super League but we have had more time to prepare.

"We have made some great signings, we are definitely stronger than ever. I can't wait to get into Leeds and then gear up for the season.

"I feel good, I always enjoy Jacksonville and I have lost quite a bit of weight. I feel sharper and it's all about making the most of a chance when it comes your way."

Leeds' big signing Aussie hooker Danny Buderas travelled to Jacksonville with his new team-mates but will not play. He is still recovering from a bicep injury but hopes to up and running by next month.

Buderas said: "I have come over to familiarise myself with my new team-mates. I look forward to the new Super League campaign and hopefully I will be out there pretty soon. I am still in rehab but it's going well."

Leeds only arrived in Jacksonville late Monday. Salford meanwhile, stay on for another week of hard graft hoping, of course for better weather after this week's downpours.
