Arguably our strongest line up of the year on current form. Just missing Katoa.

CT taking out Dally Ms
Tracey has consistently been a top performer for us recently. If we were to win chances are he’s had a good game, still, a little known winger probably unlikely to get much fanfare unless he really goes off

Was talking about Chad (just having a bit of a joke). Agree with your comments on Tracey though.

disgusting having Chad as first drop reserve

on the other hand make Hannay a life member - finally the turd is dropped. if last weeks performance wasn't gunna do it nothing was. must be the first time in 6 years or so he has been sat down for a game, previously out selected by Sir Robson. and he is definitely dropped cause we won last week so this wasn't purely about season 2022 planning

even if the halves don't click this week at least it's something different to watch and look forward to and is about looking towards the future. Titans must feel jipped not getting to line up against the elite game managing half back. SJ can kick it backwards over his head as a 5th tackle option I don't give a **** at least it's not Chads settling fullback finder

nice to also have a proper winger back in the team, that will make a difference. at least on one side of the field

things are looking up

but if Moylan or SJ pull a hammy pre game I am going to be triggered beyond belief

I can’t agree, I think Chad missing is mostly if not all about possible pairings for next season, not sure if you heard Hannay in the presser last week but when talk come up about Chad or the drop goal which clinched the game Hannay pretty much spoke glowingly of Chad.

Using words or phrases like ‘in those moments he’s the guy we go to, had works hard on his craft’

I didn’t see him being sat out this week, possibly in a few weeks but not yet, it’ll be interesting to see if Moylan or SJ are a late scratching for this Friday, does Chad leap frog Tricky or does his come in & start from the bench.

He was the guy they went to
He probably does work hard on things
Don’t think Hannay went too over the top with the glowing complements there...

Hannay should have used past tense to make it clearer for everyone

Hannay basically confirms Chad wasn’t playing up to a standard and that Trindall is pushing for the starting spot. He’s been dropped

Josh Hannay has handed off-contract stars Matt Moylan and Shaun Johnson the keys to the Cronulla castle.

In his most significant call so far as caretaker Cronulla coach, Hannay’s new-look halves pairing comes at the expense of premiership-winner Chad Townsend.

With one eye on form and the other on the future, Hannay has named Johnson at halfback to partner five-eighth Moylan ahead of Cronulla’s clash with the Gold Coast at Coffs Harbour on Sunday.

On the comeback trail from two weeks out with a hamstring injury, Johnson will play his 200th NRL game on Sunday.

In a new-looking Sharks team, winger Ronaldo Mulitalo, centre Jesse Ramien, forwards Siosifa Talakai and Andrew Fifita will all be named to return from the sidelines to tackle the top-eight Titans.

Both Johnson and Moylan are off-contract at the Sharks with incoming coach Craig Fitzgibbon declaring publicly he’s interested in working with the two run-threats as his halves combination in 2022.

The pair have played together in the halves on only three occasions since 2019, winning two of three matches.

Notably, their most recent partnership conjured a 30-18 win over the Titans in 2020.

The omission of Townsend is a significant call by Hannay.

A straight-shooter, Hannay has quickly proven he isn’t afraid to make a tough decision considering it was the Sharks halfback who landed the winning field-goal in golden-point extra time against the Dragons last Friday night.

Townsend has also produced 13 try assists — the most of any player in attack at the Sharks this season.

However, Hannay said he wanted more from his playmakers than what has been produced in recent weeks.

“Halves is one part of our squad we’ve got good depth and that includes Braydon Trindall, who is pushing for his shot every week, Shaun (Johnson), Matt Moylan and even Connor Tracey could slot in,’’ Hannay said.

“It’s not a position that we have to keep pushing ahead with, if someone isn’t hitting the marks that we’ve set.

“Chad’s been okay, he hit the winning field-goal last week.

“But with Shaun available, I think it’s an opportunity to make sure we hit the marks that I want our halves to reach and also get Shaun and Matt together.

“Because despite their level of class, it’s a combination that hasn’t really had a run of opportunity with just three games together.

“It’s probably a combination that needs to be delved into deeper for us.’’

Townsend’s omission has also eventuated after he announced a three-year deal to join the Cowboys last month.

However, Hannay said the decision had nothing to do with trying to force Townsend out of the club immediately.

“No - it’s about wanting everyone to be at their best and also hopefully answer some unknowns for us around Moylan and Johnson - which is also quite exciting,’’ Hannay said.

I'm excited. Imagine if these two click as a combo? They would be close to the best halves pairing in the comp. Up there with Cleary and Luai.

at this point I'm not fussed why Chad was put on the reserves bench - it's the correct call regardless all things considered

and hey who knows it might be the rocket Chad has needed. no player should be untouchable

He actually said "he's the guy we're always going to go to in those moments"

I agree - even if the others guys falter or (more likely) get injured, it gives him a rocket. You can't be coughing up cheap possession 4 times in a game.
