You think anyone else was offering Nicho the starting no.7 role?
I get you pay good money for proven performers, but you'll do better if you can identify and develop talent in a role like we're doing with Nicho.
I mean, look at our side now.
Ex-garbologist Talakai to centre from 2nd rower. Killing it.
No-legs Moylan into the 6. Killing it (maybe that's cheating a bit, but he had been pushed into fullback).
The-least-good-Macca McInness to lock from hooker. Killing it.
El Nicho at 7 from fullback. Killing it... and only getting better.
Ten-minute Trindall to NSW Cup from first grade benchwarmer. Still standing after a TKO... ;)
You missed...

- William "No NRL contract at 21" Kennedy
- Braden "2 NRL games at age 24" Hamline-Uele
- Royce "1 NRL game at age 24" Hunt
- Toby "0 NRL games at age 24" Rudolf

I was going for positional switches we jagged, but that's a decent list of other no-hopers we've turned into starters

Tbf most of those can't really be called out-of-the-box positional switches though. Nicho had played 3 full seasons in the halves in Cup, Sifa had played centre all his life prior to NRL, and McInnes was signed to play 13.

None are on the level of "let's throw Brett Kearney in to fullback to see what he can do and... oh wow, he might be our best player".

I still feel pretty confident no-one else would have signed them for those positions though. Nicho as a fullback... maaaybe.

I don't remember too many left-field positional switches ever happening tbh. There are a lot of guys who move from the backs to the forwards as they get older (Lewis, Wiki, Soliola, Lawrence), guys who played a utility role for a few seasons before they got their preferred spot (Hunt, Buderus, Cronk, Nicho), or halves who became hookers (Cam Smith, Corey Hughes, Ennis). Outside of that I can't think of too many guys who moved to a significantly different position and were successful. Wade Graham and Jack Wighton are the only ones I can think of.

People always say that Lockyer moving to 6 was a big one. That's not true though. He had always played 6 coming through junior and rep teams and actually played there for a lot of his first two seasons. I think it was more a case of him not being ready at 19 to be a full time NRL half, so they found another spot for him to play and always knew the option was there for him to move back to 6 full time.

Yeah fair call on Sifa or on Nicho as a 7- but I think there was some competition for Nicho's signature as a fb, and McInnes was a NSW origin-camp player as a 13, so I'm sure there were other teams keen.

Has there been a more inexperienced player to win the dally m? Greg Alexander won it in his second full year, probably beats him, but who’s next? Nicho?
