the vikings have only got themselves to blame. 5 turnovers or whatever it was beat them, not the officials

Are some teams just destined for heartbreak each season?
by David Wiseman
"The Roar" blog
29-01-2010

There are losses, and then there is what happened to the Minnesota Vikings in last weekend’s NFC Championship Game. Vikings fans thought 1998 was horrible, but this puts that to shame.

In 1998, Vikings’ kicker Morten Anderson missed a field goal which would have clinched the game — at least then they got to kick.

This time the Vikings kicker didn’t even get onto the field because Brett Favre was picked off throwing a pass he didn’t need to throw.

The game went into overtime, the Vikings lost the toss, and they didn’t touch the ball again. Although one thinks that had they won the toss they still would have found a way to throw it away.

It raises the question – are some teams destined for heartbreak?

No matter what the sport, you see examples of this, be it the Cronulla Sharks, Western Bulldogs or Chicago Cubs. Why are there some teams that just don’t know how to win?

Often it is the self-belief, or lack thereof, which is the biggest stumbling block. And when the dam breaks, it does so in a big way. This happened with the Queensland Bulls, Sydney Kings and Boston Red Sox.

To be a fan of one of these down-on-its-luck clubs isn’t easy. You are conditioned to disappointment and coming short, but you allow yourselves to think there is something different about them this year.

You start to hope, and with that comes expectation and excitement. Come the playoffs, an all too predictable and familiar feeling comes back. It all unravels.

And while it’s a different year, it’s the same result.

You don’t need to look any further than St George or St Kilda fans to see this. They would still be feeling the pain of their September fadeouts.

Maybe it would be better for your well-being if you weren’t so connected to the team, but to quote Brokeback Mountain: “I can’t quit you”.

The year it all clicks is the year all the pain and agony becomes worth it. The Sydney Swans fans of 2005, the West Tigers fans of 2005 and the Philadelphia Philles fans of 2008.

As a sports fan, you tie yourself to the fortunes of your team. You allow them to take you on an emotional roller-coaster and there is nothing you can do about it.

What can’t kill you will make you stronger.

Then again, you could always be boring and support Manchester United, the New York Yankees, or the Los Angeles Lakers.

Super Bowl XLIV (That's 44 if you are Roman Numeral Illiterate!)

Well, here we go guys, who's excited?!

SuperBowl XLIV (why do they write it in Roman Numerals anyway?) is just about here with Drew Brees' New Orleans Saints taking on Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts in Miami, Florida. The game is live on ONE HD on Moday 8th February at 1000 hrs.

Who is going to take it out guys? I have to say I would love to see the Saints win their first title but unfortunately I think the Colts just look too damn good. Peyton Manning was on fire and shot the lights out against the Jets in the AFC Championship, whilst the Saints benefitted from a Favre led Vikings implosion in the NFC.

Hey Mods/Admins - how about a bit of sports betting on this game? Usual deal, margins etc, just for a bit of fun.

By the way, I was just watching "NFL Game Day" on ONE where they had highlights of both the NFC and AFC Championship games. If anyone else was watching, did you see the bit at the end of the Saints game where they had just kicked the field goal in extra time to win the game? The Saints mascot, which looked like some kind of bloodhound, ran onto the field and went running towards one of the Saints players to hug him. Unfortunately for the mascot, the player was sprinting towards his team-mates, didn't see the mascot and ran straight into him, ironing him out flat! Quite hilarious!

It's always funny when stuff happens to mascots, I don't know why but it's a scientific fact. :cheers

I do not want the saints to win, I might be the only person in the world who gets a sick feeling in their stomach with the thought of Saints winning the superbowl. I don't like the team, the player, the coaches and hell even throw the management in there too.

I hope the Saints get up for the reason that they haven't won a SB yet. Also because some of my favorite players from my favorite college football team Ohio State, play for the Saints in Malcolm Jenkins and Will Smith. Unfortunately, I think that Peyton will be too good for the Saints D and Brees won't be able to out do Peyton. First time in years that the Superbowl is going to be a pass friendly game.

Hopefully she's a high scoring, vertical scoring fest. Something like the Packs v Cards game.

Spewin but, don't get out of school till 2.00 so will have to race home to try and catch the end.

Yeah mate, I agree about Brees not being quite in the same class as Manning. I think for the Saints to win it, alot will be riding on Bush having a big game.:cheers

It depends on wether the Saints impressive pass rush can get to Manning very quickly and if Bush/Bell/Thomas can run the ball well consistently throughout the game. Also a big special teams play from Bush won't hurt.

For sure, some big kick returns will certainly help!:good:

They got Roby to help out in that department too-Boy's got legs.

I think Peyton wins this one. There is hardly a throw that this bloke can't make and he has ice running through his veins. The experience of being on the big stage before will help too.

But definitely can't count the Saints out. They've got a lot of self belief and a lot of talent to back it up. Should be a great game.

As a Bears fan, every year I hope that someone doesn't return the opening kick-off for a TD as I want to keep Hester's return even more special. But I'm a massive Reggie Bush fan, everyone was down on him that he never lived up to his potential but he has turned into a solid RB for the Saints. Still not LT2 (there you go dier) talent as he was projected to be, but very helpful none the less.

I just can't wait to see the typical underdog vs the more experienced/favored team in the biggest game of them all. Mouth watering stuff to say the least.

Well, it's half-time in the Superbowl and the Colts are up 10-6 but the Saints owned the second quarter where they dominated possession but were only able to score two FG's due to some great Colts goal-line defence. It's turning into a real arm wrestle, which no-one really expected. Everyone was predicting a high scoring game but so far it hasn't eventuated, although both QB's are having a great game.

By the way, The Who played at half-time and put on a good show, I reckon, considering you only get, like, ten minutes to hit top gear. Commentators on ONE weren't so impressed with them though!

Second half about to get underway...GO THE SAINTS! (That just feels wrong!):cheers

On-side kick to start off the second. Insanely ballsy. I like it! Hang in there, NOLA!

Completely choked at the end there! Threw an intercept and then couldn't get the ball into the end zone from inside 10 yards with four attempts. Unheard of for Manning in the regular season.

Good to see the Saints win! Maybe 2010 is the year of the "Forty Year Old Virgins":good:
