I can't see a guy like Burgess being convinced to stay in the NRL under the proviso that he swaps from the premiers to the wooden spooners, even if it meant an extra 150k per year

I think the marquee allowance would be more than 150k. Say for him it's 400k. If what you say happened then there's nothing lost, he was going to leave anyway.

They could just do what the A league do and allow each club to have one player off the books. If a club can afford to pay one player stupid money, then good luck to them. One player per team on ridiculous money would not be enough to make the competition too lop-sided. The nrl should have no part in paying players for certain teams "at their discretion".

I reckon there'd be too much ego with league players for that to work, with the A League marquee player its generally a foreign star that gets paid the big dollars and the local players are just happy to be in the same team as them.

Why not just increase the cap. Then each club can split the money up however they want. they can pay one person 1.5 mil and another 80K completely up to them

Do you think that its due to weak character on Dave Smiths part? He just doesn't seem to have the balls or the… that leadership quality I'm not sure how to describe it. He doesn't stamp his authority on anything, and when he does, its usually the wrong thing to do. I think the commission are also to blame to try and justify their jobs and pay packets. They have to look like they're changing things and working new rules in when its not needed.

David Gallop got a lot of **** in his days but honestly the guy knew how to run a sport, look what he is doing for the A-leauge.

Yeah Smith is a typical banker, throw enough money at a nothing problem and it will eventually be fixed, don't give any money to the real problems to please the shareholders.

Gallop was a massive loss, but in saying that, I'm not 100% sure how well he would have handled the ASADA saga. In hindsight, Smith's stepping back becuase he was new to the job did help us.

I doubt most of the stuff we are concerned with is even handled by Dave Smith. I think Greenberg handles most of the footy matters.

dave smith is not good for the nrls future, too many knee jerk reactions. begging players to stay is pathetic. let them go, youll lose more fans bending rules for certain clubs all the time then youll attract keeping a pommy guy with a hot mum
