Kangaroos skipper Cameron Smith has questioned the fairness of NRL boss David Smith's discretionary power to top up the contracts of stars thinking of leaving the sport.
The ARL commission head said this week he would have exercised the self-appointed privilege for the first time if there was a chance it would have kept Jarryd Hayne – who has left to pursue a career in the NFL – in the competition.
"The game needs to look at ways to keep our best players – I'm not too sure whether this whole discretionary, marquee player allowance thing is the go … where Dave Smith can pick where he throws money at players. Who picks and chooses that? Who says 'this bloke gets cash', where 'he can't'," Smith told Fairfax Media in Brisbane, where he is preparing for the coming Four Nations.
Three of the players recently judged among the top 12 in the world have left since the end of the NRL season, an unprecedented exodus that the Melbourne Storm rake said concerned him greatly.

It's a common sense observation though.
It's pretty clear that this is unworkable and open to manipulation. It's a knee-jerk reaction driven by in tabloid hysteria.
Every first grade footballer is going to be looking for an offer from another sport now. Next we'll need to give George Rose a marque allowance to stop him defecting to sumo wrestling.
If they want to leave for more money then go. And good luck to them, but paying them more will just cost us more in ticket prices and merchandise because the nrl isn't in the business of just giving money away.
The game will go on.

The nrl already play favourites so I doubt they'd be trying to get sbw and burgess etc to play for us or canberra or the tigers.I don't have a problem with it. But if a 'marquee' player is going to get paid 25-50% more by the NRL then they should have to go and play for one of the bottom clubs. If they don't like it, **** off. No way a healthy club should be getting a leg up.

And imagine the player agents manipulating it for a bit of extra coin for themselvesAlso, in situations like Hayne trying to crack NFL, if a player is leaving to test themselves as opposed to the coin, they arent going to stay for the money. Also, who decides which player is worth the allowance? And whats to stop a player bluffing about leaving the game to simply grab an extra few hundred grand a year? If the top players don't think they can live comfortably and support their family when they most likely earn 800k plus a year than they are doing something wrong.

Yeah I mean, souths were helped along nicely to win a comp, and if the nrl just say **** it and go give burgess an extra 200k and gets to stay at souths, how is that not basically cheating and playing even bigger favourites?
Yeah agree. Every now and then you make some sense.
Seriously though, if it was used correctly it could be a bit like the bottom clubs in the AFL getting higher draft picks. Could be a good thing if done properly.
