Newtown's quest for a place in the 2005 VB Premier League grand final has ended with a hard-fought 24-14 loss to Parramatta, in the second preliminary final played at Telstra Stadium on Sunday. The final score-line doesn't fully reflect just how close this elimination match really was, with a number of lineball refereeing decisions that had an influence on the final outcome.

<EDITED>

On a day when all the forwards tried hard, Newtown's best were Kevin Kingston, Sam Isemonger, Tommy Gemmell and Luke Harlen.

<EDITED>

At the end of what has been Newtown's best-ever season in the strong VB Premier League competition, coach Colin Murphy praised his players for their tremendous personal contributions and their professionalism during the joint-venture between the Newtown and Cronulla-Sutherland clubs. Murphy also thanked the many Newtown supporters who had turned out in such strong numbers at all three of the Jets' finals appearances, and who had also contributed to the team's excellent record in home games at Henson Park in 2005.

Following an incident in a Sydney hotel last Saturday evening two Sharks contracted players have been severely reprimanded and fined.

After extensive investigations by the Sharks club, which included the viewing of security video and the interviewing of hotel management and staff, Darren Mapp has been fined a substantial amount for behaviour seen by the Sharks club as being totally unacceptable.

A second player, Luke Harlen, has been fined a lesser amount for minor indiscretions at the same hotel.

These were the only two incidents reported by management which involved Sharks players with several senior players in fact complimented by management and staff of the hotel in question for their cooperation. No official complaint was lodged by the hotel in relation to the reported incidents.

Low down

Sharks are most likely to release Hutch, Hilder, Harlen and Vagana.

They are in the midst of upgrading Gallen's contract, trying to re-sign Thompson for 2 more years and about to upgrade Tony Caines as well.

Covell is a dead set spasa not to mention his lack of speed and poor defensive positioning, half up and half back.

Luke Harlen is another example on good money to play premier league???? Then when and if he leaves we will say what happened?

We need to also look long term as well as current, something we haven't done for a lot of years.

Bird will be missed, but luckily second row is where we do have depth.

Ciraldo, Simmons, Harlen to name a couple.

Tigers snap up forward talent

WESTS Tigers have boosted their forward depth for 2007 by securing the services of a talented batch of youngsters from the NSWRL Premier League competition and country scene.

Promising St George-Illawarra second-rower Tom Haberecht has signed a one-year-deal with the Tigers and joins Cronulla forward Luke Harlen, Parramatta prop Peter Lewis and Illawarra centre/second rower Ramone Filipine as new recruits for the joint venture club.

Haberecht, 21, is a talented second-rower who can also play in the front-row. A Canterbury junior, Haberecht played in the premiership winning Jersey Flegg side for St George-Illawarra last season alongside current Wests Tigers back Ben Jeffery.

“Tom is a wide running second-rower with a good offload and we are excited about having him on board,’’ said Wests Tigers Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell.

Harlen and Lewis have played first grade while Filipine - who hails from the University club - represented Illawarra at this year’s Country Championships.

Harlen lucks out again

THE Pride will be without Luke Harlen for at least six weeks after the barnstorming forward was ruled out with a knee injury.

Harlen will have an arthroscopy on his degenerative right knee, although Pride coach Andrew Dunemann said there was uncertainty whether that alone would help much.

"It looks like he may need surgery," Dunemann said.

"He was struggling on the weekend out there."

Dunemann said Harlen had consulted doctors earlier this year who had picked up a degenerative problem.

A week off was unlikely to improve things for the former Wests Tigers and Cronulla forward, and Dunemann was unsure how much relief the arthroscope could provide given his lack of cartilage.

"He’s going to be out a minimum of six weeks, I’d imagine," Dunemann said.

The Pride will not be without starch in the forwards for Sunday’s crunch match against Brisbane Norths though, with Alex Starmer and Manase Manuokafoa starting in the front row.

Starmer impressed last week, although his time on the field was limited by a nasty head cut.

Atherton forward Greg Byrnes, who, like Harlen, played for the Cowboys in the NRL last season after impressing for the Pride, remains in the Cairns District Rugby League.

Dunemann said while he had remained loyal early in the season to the players that got the job done for the Pride last year, other squad members deserved a chance when the starters’ form wavered.

"Those blokes that got a crack have taken it," he said.

"I was pretty loyal for the first four or five games but we just weren’t producing.

"At the end of the day, you’ve just got to win games."

Luke Millwood has retained the starting five-eighth’s position, although Tom Humble has been named on the bench, giving Dunemann a range of playmaking options.

"It gives us the option to give Roosy (Jason Roos) a rest as well," he said.

James Tamou has been called up by the Cowboys for Friday’s match at Parramatta, with Dunemann thrilled to see the young forward rewarded.

No Harlen in the back row against Wenty this week. I'd be surprised if Wright doesn't play in the centres.
