Footy stars sign with Mustangs

Footy stars sign with Mustangs
Jamie Gallagher
2nd December 2010

THE Murwillumbah Mustangs yesterday confirmed their biggest coup to date, securing the services of rugby league superstars and home-town heroes Luke Covell and Damien Quinn for the 2011 NRRRL season.

Rumours had been rife throughout the region since the pair retired from top-flight football, but the 29-year-olds finally put pen to paper at Stan Sercombe Oval on Tuesday night much to the delight of coach Troy McLean.

“Everyone’s pretty thrilled about it all,” McLean said.

“The town’s buzzing and there’s plenty of enthusiasm around the club. I must admit I’m excited too. It’s going to be a big year for the Mustangs.”

Winger Covell retired from the NRL at the end of the 2010 season, after six stellar years with the Cronulla Sharks. The goal-kicking winger played more than 150 NRL games and scored in excess of 1000 points, picking up Dally M, Country Origin and New Zealand honours along the way.

Five-eighth Quinn hung up his Super League boots earlier this year after guiding FC Lezignan to French Super League and Cup glory in 2010.

However, he will best be remembered in Europe for his four years (2006-09) with Welsh English Super League side, Celtic Crusaders.

There he became the first club player to play 100 games, picked up several Player of the Year awards and still holds the club pointscore record of 612.

“I’ve known them since they were juniors and it’s amazing we have them both on board for next season,” McLean said.

“We thought Luke would definitely be back but didn’t realise the pair had a pact to return together.

“There was a lot of hype about (Newcastle forward) Danny Wicks joining the competition last year but the signing of these two boys is far, far bigger.”

Where the headliners will play though may surprise some fans.

“Cov said to me, ‘Troy you’re not playing me at two or five,’ and honestly I wouldn’t do it to him,” McLean said.

“He’ll play in the back row, and as for Quinny, he’ll either lock the scrum or play six but he can play almost anywhere; very handy utility.”

Both recruits will continue training Tuesday nights with the squad at 6pm until Christmas, before knuckling down come the new year.

i dont think it is, terrific defender and a strong ball runner, his pace would be shown up in the middle of the park either.
but he has retired now so no point discussing it

Coaching camp for future NRL stars

Coaching camp for future NRL stars
Mitchell Craig
14th December 2010

FORTY-ONE of the best 17- and 18-year-old country rugby league players converged on the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre at Lennox Head for a weekend camp.

Gold Coast Titans trainer Fred Turner took the enthusiastic bunch through sprint sessions and pool work.

Retired Cronulla Sharks captain Luke Covell was a guest coach at Lake Ainsworth.

The camp was organised by the Country Rugby League coaching panel.

During the past five years, 30 players have been signed to National Rugby League clubs from the CRL Academy.

The program will continue over summer.

Trial games for the CRL team are set down against the Titans Under-16 and Under-18 squads at Cudgen and Coffs Harbour in February.

Former Shark A Gull For One-Off

Former Shark a Gull for one-off
Simon Crase
26th January 2011

EX-Cronulla Shark Luke Covell joined the Tannum Sands Seagulls for the CQID Reconciliation Carnival at the weekend through a connection with the current coach, and his love for footy hasn’t waned since his retirement from the professional ranks.

Just happy for the chance of a run, Covell’s motivation was simple in joining the Seagulls for a one-off.

“Getting out on the field, and playing a bit of footy and hopefully helping the local lads out,” he said.

Covell and Tannum Sands Seagulls coach Wes Hallam boarded together during their early days at Wests, and it was Hallam’s dapper dress sense that caught the future Sharks player attention, along with future Gold Coast Titan Anthony Lafranchi’s.

“I remember when we’d go out for a beer together; he’d have the button-up collared shirt, the stonewash jeans and the old school brown leather Colorados. We’d look at him and shake our head and think ‘Where’d this bloke come from?’” he said.

Although his fashion attire may be something Covell chuckles about, the former interntational representative has no doubt Hallam is suited down to the ground for coaching.

“He’s always asking questions of people he’s been involved with in his career to find out as much knowledge as he can, he’s very passionate about it,” Covell said.

Speaking about his NRL career, Covell said being the NRL pointscorer in 2008 was an honour, especially as it took the accolade off a star in his team, and other significant moments included playing at the highest level.

“It was good to take the mantle off Hazem (al Masri) who’d had it for so long, and to finally do it, you take it,” he said.

“You always remember your debut, which was good, and a country origin game and test for New Zealand.

“Our preliminary final against Melbourne in 2008, we didn’t come away with the cash, but it was probably the biggest crowd I played in front of.”

Retiring at the completion of the 2010 NRL season, Covell said getting itchy feet was to be expected at this time of the year, as league talk begins to ramp up.

“You’re starting to see a bit more in the papers, so it’s an exciting time of the year,” he said

“I’ll always miss it but at the same time, I had my turn and it was time to move on,” Covell

When the time arrived to hang up his Sharks boots, it proved to be a moment you can never fully prepare for, according to the bloke who earned the nicknamed The Cooler.

“The blood, sweat and tears you put in over the years, for it all to come to and end it wasn’t that much fun,” Covell said.

“I had a good time and can’t complain about anything.

“I’ll follow the Sharks for the rest of my life and get to as many games as I can.”

Last year, the former Shark became the first player in the competition’s history to have the revolutionary LARS procedure to help expedite his recovery from a serious knee injury.

“When the injury happened, I knew I was going to retire at the end of the year, so I wouldn’t have been able to come back with the regular knee reconstruction,” he said.

After investigating a few options and talking to a physiotherapist, Covell took the decision to undergo the knife for the radical treatment, and was pleased with the result.

“Luckliy enough it all worked out; I was running just before three weeks and was back on the field within 12 weeks,” Covell said.

Chris Carnes, another of Hallam’s old mates, also lined up for the Seagulls during the carnival and hails from Wollongong.

“I played with Wes in 2004 and played a few rep games with him, he gave me a call and thought I’d come down for something different,” he said.

I think Murwillumbah play in the Group 1 comp, if so I'm going home the weekend of the match to watch the mighty Cougars play the Mustangs.

Covell will boost the Mustangs

Covell will boost the Mustangs

28th March 2011

FORMER Cronulla Sharks star Luke Covell made an impressive return to Northern Rivers rugby league yesterday in Ballina RSL Charity Shield pre-season action.

Former Sharks winger Covell played in the back row and bolstered a strong Murwillumbah Mustangs forward pack as his side went on to a big 30-0 win over the Mullumbimby Giants.

Murwillumbah will play Northern United in the final this Sunday at 3pm at Crozier Field in Lismore.

The Dirawongs trounced Lower Clarence 44-4.

Mustangs coach Troy McLean spoke glowingly of the contribution Covell made in his return to his junior club.

“Covell was good alongside Corey Maher in the back row,” McLean said.

“He’s going to be handy for us this season. He loved playing in the back row – he’s big and strong. The boys love having him in the team and he’ll be a sensation for us.”

The final on Sunday promises to be a beauty – the Mustangs are a strong defensive unit while the Dirawongs love to throw the ball around.

“Overall we played well,” Dirawongs co-coach Willie Hammond said.

“But sometimes we didn’t stick to our game plan and only tried to play what was in front of us.”

Maclean junior Jerry Byers ran in a brace of tries for the Dirawongs.

In the other play-off on Sunday, Grafton Rhinos will play Grafton Ghosts at 1.45pm.

In other games yesterday, Ghosts beat Casino 20-6, Rhinos prevailed over Evans Head 28-12 and Cudgen beat neighbours Tweed Coast 23-6.

Shark back as forward

THE great thing for fans of Murwillumbah Mustangs is that former NRL star and 2011 recruit Luke Covell says his knee feels fine.

THE great thing for fans of Murwillumbah Mustangs with the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League season kicking off this weekend, is that former NRL star and 2011 recruit Luke Covell says his knee feels fine.

Covell last year became the first NRL player to undergo revolutionary LARS treatment after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament playing for the Cronulla Sharks against Parramatta.

Covell knew the end of his professional football career was drawing near.

So the LARS treatment, which involved two industrial-strength synthetic fibres being inserted into his knee to act as his ACL ligament, was a way to quickly get him back on the football paddock to try to earn a new NRL contract.

Amazingly Covell did recover in time to play the end of the season.

His body was not quite up to the rigours of first-grade rugby league so he retired, but at least it was on his own terms.

Covell got the chance to say goodbye to his loyal Sharks fans.

Now all the former Sharks and Australian representative winger wants to do is play well for his junior club, the Mustangs.

And he wants to do this as a second-rower.

“You cop more elbows there than you do as a winger and I'm still getting used to it but that's where I want to play,” Covell said.

“The knee feels really good.

“I'm not running on it everyday like I did while at the Sharks because we only train twice a week at the Mustangs.

“I just need to manage it well.”

Covell boasts a rugby league career the envy of any park footballer.

He played a match for New Zealand during an eight-year stint in the NRL where he registered 153 games at the Wests Tigers and Cronulla.

In 2008, Covell was the Dally M top point scorer of the year after helping the Sharks make a preliminary final against Melbourne Storm.

But the modest 29-year-old is simply happy to be back in Murwillumbah – the town where he played junior football.

“I'm just fitting in to my new club at the moment,” he said.

“I'll throw my two bob in every now and then but I'll leave most of the talking up to Damien Quinn.

“Damien played some football (for Celtic Crusaders) in the English Super League and is better at explaining things, that's more his forte.

“It's good to be back in Murwillumbah; it's more relaxing than Sydney.”

Pre-season champions the Mustangs host traditional NRRRL battlers Kyogle Turkeys tomorrow at 2.45pm at Stan Sercombe Oval.

“It doesn't matter where Kyogle is on the table, they're always pretty tough in the forwards and tomorrow will be no different especially with it being the first round of the competition,” Mustangs coach Troy McLean said.
