It was a great result last night we finally had some luck go our way! Forwards were strong and we had some solid performers across the park. Dykes did well in his comeback game,he will only get better and our backrow were again pretty strong.
Now, at the risk of being negative, I want to bring to the attention of everyone something that I have been mentioning for a while now and that is the ball control of Paul Gallen. He was strong last night, busted tackles, defended well and set up a great try for Brett Kearney but he still made crucial errors at crucial times in crucial situations. Our first two handling errors came from Gallen, one in our 20 and another when we were on the attack with three tackles up our sleeve. And then, with 7 minutes remaining and us leading 20-16, he lost control of the ball while playing it, 20 metres out from our line putting Newcastle on the attack and giving them a chance of winning the game.
I am not trying to run a hate campaign against Paul Gallen, I think he is a terrific player and should be considered by the rep selectors for Origin but he just frustrates me with his hands.
Does anyone agree with me at all?

ive also noticed this with gallen. my mum thinks its just because he is in the play so much, that he makes more mistakes. someone who is in the play less will make more mistakes, she says. but i dont know - i think he is just prone to errors.

Covell's goal kicking hasn't just improved his defence has been spectacular, they say his offence isn't that great but jesus he makes up for it with his defence.
Also i heard today that the dragons are chasing beau Scott, not sure if its crap or not.

what greg pierce said to a fellow sharkfinatic:

1. Lance Thompson has NOT re-signed yet, and nothing is set in concrete. His manager is in Texas promoting a Mundine fight, and despite having been inundated with calls and messages from Sharks management is uncontactable at this stage. The situation however is that no one else is chasing him, and that Lance will probably stay, as we have made him a very large three year offer. This may not be finalised until late this week though. Whatever happens it is not for lack of trying that Thompson is not yet re-signed.

2. Nigel has NOT signed with the Rabbits yet. Nigel has promised that he will come and talk to Pierce before he signs, and this has not happened. However, the Sharks will not be matching the current offer he has recieved from Souths, (rumoured to be in the region of $350K a year) as we can't fit that under the cap. Nigel is welcome to enter into talks regarding what would have to be a much smaller contract, but it is more than likely that he will take the money at this stage of his career.

3. Covell is next on the block with his manager coming in tomorrow. Covell is going nowhere, though the Sharks aren't considering him a priority at this stage. Covell REALLY wants to stay, but what he gets offered is dependent on what we have to pay to others.

4. Beau Scott is polarising Cronulla fans. As it stands he is being chased by the Dragons and Titans, but will be made an offer by Cronulla at some stage.

5. We will not be signing Jamie Lyon. We contacted Lyon's management and made him an offer, but Lyon was asking $450K a year which Pierce, (and I concur) felt was excessive for a centre. In fact, under the salary cap we could either have Lyon and a premier league guy, or Lance Thompson and someone like Webster or Delaney. I think Thommo is by far the better option.

6. We are talking to Webster, Delaney and Millard. Our option is Webster, but the Titans have more money to spend, and his family lives on the Gold Coast. We can but offer.

7. Hutch will more than likely leave. At the moment, he is rated as our 4th prop, behind Ross, Douglas, and Stosic??? He is asking around $160K a year which is excessive for a fourth prop. If he gets a better offer somewhere else he is likely to take it as we won't be offering close to that.

8. Salary cap issues are paramount at the moment. A lot of the money we save from Bailey and Nigel is being given to Thompson, (as St George are paying most of his contract this year) and to Luke Douglas who had half the league chasing him. We are also budgeting to re-sign Gallen, as he will more than likely attract lots of interest.

9. Players who have expressed interest in coming to the Sharks should the worst happen and we lose Thompson, are Sione Faumaina, who killed us against the Warriors a few weeks back, and wait for it....

CRAIG FITZGIBBON!!!!! He's on the back end of his career, but he'd look good in a Sharks jersey. Be a great option if the worst happened.

luke covell is a great player and it would be a shame to let him go this season...he brings so much to the team and is a great assett......he would have to be one of the most improved players in the league defencively and attacking wise

Yes, he is a great defender, but he always comes up with handling errors. In semi finals you just can't do that. Did you notice that 2 mistakes cost Cronulla 10 points.

COVELL A SHARK THROUGH TO 2008
28.06.06 16:58

Winger Luke Covell has signed a new two year deal which will see him remain at the Sharks at least until the end of the 2008 season.

The Sharks goal-kicker who has been outstanding in 2006 with a success rate of 76 per cent, Covell has also been in tremendous form on the wing for the Sharks, with a feature of his play being his no-nonsense defense and his ability read a game and defuse dangerous situations on his own goal line.

In a career which included a stint at the Wests Tigers before he joined the Sharks, Covell has accumulated 452 points in 58 NRL games. He has scored 310 points in 36 first grade games for the Sharks, coming from 14 tries and 127 goals.

Covell has played all of the Sharks 14 games in the top grade so far this season.

Sharks CEO Greg Pierce announced the signing of Covell this afternoon (Wednesday).

“Luke has been very good for us on the wing and his goal kicking is an obviously another string to his bow,” Pierce said. “We are more than happy he has agreed to stay at the Sharks for a further two years.”

The Sharks are also moving quickly in an attempt to secure a number of off-contract players before the June 30 anti-tampering deadline and will then enter the player market in a bid to bolster their ranks for 2007 and beyond.

Beau Scott is the next priority signing. He's fast, he's strong, can bust tackles well for a youngster and he'll only get better with age. Has suspect handling and poor decision making sometimes but I reckon he'll overcome that. Different sport but years ago when Rod Marsh made his debut in cricket for Australia behind the stumps he was so bad that they called him Iron Gloves as he dropped so many catches. But he turned out to be one of the best keepers Australia has produced.
