The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs have signed former Broncos winger Leon Bott until the end of the 2008 season.

Bott, 20, is a product of Westfield Sports High in Sydney's west and played for the Australian Schoolboys rugby union team in 2003 and 2004.

Bott began his NRL career in a blaze of glory with the Broncos in 2005 and was subsequently named their Rookie of the Year.

Unfortunately 2006 was not the best of years for Bott: he injured his shoulder; was released from the Broncos; picked up by the Sharks for the rest of the season but played only one NRL game.

Bott came to the Bulldogs for the 2007 pre-season on a train-and-trial basis but medical staff discovered his shoulder was not stable and he required reconstructive surgery.

After going through extensive rehabilitation and one-on-one fitness sessions with Bulldogs trainers, Bott is close to returning to the field.

Bulldogs football manager Bradley Clyde said, "Leon has already experienced the highs and lows of professional sport in just a couple of years.

"We are excited by the prospect of a fully fit Leon Bott because of his raw speed and untapped potential. He certainly raised eyebrows when in only his first sprint session with the part-time squad he blew them away."

Bott to learn fate after hit on Hawke's grandson

Former Brisbane Broncos winger Leon Bott will find out on Friday whether he will be cited over a tackle in a Sydney club rugby match which left the grandson of former prime minister Bob Hawke needing life-saving surgery.

Randwick winger Dave Dillon was smashed by Bott as he waited to take a high kick in the 30th minute of Saturday's 41-13 win over Manly at Coogee Oval.

Bott was sin-binned for the tackle, which sparked a melee as Randwick players objected to it.

Dillon played out the match but was taken to hospital by his girlfriend on Tuesday and later had his ruptured spleen removed, Network Ten reported.

Dillon told the television network another hour without treatment could have been life-threatening.

Randwick complained about the tackle to the NSW Rugby Union, who have passed video of it on to the Shute Shield competition's citing commissioner.

The commissioner is expected to decide on any charge today but Bott would be free to play in Sunday's match against Gordon regardless of the ruling.

The former Brisbane, Cronulla and Bulldogs NRL player was named in the Manly rugby union side earlier this week.

A former Australian schoolboys representative in rugby union, Bott returned from league to the 15-man game with Manly this year.

Very late too, that's the kind of hit you give your most reviled colleague in school footy.
