Had hopes for Filiga because everyone was saying he's the next SBW.

I saw class in Mills though. Still wish that he'd not been thrown in at fullback on that fateful windy day.

You never know.
Wasn't that Albert Kelly?

in the Connor Tracey mold then?
Not at all. These two are not comparable.

Connor Tracey was never a good passer at any level. He was a run-first player who looked great in the halves in age level comps because he could run around people.

Kade’s passing game was pretty limited when he was 18, but it’s come a long way since then. He has a legitimate chance to play 6 in the NRL.

Tracey is comparable to Metcalf.

Adam Dykes had as good a passing gamer as any half I've seen so fingers crossed it's genetic.
It will be interesting to see how they use Dykes next year. If he is a bench utility and they want to give him time in the halves maybe he comes on for Brailey with Trindall moving to dummy half?

I haven't seen much of his short passing game but his cut out balls are a thing of absolute beauty.

Loads of options isn't there
We really don't even know if he is being looked at as a fullback or as a half - I'm thinking maybe half as the time off would help him bulk up a little for front line D.

Yeah he missed a year but so do many who get a serious injury like ACL, and loads of up and comers who were not playing NRL during COVID.
It's not ideal, but it's far from a disaster. Few at his age have sat beside the coach on game day so much.

As a half we could
  • Set him at 6 (beside Puru) in Cup and have his playing 80 in the role each week
  • Drip feed him NRL as a 17th/18th man - cover halves, probably play the awkward ballplayer 13 role late, cover FB or even centre if needed
  • Get as much NRL into him as we can by giving a go at winning the left centre position (Burton style transition)
Even do option 1 but with an option 2 every now and again (some games as 18th man, some games as 17 if we like the match up for only 3 forward bench).

Obviously inevitable injuries around the squad will impact things - fingers crossed we have a good run with injuries in 2024 (and beyond...)

Agree with all of that. I hadn’t considered the left centre option. My only hesitation with shifting the big fella is he is so good carting it up early in the set. His passing too but he can use that anywhere they put him.

Fingers crossed Dykes stays healthy.

Feels like we're putting a lot of eggs in his basket

Yeah it could be a consideration towards moving Talakai to forwards but coach needs to be sure he wants to do that for this pathway to open up. think if Fitz isn't sure he wants to move Talakai to forwards then he shouldn't do it.

But in another sense, none, because our eggs have no value to him (sorry @egg )

Now from a Sharks perspective something like starting him round one in the 1 or 6 jersey, that is counting some serious chickens before they hatch

We are, on average, very high on Dykes. I think the name, the transition to NSW Cup followed quickly by decent look in NRL (and throw in actually jumping excellent backup Miller for the backup role), and the the time in coaches box all contribute to him having a fair bit of excited interest from us fans.

Add to that he's effectively a new recruit for this year, we're all hoping (or maybe clutching at straws) he can be be a star (or better than average).
