Johnathon Thurston, its now or never!

Just wondering what people think about the Johnathan Thurston offer.

Cowboys to offer Thurston record $2.1m contract

NORTH Queensland will offer a take-it-or-leave-it $2.1 million contract to Johnathan Thurston this week in a last-ditch bid to stop rugby league's No.1 player walking out on the Cowboys and the NRL.

The development comes as Thurston's manager, Sam Ayoub, revealed the Test playmaker was considering quitting the code because of increasing concerns over the impact the NRL season was having on his body.

The Sunday Mail has learned Cowboys boss Peter Parr is set to offer Thurston the most lucrative deal in the club's 15-year history when the parties step up talks this week.

The three-year contract has a base value of $500,000 a season, plus an additional $200,000 in third-party sponsorships that Parr hopes will keep Thurston in Townsville until the end of 2013.

Thurston has received a $1.1 million offer from Japanese rugby union, meaning the Maroons maestro will sacrifice about $400,000 annually if he opts to remain in the NRL.

But Parr insists the Cowboys do not possess the fiscal muscle to engage in a bidding war with rugby.

"I've told Sam that he and Johnathan should get their head around the fact that we would struggle to do any better than what we've done," Parr said.

"The next time I have a formal meeting with Sam, which I expect to be in the next week or so, we will submit our final offer.

"Then it will be a case of Johnathan to give it due consideration with whatever else Sam has on the table for him from other codes.

"I'm trying to be fair and reasonable to Johnathan, but there's other players here to consider and we can't break the bank to sign him."

Parr remains confident Thurston will pledge his future to the Cowboys, but Ayoub revealed the multi-faceted grievances that could see the Kangaroos playmaker lost to the code.

At a meeting with NRL boss David Gallop a fortnight ago, the Cowboys captain outlined his concern over rugby league's pay structure and the number of matches being played by the game's elite.

Thurston's body has been battered recently, with the halfback having had a knee operation and shoulder reconstruction. There are fears injury will cut short his career.

The 26-year-old also questioned the earnings potential for the code's best players in comparison with elite Australian athletes in other sports such as cricket, rugby union and Australian rules football.

Ayoub said Thurston was increasingly mindful of his welfare and the fact he could earn nearly twice as much in rugby playing half as many games.

"It (the number of NRL games) is a consideration and it's something that has been conveyed to David Gallop," Ayoub said.

"JT has concerns about the wear and tear of the rugby league schedule on him. He is concerned about the toll and the amount of footy they play, it's not a whinge, it's just a fact.

"Johnathan doesn't want to end up in the 50 per cent disposables bin in a short space of time - he's trying to prolong his career," he said.

Parr believes the ace up the Cowboys' sleeve is the post-football opportunities they can offer.

"I know Johnathan enjoys representing the region and we talked a bit about the benefits of life after footy if he stayed in the game."

"If he sticks with the game and the Cowboys, there is certainly potential for him after football.

"I am more confident than ever that if Johnathan stays in the NRL, it will be at the Cowboys."

But Ayoub conceded the Cowboys' offer may not be enough to keep Thurston in rugby league.

If ever we were going to go after Thurston it has to be now (doesnt it?) or else he will be resigned before we even get to put an offer on the table (the same thing which I have seen Ricky do with all of our good juniors, he doesnt wait until last minute to resign players he resigns them heaps early so that other clubs dont have a chance)

For mine he would be worth in excess of the $500 the club is offering (but than there is also the 200 3rd party) but still with him at Cronulla we would seriously be premiership threats in the next 2 years.

I dont think we could top 700 k a season mate. Is he even worth it? For that amount of cash you could almost get 2 scott princes.

I do like the idea of having a side of jt, gallen, toops etc, but buying him will probably mean we will make him our captain, and if we did win a comp in the next couple of seasons, you can guaruntee we will be accused of buying our first premiership.

Nuh il be right. If we buy this character then we will have to sack heaps of our salary cap. Imagine winning a premiership with jt but without club favourites like Gallen, Covell and Williams?

Would it mean as much?

I reckon he'll go to jap Rugby. No-one in League can afford 1.1 Mil under the cap.

That's the value of 3 or 4 other very good players.

It's a pipe dream, let it go.

Thats one thing I wouldn't mind being accused of buying a premiership at least it would be a premiership. But I do agree JT too much money and comes with too mucg baggage. Keep investing in the future

nah thanks would rather the money be spent on tying up the young fellas coming through we may just have a Thurston on Prince in this lot coming through you can never be sure it would be a waste of money in my eyes.

After all he is only after the money and we are after premiership.

I agree that 700 is to much, IF though 500 was an option (which it wouldnt be unless he wanted to return to NSW) than I reckon he would be worth it.

But as stated mostly a pipe dream.

I just thought I would mention, as it would appear that now is the time to start making offers (is this even possible?, do some players have clauses in their contracts stating that they have to wait until mid year of their last contracted season to start negotiating with other clubs?)

Anyway , I hadnt seen it discussed so thought I would mention!

There used to be an NRL rule that contracted players could not negotiate with rival clubs prior to June 30.

This has since been dropped as it became evident that many sly negotiations were going on before this date anyhow. Furthermore, the new threat of Rugby has left the NRL with no recourse available should the player switch codes. So basically the deadline was effectively giving Rugby clubs an advantage in negotiations over rival NRL clubs.

Absolutely not. He would destroy all the good work our club has done to rebuild it's image and trust in the community.

Keep in mind, however, that signing Thurston would allow us to essentially dump Covell's contract when it expires and put some fresh legs on the wing with the goal kicking duties in Thurston's hands. With Barrett in what he believes is his final year, I don't think it's insane to explore the option. That said, the cap could be better used elsewhere. But would I be upset to see the Sharks explore the idea? Not at all...

I was going to say the same thing, I am not sure why the cows are so desperate to keep him, I mean, he hasnt exactly taken them to the finals or top four year in year out, if they blew that much of thier cap on them, they can forget about a dominant side.

For the record, I'm not saying I'm pro-Thurston by any means. I'm just saying I wouldn't kill the Sharks for investigating the situation. Also, I'd take Thurston's boot over Collis' any day :)

Disaterous Thoughts, he's only totally dominant behind a "monster pack" which with all due respect we don't have. One player will not be our saviour but as past teams of ours have shown a totally bonded, united team can get us there and with luck- one step further!
