With the new TV rights deals being auctioned off with games like the State of Origin separated from regular games, I would like to think that the income earned from the state of origin can go to paying the players (and maybe even compensating the clubs that are missing players to some extent).

I would like it to work as follows:

1 - State of Origin players earn money for playing state of origin, including money from the TV rights deal and money from sponsorship / marketing.

2 - The club is compensated for the player that is missing.

3 - The money the club receives in sponsorship can be used to pay players outside of the salary cap. Sort of like a bonus payment.

So let's say Gallen gets selected for Origin. Gallen gets 20k per game. The club gets 10k compo per game that Gallen misses due to Origin. A young NYC back rower plays his first NRL game to fill Gallen's shoes and gets paid 5k of that 10k as a bonus for helping out when our team is origin depleted.

Two thoughts:

1. Thurston is 100% right to do what is best for him and his family.

2. Thurston is 110% wrong to suggest that he owes nothing to rugby league.

Just one thought: Thurston is a grub who flies under the radar in Townsville. Sign him if you want to see our Club suffer more catastrophic damage.

Surely they wouldn't be that stupid, there's a reason they got rid of him!

Short memories maybe Iron, but I wouldn't put it past them they wont have Kimmorley and will need a 7 be interesting to see if they can find the money and who they would get rid of to get him also be interesting how long he can stay under the radar as others have said as I am aware he is protected and that comes from first hand info from up north.

Wonder how long their "Family Club" image will stay intact if he is allowed back in the Kennel?

to all the naysayers, if your career was of a short limited length, are you saying that you would knock back a chance to get more money??he is a sportsman, not a brain surgeon. I imagine that unless he has invested wisely, he will need a job in a few years after retirement..

I understand what your saying and if he wants the money then fantastic go for it but to invite him back with open hands if it doesn't work out for him then I don't think that's right it doesn't happen in the real world these guys need to accountable for their actions.

To call my ideas Dumb is fine but just remember your calling Ricky Stuarts ideas Dumb as well as he had the same views a week later when I first posted this after we lost Anderson but I don't think you were around then so you probably didn't see or read it.

Fitz posted the problem with marquee players I don't think it can work that's why we have a cap clubs don't have the money and finding sponsorship money can be hard as well look at what happened with the goons and gaz it could also make the game extremely lop sided.

I just don't think they should have the right to pick and choose not many employers will welcome you back after you leave them doesnt matter how good you are especially if you go to a rival company and I am talking from experience I only ever did that once.

I think something needs to be put in place to make these guys think long and hard and at the moment if it doesn't work out for them they are are aware that they can come back to the NRL and get a contract to me that's just unfair on our game the players and the supporters.

Yeah shouldnt have said dumb, I overstated my point. I meant I think it would be a mistake since I think the players will likely leave anyway and all you are doing is stopping them from returning. We lose a couple of stars every year but if we can have guys like Barrett, Tahu and Bird returning as well then it balances out. Also i did read that article by Sticky. Didnt read it in the telegraph but heard bout it on this formum that nite so then went to read it online. I don't really agree with him either for the reason I mentioned. I think any hardline stance wont prevent many leaving and will just stop them coming back, so it punishes the game.

I think that what has to be done is to try and keep the majority of major stars, so whether it be the marquee system (which has its own problems) or more likely, at the very least an increase in rep payments. Not massive as some are saying but an increase that will continue to increase. After that anyone who leaves can be replaced by the youngsters that always come through, but this cant be solely relied upon as the quality will lessen. Hence why we need the increased rep payments and also allowing players to come back as those small amount coming back will replace the very few top stars that have left.

Yet a lot of people say they wish guys like Tuqiri and Sonny Bill etc. would just admit they're chasing the bucks rather than rattling off bullsh!t about new challenges and whatnot.

Old case of 'the truth hurts', I guess.

Politicians sound like that as well unfortunately. That's why we have to have an over populated and ever increasingly polluted world.

Well after all the comments I still stand by my views.

I cant see how a marquee player system would work without it be rorted (speellin?) by certain clubs we are all aware that they would do it given the chance same with giving them the right to negotiate outside like some other sports people do people would get involved and rort it like the thoroughbreds we and many other clubs couldn't compete with that.

The money we get for the next rights deals should be used to 1 push the cap up and 2 to build a war chest to look after and further our game if the future.

Making the comment that if you were in their position wouldn't you do the same and we shouldn't begrudge them trying to earn an extra dollar.

Well at the moment they are taking advantage of the system so we probably all would but would we chance our financial future on a gamble most wont most people are very conservative when it comes to employment but these guys don't have to be as they can just come back to our game it it doesn't work out.

If you leave an employer to go to a rival company for more money but it doesn't work out do you get to go back to the guys you worked for before how likely is it that they will take you back and on the same money, not lily at all.

So lets look at Hayne case the western AFL had offered him 1 mill a season to join them does that hurt our game in anyway if you think it wouldn't seriously I would love to hear it and why things need to be out in place to stop this BS of pushing contracts up.

All I say is give them something to think about a rule of not letting them come straight back if things don't work out for them should be put in place lets make them think before they decide to leave it will also make it less attractive for Rugby clubs to do so as they will have to pay even more to that player in way of insurance.

Most of these guys wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for the our game and as its been already said these guys owe a lot to league.

Lockyer said a couple of years ago, players just cant keep taking without giving anything back.

If they want the money that's fine but its way too easy for them at the moment we don't have the money to compete with some of these rival codes its unfair on supporters the club and the code lets make them a little more accountable for the decisions they make.

That's why we have to have an over populated and ever increasingly polluted world.

Yes don't get me started on that Bungy:rant

He did say it would be a challenge and to play for Australia in Rugby that was reported after that he said the money line I think he farked up.

But wouldn't he need to play in an Australian Rugby team to play for Australia?

Very true words Hitman.

This has probably been said by someone in this thread before but Thurston would only be saying he is willing to go overseas to chase for money even tho he doesnt intend to because he just wants an NRL club to offer him as much as he can.

He apparently loves rep footy and he wont want to give it up.

BIG GORDIE WARNS JT

QUEENSLAND great Gorden Tallis has warned Johnathan Thurston about the perils of switching to rugby, citing the careers of Lote Tuqiri and Wendell Sailor as examples of what can go wrong. ''Look at how they treated Wendell and then Lote - like pieces of meat,'' he fumed. ''These guys were their stars and they cut them off as quick as anything when they had drama. They were used up by the sport and tossed out.'' If Thurston wants to escape the limelight - Tallis says rugby is his sport. ''The Toyota Cup, league's under-20 comp, out-rates big-time rugby,'' he said. ''If you want to play in the fourth-ranked football code then he should do that.'' Tallis says Thurston will be remembered as a Queensland great if he stays put. ''Johnathan can be a leader of the Queensland side for the next six or seven years and when he retires he'll get the benefits of that,'' he said. ''If he opens up a car yard or McDonald's or whatever in Queensland people will come and support him. If he goes to rugby all of that can be jeopardised.'' Thurston meets David Gallop tomorrow to see how the NRL can help keep him in the code. Be sure that Thurston's manager, Sam Ayoub, will get a top deal.
