surely everyone would have thought the same thing (about us being over the cap)

glad that he is reporting the facts; thats IF it is a fact ... wondering which figure he was working off but. a flat 5 mil or 5.8.

Facts rarely make an appearance in Rothfield's articles.

that is what i thought phil may have meant, but surely the roosters would be in the same situation and i still think it is an irresponible thing for a
supposed sharks fan to write. i think this may drag out for a while as i do not think either us or the roosters can make his signing offical until the salary cap
rise is made official
Rothfield is a douche bag. Going to be interesting to see what **** is printed in the telecrap

As good as Jennings is, is he really worth 650,000? I think its safe to say whereever he ends up, Penrith wont be putting a cent into his contract. 650000 is a big deal. We've seen teams lately splash on 1 or 2 players, who pretty often, play like **** anyway. Jennings has had moments of brilliance for sure, but every game? nup. same with Hopper, Sandow, even SBW? Worth it? no. but still players you would wanna sign (except maybe Sandow)

As the salary cap continues to rise $650k for players like Jennings will be the norm. I'd pay that for him. He's a match winner. You either want to win or you don't.

Couldn't have said it better, when people re talking about $1m for halfbacks, 5/8s and Fullbacks, 650k will be the going price for a representative centre!

So with a 6 mill dollar cap you would be fine spending around 2 million on 4 players?(Gallen, Lewis, Carney and Jennings). Don't forget we have to try and work in the contracts of Graham, Gordon, Fifita and co. We may have room but I doubt we have the 400k+ in space kicking about for Jennings as awesome as he would be.

Also there has been some talk of squads going from 25 to 30 so you'd have to factor in the new minimums for 5 more players. There is a reason it is taking so long to set the cap

Yep and that reason would be that clubs have already committed to players salaries as far back as 4 years ago for next year. The NRL has to be very careful about the figure they set as they may be placing clubs into cap trouble if clubs have budgeted for one figure but are being given something different. Dangerous waters.

Hopefully the rumour got the Roosters so worried that they spent some more of their salary cap to seal the deal

Also do not forget we barely have any 3 party deals for our players. Clubs like the Knights can offer Snowden say 400k but only put 300k in the cap and 100k in outside payments. This will be how the roosters fit the 650k into their cap... Probably 250k of cap room(from BJ/Mose going), 200k from the Panthers and 200k from 3rd party or some kind of split like that. Same with Thurston getting a million - that won't be in the Cows salary cap that will be made up of cap and 3rd party payments which is something from my understanding that we don't have.

How many salary cap loop holes do you guys think we have? Gallen 10 years, Beau channel 9... Lewis maybe a 3d party deal? Who else? This is why Gus has fired everyone at the Panthers as they did not have any 3rd party deals and were paying players the full amount. This is not a shot at our club or anyone btw it is just a fact that we have to deal with as a smaller club compared to the Broncs, Knights etc
