Huge Part of our Problem

I was just doing some soul searching myself, to see what I could come up with regarding my beloved Sharks, who frankly I am livid with. But amongst all this I have realised a big part of our problems, is our forwards.

Now I know we always say of late, we need some speed in the backs etc, and I totally agree, but we are hugely lacking go forward.

Now I just went onto the Stats section on NRL.com, and did a quick 5 min researching, so don't shoot me down too much, but I basically compared our forwards stats to Asotasi, Price, Petro etc, as I know these to me are the best front rowers in our game today, all of which AVERAGE over 120m per game, just a quick look at Poore, in his 3 games was 155,120 odd and 90m, and Dougie & Gal are our best with mid 90's each. Last year we were so much more dominant with Peek, Nutley, Snowden and Dougie, now there could be a few reasons for this, which I think all are valid, one is poor, slow service from our hooker, which I believe is a huge part of it, and the other is our forwards just aren't bending the line like last year, in Dougie defence, he has only average high 50's in the mins department all year, which I think is a reflection of Ricky not wanting to burn the kid out, giving the pace of this years game, plus previous 3 season pretty much not missing a game and playing minimum 75 mins a game.

Plus the fact the play the ball speed is so much faster, it gives other teams time to get up off their line to bash us too.

So as much as we like to say we need a great outside back, which we do, we also need another HIGH QUALITY front rower too, so going for a Dave Taylor or a Justin Poore is something we do need, I am not necessarily saying these 2, but with the shortage of quality, they have to be considered. In saying that, I believe both are long shots at getting from either club, neither want to leave where they are ideally, hence we would have to pay big overs for them. Especially when Souths are looking at throwing 700k at Taylor?

I think we need 5 quality players for next year, 2 Props, Second Rower, and 2 outside backs, then the rest to be made up of yougsters, all this bearing in mind 13 of our players are up end of the season.

Aside from that, I also think Ricky should re-think his staffing, get some new ideas on board, and conditioners, I mean Bennett did it 3 yrs ago and won the comp that year. As do players, coaching staff get comfortable too.

i agree, but i think our 'play the ball speeds' along with errors are our biggest problem.

I totally agree.

I think this is a major problem for us. We are allowing the opposition far too long to get back on side to set their defence. We should be running at them while they are still back peddling. This would help us to gain metres and penalties. This is proabably part of the reason why we aren't scoring tries as well.

It seems to me that our players look a little out of condition, unfit atm so we may need a fresh approach to our fitness coaching.

The stats just indicate that our forwards don't have the ball as often - because we drop it. We have had good go-forward in every game except yesterday but when you drop it half the time your big men don't get as many touches - hence they don't make as much yardage.

Great White do you think that if we still had Ross things would be a little different with our go forward? I know it may be a little hard to judge, but just out of curiosity.

Forwards

This does sound fairly radical but I think you have a valid point. Every team has strengths and they should always try to play to them.

Our greatest strength is our abundance of forwards. We have the slowest backline in history and yet on the weekend we tended to throw the cut out pass and let our "speedy" wingers try to score. Who are we kidding???

Our forwards should be creating a roll-on effect right through the middle and quick guys(if there are any) like Brown and Wright should be trailing Toupou as he always offloads.

I too agree that our dummy half is part of the problem. Quick play the balls and our forwards working together would go a long way to us turning this season around. Ball control is also a very big issue that needs addressing.

Well said GW, outstanding work, but we urgently require a quality hooker. I don't think there are any coming off contract though.

Tony Caine is young and could adapt to a faster game easier than Hughes, without us having to sacrifice our defence by selecting Seu Seu. I suggest we trial out Tony and see how that goes, with Hughes on the bench.

i must admit when we go through the hands and spread the ball wide...
im much more aprehenssive that we will drop it then i am filled with excitement to see us throw the ball around most of the time the wingers and centres are standing there with no momentum and are easy pickings for the defensive team.......
