Henry switches focus to Barca
ONE of the world's best strikers, French star Thierry Henry, yesterday told of his sadness at quitting Arsenal for Barcelona.
Henry is to sign a four-year contract with Barcelona for a transfer fee of €24 million($38 million).
Henry said instability at the English Premier League club was behind his decision.
"Arsene Wenger has said that at this moment he will not commit to the club past the expiration of his current deal, which finishes at the end of this coming season," Henry told The Sun newspaper.
"I respect his decision and honesty but I will be 31 at the end of next season and I cannot take the chance to be there without Arsene Wenger and [former director] David Dein.
"It is with great sadness that I am saying goodbye to the club I genuinely love. I have spent eight fantastic seasons at Arsenal and I have enjoyed every minute of my time there."
Sources at Primera Liga club Barcelona said all that remained was for lawyers to scrutinise the details. They indicated the signing was likely to be made official overnight (Sydney time).
Henry, who turns 30 in August, is expected to have a medical tomorrow before a press conference.
Barcelona were denied a third straight title on the last day of the season on Sunday, losing to arch rivals Real Madrid on head-to-head results. A great deal of soul-searching has gone on since then after a season with no silverware, and the club has moved quickly to strengthen its squad to appease the fans.
Henry was the focal point at Arsenal and their top scorer in four of the five Premier League seasons between 2001-06, though he spent much of the past campaign sidelined with injury. He rejected a move to Barca and signed a four-year contract with Arsenal after they lost to Frank Rijkaard's team in the 2006 Champions League final.
The former Monaco and Juventus player's change of mind will be a major blow to the north London club.
At Barca, Henry faces the prospect of having to find a place in one of the most feared forward lines in European football, which includes Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, Brazil playmaker Ronaldinho and Argentine winger Lionel Messi. One of Barca's problems last term was that neither Iceland's Eidur Gudjohnsen nor Argentine Javier Saviola provided adequate cover up front when Eto'o suffered a knee ligament injury.
Saviola has already announced his decision to leave the club and Gudjohnsen is expected to follow.
Barcelona are also expected to strengthen their defence in the close season with AS Roma centre back Cristian Chivu their top target.
Henry's move could prompt Real Madrid into action.
Real president Ramon Calderon wants to pry Brazil's Kaka from Champions League winner AC Milan. The club has already released David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy) and Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos.
Calderon indicated on Friday that there could be other sweeping changes at the Bernabeu from coach Fabio Capello down.
If Capello doesn't stay, Calderon said Madrid could go for Wenger, PSV Eindhoven's Ronald Koeman or former Denmark regular Michael Laudrup as a replacement.
That would mean big changes to the playing personnel.
Although Henry's move is another body blow for Arsenal, the Gunners would have £16 million ($38 million) to spend to replace the Frenchman. But the Gunners have a reputation of not spending big, instead relying on young, home-grown players.
Wenger has a team of emerging prospects who are the envy of his Premiership rivals.
