Ferguson fumes at Lille antics
manutd.com
Sir Alex Ferguson barely looked like the winning boss on Tuesday night - such was his anger at the actions of the Lille players and staff.
The French team threatened to walk off the pitch in protest at Ryan Giggs' winning goal, apparently because the referee hadn't blown his whistle before the free-kick was taken.
Speaking just moments after the final whistle, Sir Alex told ITV Sport: "I think UEFA have got to take some action, I've never in my life seen anything like that. It'll maybe take an hour to digest it exactly, but I can't understand it.
"It's a disgrace, what we've seen tonight. That's not football.
"The Lille staff encouraged their players to come off the pitch. It's intimidation of the referee and it's made for a hostile atmosphere inside the ground. I think it's a disgrace.
"UEFA will come down strongly, they'll have to because you can't tolerate that. I was worried because there were missiles being thrown from the stands as you saw. I think Gary Neville was hit by something and they were throwing stuff at our staff."
Sir Alex was angry with some of his own players as the Lille team tried to walk off.
"I wanted to keep our players on the pitch and away from it all," explained the United boss.
"It wasn't our concern. It was for the referee and the fourth official to decide what to do. I wanted our players to stay on the pitch but instead they started milling around with their players. We don't want that."
