according to todays sunday telegraph is close to signing huge offer to play in english super league if this happens i think he would be a big loss, he was one of best last year, and even with his injuries problems i think he should be a priority to resign.

Let there be no doubt about if the Cronulla Sharks was a local government council, and not an NRL club, it would by now have been dismissed by the Minister for Local Government and replaced by an appointed administrator.

As the Board and Management of the Sharks lurch from one crisis to another, the NRL, and especially the CEO of the NRL, continue to extend to the Sharks Board extraordinary tolerance.

Suggestions that the NRL appoint an administrator have been dismissed out of hand by David Gallop.

Even the latest appalling revelation – about which not too much can be said because of a court appearance today – has been met with a wholly inadequate response from the game’s CEO. The description of the latest revelations as a “shermozzle” is surely one of understatements of the year.

For the last nine months the Sharks administration has been embarrassing itself and the game. It has consistently let down its fans, sponsors, and, it needs to be said the great majority of its playing and coaching staff.

Sure Greg Bird brought the game into disrepute – but the handling of issues surrounding him by the then Sharks CEO and the Board made matters worse.

While there have been other incidents involving players, in recent times it has been the board and management that have been doing the damage.

And the damage gets worse. The latest revelations – quite apart from those surrounding the alleged terminally ill Sharks “fan” – really show up the Sharks Board as being hopeless in the extreme.

This is the same board that has led the club to the brink of financial ruin. But it is also the same board that David Gallop continues to defend!

The former CEO of the Sharks who is again in the headlines for all the wrong reasons is the same person who just a week ago David Gallop said might return to rugby league administration! Is that still his view?

Notwithstanding the bad behaviour by a small number of Sharks players, the people I now believe are being really let down are the coach, Ricky Stuart, and his team.

How can they possibly have faith in a board and management that has demonstrated total ineptitude? They deserve credit for turning around a dreadful start to the season – and even more credit for having done so while those who should be supporting them have been letting them down.

But the question must now be asked – is the NRL letting them down, and the sponsors and fans down, as well?

The tolerance the NRL has extended to the Sharks board and management has been “repaid” by more evidence of a club administration that reeks of total incompetence.

The time for tolerance and excuses is over. The NRL has a duty to the game to sack the Sharks Board and replace it with an independent administrator.

The longer the NRL does nothing, the worse the position at the Sharks gets, and the weaker the NRL itself looks!

Sharks' practices put under scrutiny

Jacquelin Magnay
June 19, 2009

Cronulla board members have moved quickly to address the club's business practices following the embarrassing debacle around the disgraced chief executive Tony Zappia and the secret Beyond Sharks Foundation.

And directors are interviewing candidates for Zappia's position, left vacant when he resigned last week in the wake of his handling of the black eye suffered by former staffer Jenny Hall. An appointment is expected to be made next week.

The Melbourne firm BDO Kendalls has been hired to review all aspects of the club's management and accounting procedures and oversee its corporate governance.

In a statement, the board said the firm would specifically look at any unusual transactions identified in a review of contractual agreements and other financial transactions, and verify any expenditure by the foundation for the benefit of the Sharks. This is believed to include the late payment of fundraising monies for Guide Dogs NSW and any under-the-table agreements that may not have been registered.

"We are checking and cross-checking what we have been told with the records that we may have - we are not just taking anyone's word," a board member said yesterday. It is understood board members have also asked their legal counsel to review the transactions and the legal status of the foundation.

The Sharks also have another investigation being conducted by a private investigator into aspects of the Zappia controversy in relation to the poor treatment of women. The investigator gave a preliminary report prior to Zappia's resignation but is still seeking more information.

Meanwhile, the club's former auditor, Miranda accountant Craig Douglas, has been appointed to the board to replace former director Don Anderson.

The Sharks board will call a general meeting towards the end of July to ask for a motion of confidence by members.

Critically, the club's carpark redevelopment has been stalled by a couple of months after calls from the Sutherland Shire Council to realign the residential towers. The development is expected to be debated before the council in August.

Old boys like Barry Pierce ruining the game
By Josh Massoud

AT NOON on Wednesday, NRL chief executive David Gallop made a curious demand of all 16 clubs. On behalf of his board, Gallop declared a full audit of "corporate governance protocols" in the wake of the farcical state of affairs at Cronulla.

And he reportedly did so with a straight face.

Gallop's decree was the result of an NRL board meeting earlier in the day. The six NRL directors felt Cronulla's woes warranted an inquest into the standard of governance, a blunt inference that administrative practices aren't up to scratch in clubland.

One of the directors is a likeable chap named Barry Pierce. Yes, that's him. The same Barry Pierce who is Cronulla Sharks chairman. The big fellow with the white hair you had never seen until a few weeks ago, when he started bobbing up on TV, usually vaulting the front stairs of Sharkies Leagues Club to escape reporters.

But less than 24 hours before the meeting, Pierce broke routine and made an unscripted cameo on Channel 7's Tuesday night news. The set was Rydges Hotel Cronulla, where the network arranged for Pierce to meet with a chap named Clint Elford. Yes, that's him. The same Clint Elford who donated the Sharks $30,000. The big fellow with the blue hair you'd never heard of until a few days ago, when he was revealed as a terminally-ill Cronulla fan whose dying wish was to bequeath the club his entire $13.8 million estate.

Angry that former CEO Tony Zappia had kept Elford a secret for so long, Pierce was keen to meet him. And Elford didn't disappoint. After the meeting, Pierce gushed on camera about how fortunate Cronulla were to be touched by such a benevolent soul.

And then he walked down the hotel steps just in time to witness Elford being arrested. The cameras captured Pierce in the background as Elford was taken into custody, the chairman's jaw hanging slacker than Cronulla's finals hopes.

Club officials were entitled to react the same way when they received Gallop's order on Wednesday. Because it simply beggars belief that the NRL board - the high priests of rugby league in Australia - includes Pierce. The same Pierce who has been Sharks chairman for 11 years while the club frittered away its Super League war chest to be now $12 million in debt. The same Pierce who accompanied the team to Christchurch in 2002, then claimed to know nothing of any group sex until police called. The same Pierce who met alleged fraudster Clint Elford face-to-face on Tuesday and thought the bloke was the best thing for the Shire since Miranda Westfield.

While the NRL board promotes such stunning ignorance, how can it seriously make demands of the clubs to bring their corporate governance into the 21st century?

Change starts at the top. As long as outdated administrators like Pierce occupy the highest branches, the whole tree threatens to rot. He might be stepping down at Cronulla next week, but there has been no word as to whether he will hang up his NRL blazer.

Everyone has their time. Tuesday night's on-camera debacle proved that Pierce's expired a long time ago. He is not alone. Forget the sex scandals, the booze and the brawls. The geriatrification of rugby league administration is its biggest challenge.

Introducing Ms Denise Aldous And Ms Jenny Reynolds To The Board

In a continuation of the efforts of the Sharks Board of Directors to take the club in a new and positive direction, they announce the appointment of two highly-credentialed women to the Board of Directors

http://sharks.com.au/?s=article-display&id=18805

Press Release
July 29, 2009

In a continuation of the efforts of the Sharks Board of Directors to take the club in a new and positive direction, they announce the appointment of two highly-credentialed women to the Board of Directors.

Sharks Chairman Damian Irvine confirmed today that Ms Denise Aldous and Ms Jenny Reynolds had accepted invitations to join the Sharks board, breaking new ground for an NRL club.

The pair will fill the vacancies left by departing Chairman Barry Pierce, who recently stepped down from his post, and long-time Director and Sharks life member Graham Gillard.

“Since the May 28 AGM it has been very clear to the board that the atmosphere of change at our club must continue,” Mr Irvine said. “In appointing Denise Aldous and Jenny Reynolds onto the board, we arrive at the culmination of a process that has taken eight weeks to complete.

“Our Club has been very genuine in our efforts to modernise and re-structure our board. There is still much to do as our club takes confident steps towards re-building and re-establishing itself as a leader in the industry and in the Australian Sporting landscape.

“We are excited and proud to welcome Denise and Jenny to the club,” Irvine said.

Ms Reynolds brings to the Sharks over 27 years of commercial and financial know-how in the international banking industry, with Ms Aldous a similarly experienced business leader with particular expertise in financial services, consulting services and international private sector development.

Currently Ms Reynolds is an executive with the ANZ Bank within the Payments and Cash Management business, while Ms Aldous, a former CEO of both large and small businesses, has a background in financial and professional services, international consulting and retail and is presently involved with company directorships and her own consultancy business.

Wow. Where did that come from! Damien must have had this up his sleave when Tynan took her bat and ball. They sound like they are well credentialed individuals.

The fact that they are women, will give the media the story that they have been so desperately craving. They love to cut things down and then build them up again. Hopefully we can now have some happy stories and we can all feel warm and fuzzy.

I can see it now “Cronulla Sharks attempt to re-engage their female fans” including photos of the smiling new directors with our clean skin players.

She should be stoked that there's now TWO female members on the board. Isn't that the direction she wanted her beloved club to do :)

I don't know how much she cared about females being on there, it was more about her being on there, not females.

I reckon Madeline Tynan will be involved at some stage down the line. She obviously didn't get her terms or Damian Irvine his when they met recently so now wasn't the right time. But if she is the type of person Great White said she is, she won't stop until she is on that board and if that is when elections are next held then she'll wait until then. I don't think she cared if there were females on there or not.

worst choice irvine will damage the club with this not a smart move at all. Just the same as hiring the new c.e.o too quick to make such a bad selfish decision on irvine's part. Sharks cannot afford peole like him making decisions. WE need a full elecetion right now. NOw the board is clogged once again.

:birdno

cant wait to see if mrs dragon responds to this

love this move by the D-Man, waiting with anticipation to see what they have to offer for the club for the future

peach honestly think before you speak. YOU need a good lesson or two. HOw many times has it been said that it doesnt matter if Tynans sponsors both clubs.

HOw bout you have a go at Toyota for sponsoring the cowboys and sharks or hogs breath cafe who sponsor the broncos honestly pull your head in.
